Can't lose a grand final by a record margin if you never make the grand final.

some rambling thoughts to emphasise this point:

• the Australian Cricket Team holds the record defeat in a test match (675 runs versus England, 1928) — and until England joined them this year, had been the only nation in the history of the red ball game to lose after enforcing the follow-on (THREE times, 1894, 1981 and 2001).

• the Brazilian national team lost the 2014 World Cup semi final to Germany 7-1 — the Selecão’s first home loss in a competitive match since the 1975 Copa America, and their heaviest ever defeat in a World Cup match.

• the New York Yankees became the first and only team in MLB history to lose a seven game playoff series after holding a 3-0 lead, falling to the drought-breaking Boston Red Sox in 2004.

that Grand Final loss sucks, and we’ll never live it down in certain circles, but as with the examples above — if you’re a powerhouse repeatedly performing at the top tier of the highest level over a timeline spanning a century or more, you’re gonna cop an unprecedented, embarrassing, historical outlier at some stage.

The Boston Bruins copped it sweet this year. They recorded the best regular season in NHL history but then got sacked in the first round of the playoffs by the 8th seed after leading the series 3-1.

Don Cherry probably went and beat up a few players.

As the host nation no less, and then backed it up with a 3-0 loss to the Netherlands in the 3rd place playoff.

Sorry GremioPower.

That team was bad, and we knew it.

Those 2 big defeats showed it was also weak-minded.

We entered in a destructive cycle after HT against the Dutch in 2010 and we haven’t fully recovered since. The 2016 Olympic gold stopped the descent at least.

Will be interesting to hear what Tredrea has to say this week about that insipid performance yesterday.
I reckon he will say with 7 changes and away from home, it was on the cards, but if we play like that at home, against Collingwood, he will let it rip.

WGT's day in court coming up shortly...

True, however with the latter two cases they haven't recovered to make amends.

We got the Olympic Gold against Germany in Rio two years later.

So for the people who wanted Tredders to apologise when we won some h&a games, do they now need to apologise to Tredders now that we've lost one? Or is this just yet another thing that somehow only works in one direction?

Good on him and that's why we love him. Has always been an individual who stands up for what he thinks is right. I wouldn't say he solely turned the club around but **** me, it's not coincidence that everything changed right after that rd 3 loss and his rant.

Hope he wins. Forgive but don't forget.

Yeah, but I don't consider this making amends for what was a heavy home loss in the ultimate football tournament by such a powerful football nation against another powerful foe. Do you? I was hoping that Brasil would win the WC last time. I think they toyed with Croatia and got bitten, lost an opportunity to make amends.

It would be akin to Port's u19s (if we still had them) winning a flag soon after the 2007 afl gf debacle. After 2007, I felt and expressed to my mates that I expected us to be in the wilderness for at least ten years. They thought we'd make amends within five years. I'm not saying there's an absolute science to this of course but I wasn't confident about how our young players would cope with a national embarrassment which was also reported around the world. The club didn't do itself favours with its management of the club in the years following '07. I was hoping we would return shortly and clinch a flag to galvanise and re-establish the might of our club, knowing the club that it once was, but I was not at all confident and the result showed that it damaged us good and proper. We now have an appalling record against the club that inflicted this debacle on us.

I reckon it is quite rare that any team that has had a huge drubbing in the ultimate competition of a sport returns to amend for it in a relatively short timeframe. I expected the Yankees to have amended it by now, especially with their riches and history, but it's been a long time for them too.

I luv Tredders.
But I hope he gets hammered in this case.
Doing himself no favours.
Comes across as a dill.

I have to admit to not being aware of Brazil having enough people of German heritage to have a special day for them GP.

SA has quite a large number of people of German heritage, and possibly even more than any other part of the country, which reminds me of attending a preseason game the Maggies played against South Melbourne at the Lakes oval in the very early 1970's, which the Maggies won.

The locals were getting a bit restless, and when the result was beyond doubt in the last qtr I can still recall a bloke saying to me `you're team is full of krauts!' o_O

The team of 20 that day had a total of 4 players of German origin in it, Russell Ebert, Bruce Light, Trevor Obst and Neville Thiele, and from memory they were all 3rd generation Aussies whose grandparents were born in this country.
