Re: Wooden spoon not a motivating factor

Good. If we are shit we shouldn't hide from it.

Still we will probably win another 1 or 2 at some point and it's hard to see any other teams drop a game against the GC.

If we can't get the coaches we need the players so pick 4 would really help.

Re: Wooden spoon not a motivating factor

In Gray's defence, if he'd come out and said "we are motivated by not getting spanked by the spoon", then supporters are entitled to be p!ssed off that they weren't giving their all prior to that.

I think the reality is our players will be motivated to not get it, and I can also feel it in my bones that we'll rip another win or 2 out of the bag and one of the Qld teams will spoon it up.

You'll beat us in two weeks, but we'll also lose up at Metricon against the Suns.

Re: Wooden spoon not a motivating factor

i flog a lot in bay 13
trust me, we don't EVER want to have a wooden spoon.
ever.

Re: Wooden spoon not a motivating factor

Good news pick 4 is looking the goods, bringing us close to having a prime moving midfield we so badly.

I'm over finishing last, it will help bring reality to the club to get it's crap together.

Who cares, every club finsihes last at some stage.

Re: Wooden spoon not a motivating factor

People actually don't care if we get a spoon and get the the same pick we got 3 years ago for finishing 13th? Wow.

"Every club finishes last" is a cop out.

Re: Wooden spoon not a motivating factor

Do any of you think that this list is good enough NOT to win the spoon? It's a trainwreck full of young players who are just learning the game and mentally scarred individuals who have never recovered from the 07 GF.

If you want to build a successful side you can either stay at the shallow end of the pool and play around with a mediocre list and eventually you MAY jag a flag, or you can dive into the deep end, take your medicine and then get the hell out of there as quickly as possible.

We need marquee players that people will actually come and pay to see. Once upon a time we had several - Tredrea, Burgoyne x2, Pickett, Wanganeen etc. Now I struggle to find one.

If winning the spoon means we get the marquee players that we need, then the pragmatist in me suggests that it is the bitter pill we have to swallow.

It won't because we're not getting a choice of the best players - we're getting what is left over.

It's all relative though. The team that finishes 13th this year will get pick 12.

Which is why it makes no sense to win it THIS year. But someone has to, and if this list isn't good enough, whether that be mentally or physically, then it will be us.

Who the hell throws away winning positions against Gold Coast and Brisbane? A weak list, that's who.

Cynically I would suggest that the AFL waited to introduce Gold Coast and Western Sydney when they knew that a Victorian team wouldn't be at the bottom of the ladder. Just take a look at the bottom four: Port Adelaide, Gold Coast, Brisbane, Adelaide.

Adelaide I can see having a West Coast type bounce next year. The others? Not so much.

Dark times ahead for the PAFC faithful, I fear. :(

Re: Wooden spoon not a motivating factor

if anyone is unsure, go spend 2 days posting in the Bay 13

then come back and say you dont care if we ever have won a wooden spoon

trust me, we do NOT ever want a wooden spoon

finally boydy - some sense :D :p

Re: Wooden spoon not a motivating factor

This is the worst PAFC playing list ever.
Without question their attitudes about 'winning' the wooden spoon, and their complete lack of any historical proportions makes me ****ing sick.

I'm with some of the posters here...****ing hate our current list, and their attitudes.

I really hate the club at the moment too.

Nobody should be buying any more memberships, merchandise, season tickets in 2012 until the club and team earn our support and finances again, however long that takes.

sigh.... i suppose this thread should be bumped now we have lost again tonight...
we are really staring down the barrell now
Gold Coast have a win and we are a game clear last

Looking at our remaining games we are in real strife and looks like we will end up with our first spoon in under 100 years

Adelaide (away) 50/50
Collingwood (home) loss
Hawthorn (away) loss
Western Bulldogs (home) loss
Essendon (away) loss
Melbourne (home) loss

looking forward to picking up a Mark Murphy, Bryce Gibbs, Matthew Kreuzer, Jack Watts, Tom Scully, or David Swallow with our number 1 pick this year.....

