I would have thought that the spate of re-signings and will to come back from behind against tough opposiiton could be seen as evidence of the players playing for the coach.

On the other hand, in my experience comments from articles in the HS or CM rank up there with Facebook pages in terms of uninformed rage-filled delusion.

Was thinking exactly the same thing reading through this thread. Some really naive posts on here.

Really think the only way Voss will succeed is if he has a quality (Mark Thompson-like) mentor. Doesn't seem to have the smarts to do it on his own. Mark Harvey's probably meant to be that guy but ultimately Harvey is just a guy who wasn't good enough at his original club and will never coach be head coach at an AFL side again. Terrible choice of mentor by the Brisbane administration.

I couldn't disagree more and think you are underselling Mark Harvey and his contribution to the current Fremantle list massively. What evidence is there to suggest that Harvey wasn't good enough. He got Freo to a prelim final and no doubt would have progressed further if given the opportunity.

Not sure I agree either that he isn't capable or "good enough" to be head coach again. He seems pretty highly rated on the Bulldogs board.

Of course history will show that Freo replaced him with Lyon, but I think you will find a lot of Freo people rate Mark quite highly and were disgusted in the manner that Harvey was replaced.

I reckon a lot of people's opinions are swayed by the Vic media groupthink that Bomber Thompson, Rodney Eade and Mark Williams are the only experienced mentors worth mentioning, but I'd hazard to guess that if Harvey was in Melbourne he would be regraded a lot more.

I for one am rapt that we are able to acquire someone of Harvey's calibre and that Harvey wanted to come to Brisbane and personally think it is insulting to suggest otherwise.

One other point...its a bit insulting to an experienced and elite footy person such as Voss to even suggest that he doesn't or won't have the smarts to be senior coach in his right.

Whilst still not entirely convinced on Voss, like any of the other 17 footy departments in the league, provided he has a full compliment of the right support staff, then success will be more likely than unlikely, irrespective if one of the assistant's is more credentialed and coached senior AFL footy than the others.

But to insinuate Voss is a total numpty and needs someone holding his hand is nothing short but disrespectful.

Bomber Thompson is a mentor to hird ? Yet they still made some colossal mistakes last year.

From a few discussions I have had with industry people Harvey is considered a very good development coach but not a great game day coach and a poor handler of the media. I think he makes an excellent assistant but like any team you need to ensure your coaching strength's and weaknesses complement each other.

Interesting, i can remember watching freemantle under Harvey and thinking they were a well coached/ drilled side.

That may not be inconsistent with what you've heard Quigley, if it was about putting in place structures that got the best out of and developed young kids, but I would have probably given him some credit for his game day coaching too. Hard to argue with the media side of things though

As a member this is extremely disappointing,i believe that the playing group are not playing for the coach ,the selection policy is mystifying to say the least,we don't apply enough pressure to the ball carrier ,we don't have second and third efforts ,and the current forward make up is incapable of kicking a winning score and I cannot identify a game plan this all get's down to coaching.Angus should spend some time out in the stands and hear the comments from the rank and file members.I have the utmost respect and admiration for Michael as a player and a person however a wonderful playing career does not maketh the coach. As a club there has been no improvement over the past 5 years in fact we are going backwards, given the playing list we really should be somewhere competing for the eight. Our two memberships will not be renewed next year
Fancy posting what I presume is a quote without attributing to anyone, anywhere. Where did you pluck that from? I am sure there are plenty of people who know nothing that buy memberships on a whim and jump off when we're losing. They're know as "bandwagoners".
the selection policy is mystifying to say the least
Maybe it is but gee it's tiresome reading the negative opinions of punters who have no intimate knowledge of how individuals are really developing or how they are performing the tasks they are actually set. Patty K. is a great example, seemingly shining in the reserves but can't get a game. Baffling it may seem, but obviously he is lacking in some area that the coaches demand. You don't leave players out for no reason.
Angus should spend some time out in the stands and hear the comments from the rank and file members
Yeah, because when it comes to making possibly the biggest footy AND business decision for the club, you should listen to the punters in the stand after they've consumed some over priced ale.
there has been no improvement over the past 5 years
Again the "5 years" argument. Daft, just daft.
given the playing list we really should be somewhere competing for the eight
Someone's having a lend of themselves. 3 aging veterans, 4 or 5 very mature players, a small handful the right mix of youth and experience and a plethora of virtual rookies. It's the young and very young that we have and will be building that will carry us into finals.
What's that word? Developing. An exercise undertaken while re-building. Something we have been doing for 2 and a half years.
And here we are back to that dopey 5 year argument.

If the bandwagoners want to get off now, good, they're taking up seats I might want to use.

Watch them crawling back to buy a membership when the Lions start winning next year. I wonder if he/she would have said this after the Geelong win. What a daft way of looking at things.

