TRAINING WEDNESDAY 9th AUGUST ;-
A nice sunny day for training today but a very strong cool breeze kept the temperature down from 14.8 to feeling like 8.9deg.
Training got underway at 9.20am. Ther was no sign of Nick Daicos of course. Surprisingly Nathan Murphy did the full session and looked as fit as ever. Unbelievable!!! He has certainly dodged a bullet. It remains to be seen whether they play him or not. It all depends on how he pulls up. And apparently Steele Sidebottom is in doubt for Friday’s game due to a foot or ankle problem. Fin Macrae trained but was wearing a protective glove for his broken thumb. Another week on the sidelines for Fin I would think although he didn’t seem to be hampered by it much. And Will Kelly trained ok after being pulled from the starting lineup for the VFL game with an ankle problem. Charlie Dean was the only one in rehab and was doing a lot of running as usual.
Training started with some kick to kick in one group while on the other side of the ground another group was practising the quick handball in a tight area. Following that the group nearest me were doing my favourite drill to watch. i.e. quick handball and tackling in the 30m x 10m area with one team attempting to get from one end to the other in a really tight area while the other group attempted to stop them with solid tackling. Great to watch. One thing that was noticeable in the whole session was the level of intensity and enthusiasm from the players had increased markedly from previous weeks. And they were urged on by Justin Leppitsch that they could still do better. There was a practice match involving the majority of players played across the ground from wing to wing with the boundary markers on the 50m lines. There was a lot of good contested footy from all players but the strong wind was playing havoc with a lot of the kicks and also made marking difficult judging the higher kicks. But once again the enthusiasm had lifted. The session was pretty well wrapped up by a bit after 11am with just a few small groups practising some plans and Mason Cox and Darcy Cameron practising some ruck work in the middle of the ground. Cox also joined in the goal kicking practice before leaving the ground.
INS and OUTS?? I would not have a clue. Regular team players were mixed up with both black and white jumpers so there was really nothing to go on there. Billy Frampton was in the black top which makes me think he might come in even if Murphy does play. We will need him especially if Hawkins plays for the Cats. I don’t think Cox will play after a 5 day break but I think he will certainly be given consideration by the selectors. I hope he plays so Frampton can just play full back which is why we recruited him. And Ginnivan was rested quite a bit in the game against Werribee so he could be a possibility to replace Sidebottom.
So after a couple of pretty ordinary games in the last 2 weeks, let’s hope the boys can come out fired up against Geelong and get back on the winners list. GO PIES.

Cox has to play. I listened to Eddie and Bartel yesterday and like me Eddie thought dropping Cox was a big mistake and one we should not repeat again this season.

Just watched flys presser, he does say the two rucks has worked for us for 18 months, just a matter how they want the rucks to work. If it ruck from the middle, forward, back half. Its something they'll weigh up.

It sounded like there was a fair few missing today Jen?

Players being managed mid-week, illness or?

Cox had 2 really poor games in a row so his omission was justified.

I get the vibe that Fly wants him in his best 22 but Coxy has to back it up by playing well.

Sunny morning for training.
Once I arrived, on the scoreboard there was one word.

DNA day.

With a clear focus on getting back to our DNA, what makes this team good, which is something we have gone away from in recent weeks. so it was time to get back to training the basics and the things that we are renowed for.

Kelly came out initially with the boys, did a few warm up drills; but he must have went back inside as I didn't see him again.
Dean did some of the drills with the boys, then went to the rehab group as he completed a few running sessions

  • Lippa
  • JDG
  • IQ
  • Maynard
  • Elliott
  • Mitchell
  • JDaicos
  • Noble
  • Pendles
  • Mcstay
  • Adams
  • DC
  • Frampton
  • Hill
  • Crisp
  • Moore
  • Beau
  • Markov
  • Howe
  • Mihocek

(Add Murphy, WHE + Ginni, and thats your 23, I reckon)

Whites;

  • Bianco
  • Wilson
  • Kreuger
  • Allan
  • Macrae
  • Draper
  • Ruscoe
  • Ryan
  • Reef
  • Murley
  • Murphy
  • Richards
  • WHE
  • Ginni
  • HH
  • Begg
  • Johnson
  • Steene
  • Carmichael
  • Cox

There was a real energy and intent about the session. They worked on a lot. Contest 1 v 1 work, fight and pressure drills. Ground balls. Then they got into some match play.
This "cross ground" match play was split into three teams. The blacks, whites and yellow vests.
It was whites v vests first, then black v white and black v vests. Given it's done in a smaller space where the golal posts are vertically rather than horizontal like the proper goal posts are.
The play then gets played within specific boundaries, whats located in the middle of the ground, with smaller space than what you'd use for a general ground.

Cox was on the white team that either went up against DC or Steene.
Frampton was down back in the black. Howe I think was also down back, but may have been in the vests team. I didn't recall seeing them together.
Murphy was in the white, but thats never unusual.

Lippa was in the midfield group, lined up there. Even on the wing v wilson.
Crisp was also in the midfield group, so reckon we'll see him playing a lot more there now that Nick is out. And which prob lets Markov go half back in his place.

I think we'll also see Adams spend a lot more time in the centre bounce. The main culprits doing centre bounce work was Pendles, Adams, Mitchell, JDG
Then we'll then see crisp coming into that rotation, and lippa too I reckon.

There was one point in one of the pressure drills where Leppa tore through the group and went off, saying "He just walked heckin'g through and nobody touched -this is not heckin'g fight" and told them to give him some bloody intensity.

I think we'll see a different side come Friday.

Sorry to be that guy Jen but that is 2 words! Seriously though , thanks for keeping the info flowing

I'm go to be that guy too. I'd argue that DNA Day is either 1 word or 3 words, depending on whether you expand DNA to its 2 words or consider it to be an abbreviation and not a word.

I do like the humble and measured way that Jen responds to nitpickers great and small on here. We have a forum where so many take exaggerated offense at the smallest disagreement, and perish the thought that anyone's English be corrected. Jen, however, sails through it all, playing a straight bat. I recall a time not too long ago when she had to withstand a social media assault and did that well too. An absolute treasure for the club and us.

My guess is that Frampton is returning to play a role on Stewart. If that goes to s**t, which I assume it will, then Howe will go forward.
Wouldn't it make more sense to put Frampton down back on Neale, freeing up Moore to be an interceptor? That way Howe can go to Henry, Murphy to Cameron and then our smaller defenders to the smaller forwards. Seems to me we've been missing out on Moore's rebound and dash in the last 2-3 weeks.

Freeing Moore up has hurt his game more than helped. The main games to look at are v WC and Melbourne we’re he got lost without a dangerous opponent and if Murphy or Frampton’s man can engage him all hell breaks loose at ground level. It would be a big gamble late in the season given how it’s previously worked and the danger at ground level from Geelong…

The games against Brisbane and Richmond earlier this year saw this happen as well.

Teams just won’t let us ‘free up Moore’. He’s basically too good for them to let it happen.