....oh wait

why anyone would spend any time in that joke of a forum us beyond me

If we'd gotten this spoon 6 years ago we'd have gotten picks 1 and 2.

Now we get pick 4, and even if he comes good, our premiership window coincides with the GC and GWS juggernaut premiership windows.

Re: Wooden spoon not a motivating factor

Like it or not this year we are playing a young list under the worst conditions we've ever had it's no surprise where we are, we aren't on a level playing field with anyone else.

Part time Dr
Part time Physio (players lining up ffs in a professional league)
less coaches and some part time
92% of salary cap
no money to spend on anything
Coach who is spending game time teaching and not interested in results
selecting kids for the future

It's obvious the board and coach are in agreement that this year is going to be for reshaping the game plan and looking at who can do what and who can play where and good if we win but otherwise the future's the goal. It doesn't matter where we are in a game, pre-planned changes happen whether it be from man on man or to a zone they will change to play that style regardless of how much it hurts us for that time. Now normally I'd be well against tanking like this but it's clear that it's what they are doing and I'm become ambivalent, at the end of the day we finished 10th last season and everyone said we were shit even though we won 10 games so does it really matter that much.

Re: Wooden spoon not a motivating factor

Even if we finished 16th, with only GC behind us on percentage, that would be the equivalent of wooden spoon for mine.

History means nothing, if your present performance doesn't sustain its aura. The fact that we have been a proud club has done nothing to maintain people's respect for us in the past 4 years. If anything, it may have accelerated the derision that we have copped from all and sundry during this period, even when we were finishing 9th or 10th.

If getting the wooden spoon enables home truths to be accepted, off-field staff to be given their marching orders, changes to be made to managerial staff and multiple delistings/trades, I can live with that.

We have to bring quality to this playing list. As I see it, that means we need a top 5 pick, and the first PSD pick at the very least. Let's also not forget that GC will have a stack of first round and second round picks this year, for all of those funny Simon Phillips type trades they manufactured in last year's trading period.

We really are stuffed.

There are three games you can win ...

1 The Showdown @ AAMI
2 Western Bulldogs @ AAMI
3 Melbourne @ AAMI

Don't resign yourselves to winning "The Spoon". Draft picks come and go but "Spoons" are forever.

Do we finish with the Spoon?

Went on the ladder predictor and we finished 16th behind GC (won showdown and a cheeky won against Melbourne at AO) The 5 key games from here on in

Adelaide V Port Adelaide (need Port to win obviously)

Lions V GC ( What ever team than loses this can't win anymore from here on in (need Lions to win so we only need one more win, two if GC win)

GC V Adelaide (cant let the crows lose this one if we want to not finish last)

Port V Dee's (may come down to us requiring a win in are last game of the year, hope not though)

Dont like this because out of those 4 games port only play in 2, dont like not controlling out own fate

(this is assuming that the only wins we get from here on in are Crows and Melbourne)
My Bottom 5

17th GC 4(wins) 0 18 Gets pick 4+ a PP
16 Port 4 0 17 Gets pick 6+ a PP
15 Bris 4 0 17 Gets Pick 8+ a PP
14 Crows 7 0 15 Gets pick 10 with no PP
13 Rich 7 1 14 Gets pick 12

With your ladder does port get the spoon?

http://www.afl.com.au find the link next to ladder

had a Pies Geelong GF btw

Re: Do we finish with the Spoon?

how can we not, it's history right?

we're playing with:

1 Rookie ruckman (Lobbe)
4 Big Fwds (Schulz, Cornes, Salter, Pettigrew)
3 Taggers (Cassisi, Cornes, Thomas)
3 Skiiers (Rodan, Ebert, Pearce)
0 B Grade or higher players.

Instead of 6 True Defenders, 5 True Midfielders, 1 True Ruckman, 6 True Forwards and a deep bench.

Gotta get the spoon to feed all of our babies.
