On the whole cameras discussion.

I got told YEARS ago that the cameras on the west gate bridge can’t catch you for speeding because the movement in the bridge makes it impossible to accurately judge speed. An engineer told me this and it sort of broadly sounds plausible but I’ve never been able to confirm it.

you know what you have to do...

I was driving the other day, turned into a street and there was a woman with her back to the traffic, standing in the middle of the road taking a photo up the street. It didn't make much sense to me.

She steps off the road, I drive past, I look in the rear view mirror and she had gone back to the footpath and was running up the hill.

So the whole point of the photo was no doubt to take a picture of the hill to post on social media that she ran up it FFS.

Feels more like a gripe with social media than traffic?

This article confirms what you were told. That information could be out of date but the Westgate Bridge cameras don't show up on the current road safety camera map.

I always assumed they weren’t operating as they are old rust buckets and not upgraded like all the other fixed cameras out there. Obviously just used as a deterrent.

They tried a different style of camera near me for a while, it obviously never passed testing and never went live. But they left it in place for a couple of years and people kept slowing down for it. Then the vandals did their work on it so they removed it.

It made me wonder how the camera notifications for GPS are set. I regularly travel under the Princes Freeway/Point Wilson road bridge. I get a notification each time although the cameras haven't been there for a couple of years. They show up on the Victoria road safety camera map so maybe GPS companies are relying on government data - which may be false. You can see where the cameras used to be.

I’ve always assumed they were set by people driving past. Although that’s the apps on phones and I’m not sure about GPS devices.

Although I’ve noticed Google maps has added them in as mobile speed cameras and they’re always miles off their actual location.

Yep, the cameras were never commissioned and the equipment was taken out in 2010 when the bridge was widened. Only the poles and casing were left, presumably for the psychological impact. It works because I still back off to 80 when I drive past them even though I know the boxes are empty.

What time of day are you driving the Westgate bridge that you can even get up to 80km?
