  • Rioli attempts a block
  • Rioli misses but his trailing hand possibly makes contact with Ridley's head, difficult to tell as Ridley doesn't initially react
  • Ridley then throws his hands up in the air, perhaps attempting to draw the attention of an umpire to pay a free kick
  • Ridley falls and, for some reason, fails to put his hands out to protect himself enough to prevent his head from hitting the turf

He landed fine though.

I've seen a few people suggest that Ridley falling late is because he was faking it or something and then he caused himself to get concussed in doing so, and I think that's pretty ridiculous. It clearly seems to me to be an ever so slightly delayed reaction to a head knock, it's pretty scary how concussion can do those sorts of things and then you're in a heap.

That all being said I have no idea how you can look at that footage and deem it any worse than careless - there's no way Rioli went out of his way to run backwards towards another player and purposefully clock him with a backwards elbow. There's more malicious shit that gets off every week.

He'll end up with 3 weeks though, bank it

I think if it was a Joel Selwood or a Luke Schuey it wouldn't be an unreasonable take and quite plausible. Ridley has no history for doing that kind of crap though which is why I'd take it at face value.

If it was just a delayed fall I’d give him the benefit of the doubt but the way he throws his arms up in the air is just plain weird. I can’t see it as anything other than him trying to exaggerate the contact.

I don't think he's taken a dive at all, I just think he's found himself concussed from incidental contact from a trailing arm after Rioli bounced off Finlayson. He wasn't knocked out. A slightly delayed reaction happens in every single head knock unless they're out cold, which he wasn't.

There needs to be some clear direction from the AFL as to what actually constitutes low, medium, high and severe impact.

It’s just a subjective mess at the moment with no actual guidelines for the MRO to stick to when making a decision.

The Rioli outcome resulted in a concussion yes but severe impact?, no IMO.

Surely severe impact should come with the caveat that a player couldn’t remove the self from the field of play, aka, they are stretchered off or required significant assistance.

High impact, the play can walk off with some assistance.

Medium, the player can remove the self from the field without assistance.

Low impact, continues playing.

Just can’t see how this is considered severe impact just because there’s a concussion even though the actual impact was minor.

Concussion can be caused from even minor impacts as seen here.

For the AFL lawyer to say it’s lucky nothing more serious occurred, that is literally every contest in an afl game. How can they objectively look at this and think it’s a severe level of impact? I still think this is the softest impact to cause a concussion I have ever witnessed.

I thought the exact same thing. How is this not being called out?

This reads like a train wreck.

Oh well, Frankie Evans will get 3 games to show what he can do.

I see the AFL lawyer has quoted the Van lo incident from yesterday

I thought precedent wasn't allowed

I think they've both done that and both mangled his name.

From memory, this isn't the first time Ehrlich has butchered a player defence for us, is it?

I'm imagining this guy...

Yes...

Ehrlich (Port) almost calls Gleeson "Your Honour."

Ehrlich: You'll remember the Dow Jones defamation proceedings, a certain English silk kept calling certain Irish judges 'My Lord'. He took great offence to being called a Lord in Melbourne. Anyway, leave that to one side.
