Opinion Troy Menzel - Where is he at?

Undecided about Menzel. Dropping him might break his confidence altogether, which has been fragile because he's in and out of the side.
Giving him a run of games to back him in might be team-damaging if he does not improve. Tough call.

If they can justify giving Wright 12 odd games despite little impact, they should he able to do it with Menzel to find out if he actually has a future at the club or not.

We need to single out his performance tonight as disgraceful, unacceptable and demand improvement from him whilst declaring he will play at least the next month of football in the SANFL.

This should divert enough attention away publicly from the fact that Dave Mackay will still maintain his spot in the starting 18

Mackay doesn't have a spot in the starting 18. He's named on the field every week but starts on the bench nearly every game.

Troy is an introvert and does struggle with the mental side of the ups and downs of football.
and you know this how? It's a pet peeve of mine when someone makes such statements with nothing to base it on.

It's just clutching at straws to justify his poor form.

Like most Adelaide is a small town when it comes to footballers. I have previously quoted things to occur in regards to Both Menzels. I am comfortable that my statement is correct. You are also correct in choosing whether to ignore it or accept it

Pardon for the intrusion but Menzel when at Carlton was seen as a player with immense talent but does not have a tank or works hard enough for a forward pocket/flanker.At times he looks laconic but that's just the way he is.I think he needs 4 or 5 games in a row to build his confidence.Hope you guys get out of your little rut and play off in a GF,would love to see Eddie with a premiership medal.Best small forward to ever play the game.Good luck for the rest of the year.

I agree that we should give him 4 or 5 games in a row to build up his confidence. The problem is that we are carrying quite a few guys like Menzel. We are also carrying developing players like Milera, Knight, Hampton and Kelly at the moment. All have shown more than Menzel up until this point. The truth is that we dont have a very deep squad. Outside the 24 players that got smashed in the last 2 weeks, we have only McGovern that is a definite best 22.

At the moment, our BF fan base wants heads to roll, and I can understand the sentiment. But the reality is that we dont have the cattle. Our problem lies in our midfields ability to win a hard ball. You can watch pretty much any random 5 minutes of play from the last 2 games or last years losses to Sydney, WCE or Geelong. You would see time after time, a 50-50 ball and our players wont be able to win it. If they do, they wont be able to get it out to advantage. I dont see this as being a problem with Menzel, so he is the least of our troubles. What I like about Menzel is that he gives defensive pressure and tackling. I think that type of role is a little bit taboo at AFC because we have had to put up with guys like Petrenko in the past. And I agree that if that is all Menzel is providing then its not enough. But I am more than happy to give him an extended run which gives him an opportunity to get his confidence and live up to his talent, as long as he provides that pressure.

I have feeling a fair few people will be eating humble pie when menzel starts showing what he can do. I have no doubt he'll turn into a very good player for us. Maybe if they gave him a good 3-4 weeks instead of dropping him after one he might be able to build confidence. I mean we play McKay all year and he only plays 3 or 4 good games a season. They should at least give menzel a month to see what he's got.

I think if we send him back to the twos now, that's it, you may as well put him on the delist pile. Now some will say, yep, that's where he belongs. But if the jury's still out (which it is IMO), let's give him a secure run of games and find out for sure. We've had a bad habit of keeping players on our list for too long without ever really giving them a proper run and deciding whether they've got it or not.

What's infuriating in particular is you know it's highly likely Menzel will be dropped at any time despite needing to be backed in, but an absolute shitlord like Mackay gets a billion chances without even a hint if being dropped

Can't rely on mentally fragile players to get us wins in finals or even in pressure games.

Thinking more about Menzel ...
I remember when we got Kane Johnson, who took most of '96 to bloom, and I remember being frustrated by his errors and decision-making. He was a valuable member of the '97 Flag side, especially his willingness to play on quickly, probably learned from Blighty. I'll never forget the mark he took in the last quarter of 97 GF, wheeled around to his left and hit Jarman on the lead, knowing he'd be there. Magic! He eventually captained Richmond 2005-2008.
OK, Menzel has had more time to develop, so Pykey will either persevere because he believes he will become a really good player, or play him in the SANFL until they trade or delist him. We'll have to wait and see, as with most of the speculation in here.
Every club has a few players like this ie too good for the AFL/VFL/WAFL but don't lift to their potential in the AFL. It applies to cricket as well --- too good for Shield cricket, but not good enough to play in the Test side consistently.
Maybe Menzel's problem is self-belief? That's a tricky frame of mind to overcome.

If you average such a low possession count per game you need to make your touches count

Unfortunately he didn't do that despite giving max effort

What concerns me is his effort was max but he was still no good overall and he has problems with consistent effort
I put a lot of that down to feeling like he has to play like Toby Greene to not get dropped.

like you say, every touch has to count and he's surely feeling that pressure too. He can obviously kick goals from 30m out directly in front, he can obviously hit 20m passes, he just didn't manage it on the weekend.

was one of only two or three flying the flag for effort though, I'll be seriously disappointed if he gets dropped ahead of at least 5 others.

We just need to back him in.
Show him confidence and he will reward us.
If we keep dropping him, he knows he's a bad game off being dropped.
When gov got injured he needed 5-10 games straight and communicated this, "this is your chance"
We have failed him so far.

I'm inclined to agree.

Should have given him 10 games in a row. At the end we'd have a much better idea of where he was at.

As it is now I think we really haven't learned anything. He's still just 'potential' with a big question mark.

how would menzel look in laird's position on hbf, against melbourne he got smashed in a marking contest got up real sore and then few seconds on laid really hard tackle, can't call him soft, could get into the game more, plus benefit of laird in middle?? or taking kelly's spot, with kelly going in the middle to tag the crap out of oppositions best mid especially with opposition tagging sloane......