Poor comment by that person on the courier mail article. We have to stick by the club and support the coach. The club has been blessed with three flags and an era of success. We are rebuilding and the list is right around the corner from playing finals. Tough times ahead, but I can see the light at the end of the tunnel. Go Lions!

The sad reality is that this article highlights just how long we've been fighting with one hand tied behind our back... and how little support we've received during an expansion period where money was being thrown around like confetti. Until the AFL decides to ensure there is at least the appearance of a level playing field across all aspects of the game - both on and off the field, then the poorer teams will continue to be under resourced, under staffed, under coached and as a result struggle even more to attract and retain players.

Against that back ground, and despite what some flippantly describe as unimportant, we resign players. Players who could slug their guts out at another club with far better chances according to some instead of flogging their guts out here. Why would they do that? Why would people who live, breathe, eat and sleep footy back Voss?

More over why would they risk future success, both financially and in football terms if they didn't know or feel something we "experts" didnt? This is their livelihood, their passion and their child hood dreams. For us its a bit of fun, for them its reality. Its life. And its the most important thing in the world to them.

I'm willing to admit that this year has disappointed me at times. As I'm sure it disappointed most of us... including the coach and players.

I'm also happy to admit that I don't know if someone else could do more or better with what we have to offer on and off the field.

I'm not so blind as to not see both sides of this argument.

But what I do know is that while Voss continues to have the players playing for him, while he is under resourced and most likely under remunerated along with his team reading between the lines, and has the passion and drive to give it his all day in and day out despite the daily crucifixion by media know it alls then he deserves the chance to try and finish what he started. I just cant imagine another person who would care as much about the success of the Lions as he does.

Lets hope the AFL ride in like shining knights and top up the coffers.
Lets hope that we get a full compliment of paid and resourced coaches.
Lets hope we get world class training and support facilities.
Lets hope we pay the full salary cap this year.

Then, when things are balanced, fair and equitable, we can seriously sit down and critique the job Voss has done. When things beyond his passion, commitment and history to the club aren't so critical as they are now in our lop sided, disadvanted world. A world where we simply cant complete on anything other than pride and faith.

I suspect its those very things that are the reason so many players still have the belief. Somehow Voss has instilled a pride and passion for the Lions that seems to go beyond dollars alone.

For those who want to see him gone I ask this. Would anyone else have given what he has with the resources that he has? Would they have stuck around when the dollars got tight? I cannot see another experienced coach tolerating or even entertaining the idea of coaching here without the resources. Especially Paul Roos.

I cant help but wonder just what success Voss might have had if he taken over Collingwood instead of Buckley. Or Carlton instead of Malthouse? Clubs with money, resources, fame and attention.

As long as we are stable, as long as the players and staff have faith, and as long as the glimpses we get keep coming with growing regularity he deserves the extra 2... even if its based on his faith in the club as much as it is in theirs with him.

Spending money on memberships for some people = quite a lot of money and they sacrifice other things to be able to afford it. A lot of people go for entertainment and its just not worth the money when we're down the ladder a bit. I don't think people stop supporting the team.

I mean ill support the lions and buy memberships etc win or lose. However, theAfl can be a bit of a patience game, no surprise that some people hold these views.

5 years ago our list was shot! If it wasn't an expansion period imagine a few of the names we could of had! Saying that I'm pretty happy with our young players coming through . It would be good to see karnezis and polec playing good footy at the afl level but you can't have everything

Brisbane Lions coach Michael Voss winning back support of fans with side's spirited displays
3 July 2013
Greg Davis

THINGS are looking up for Lions coach Michael Voss - he is winning back the support of Queensland's AFL public as well as having claimed the scalps of Essendon and Geelong this season.

Despite the inability of Brisbane to string together wins to advance their finals race claims, couriermail.com.au’s poll conducted yesterday and today revealed a lift in the number of respondents who believe he should keep his job for next year.

Voss is understood to be closing in on a two-year contract extension at the Gabba and extra financial support for the cash-strapped Lions football department. Two months ago, only 35 per cent of respondents to a couriermail.com.au poll said Voss should be Lions coach next year.

A second poll, in light of The Courier-Mail's exclusive story that the Lions board are coming to the conclusion that Voss warrants more time and greater expenditure in player development and coaching, shows 49 per cent of readers who took the poll believe he should get a new deal.

"At the end of the day they are board decisions (to reappoint the coach). I think Vossy has done a really good job," skipper Jonathan Brown said. "We started a fair way back a couple of years ago but a lot of the younger players are really coming on. It's a pretty exciting future going forward."

That's right, he's at North Albury with Jason Gram.
And impressing the locals, many of whom were rightly sceptical when his appointment was announced. The O&M is a strong league and the footy very physical but one local said to me that even at his age Aker stands head and shoulders above the competition in terms of skill. That's one area of his game that was never doubted. Has also been very generous with his time off the field and so far hasn't offended anyone as far as I know. You never know, he might even have the makings of an AFL coach. Good luck to him.
