Still hasn’t sunk in that we’re landing these 2 guns. Every time I think about it I get pumped up. Total rejuvenates our midfield and the chain reaction is massive. Short gets to return to his best position at half back. Baker can go back to half forward. Sonsie has bulls to feed it out to him to use his class, ditto Bolton. Lynch and co have a midfield that will win clearances to keep the supply up. Clearances again will mean the defence don’t have as much to do

I still have an automatic assumption that our midfield is only good when they are all fit. And that we don't have the big bodied inside mids to really compete. When I think of Hopper and TT it just make sme smile.

I reckon apart from the engine room (mids) we had about the best team in 2022. Which is liek sayign you have the best F1 car, except that the engine keeps blowing up. Can't win with he engine blowing up.

Now we have just about equal best engine and the rest of the team should still be as good. AND our new game plan is going to be fully embedded. So look out in 2023! I'm hoping for 14.

It is pretty incredible, speed, foot skills and maybe lack of tap ruck only areas our overall list is not elite but still very good in those areas.

Serious question

Is there a better starting midfield than
Prestia
Taranto
Hopper

I’d say the Dees with Trac, Oliver have the best top 2 but they drop off with Viney as the 3rd
While it's interesting to compare starting midfields, sorting of like comparing starting 22's, I think that the depth of the midfield is just as (if not more) important.

Our 2nd rotation mids are better than any team in the comp, particularly when you factor in their ability to be more than competitive (dangerous) when pushing forward and just as effective when we haven't got the ball, which could be said for our starting mids too.

I think the Melbourne starting mids (combined with Gawn) might just have it over ours but who do they have for their 2nd rotation? Harmes, Jordan, Brayshaw? Whereas we have Cotchin, Martin, Bolton?

Their starting mids are good but then who do they kick it to? Pretty much a non existent forward line consisting of Fritsch, flopper Brown and Pickett. That line was their downfall and the reason why they went out in straight sets. Whereas we have Lynch, Reiwoldt, Cumberland, Junior, Martin, Bolton which in turn make both our starting mids and and 2nd rotation mids much more effective.

I know that you're aware of this but I find it more concise when you factor in the whole picture.

I agree with all that

I didn’t mention depth because I think we win that clearly but the starting 3 I mentioned isn’t as obvious but you can definitely mount an argument

On paper Melb, WB have a better starting 3 but we regularly beat the Dogs on the field. The only other midfield I'd have in the conversation is Freo's but our depth is ridiculous, Brisbane match us with depth but not in quality.

Mel - Oliver, Petracca, Viney, Brayshaw/Sparrow (5)
WB - Bont, Libba, Macrae, Dunkley/Smith, Treloar (6)
Rich - Prestia, TT, Hopper, Martin/Bolton, Cotchin/Graham (7)
Fre - Brayshaw, Fyfe, Brodie, Serong (4)
Carl - Cripps, Walsh, Hewett, Cerra/Kennedy (5)
Syd - Parker, Rowbottom, Warner, Mills/Heeney (5)
Bris - Neale, Lyons, Ashcroft?, Zorko, McCluggage/Rayner, Berry (7)
Coll - Adams, Crisp, DeGoey, Pendles, Lipinski, Daicos? (6)

For pure inside with x factor.

Prestia
Hopper
Dusty or shai

We want to make sure we win first possession

Prestia
Hopper
Tarranto

We want to go full offence

Prestia
Dusty
Shai

The 4th spot has so much depth and flexibility short, Graham, Hopper Tarranto sonsie Ross etc.

Not many midfield bat this deep

Yeah, Melbourne's midfield depth was also exposed with Petracca being injured. If they lose Oliver or Petracca or Gawn (not so much now with Grundy coming in) then their weak depth makes them vulnerable.
