Just on the "extra list spot" commentary, we signed up Borlase again when we already had Burgess, we could have taken an opportunity from a player we rated to a ruck pick. I say this rating Borlase for his effort but picking and signing him up against an opportunity to have a good player in 3 years...

We are still a way off having a challenging squad and we need to stop over rating it, honestly, sometimes I think our supporters are seconds away from saying our squad is stacked

I don't know why we are looking for a midfielder in this draft, our midfield is stacked

Don't worry, despite plenty of quality midfielders available, there is key defender there to be taken... ;)

His few games have blown away anything many of our players have played... Ie Murphy, delisted McHenry just to name a few

The risk there is you're comparing apples and oranges. Give Murphy/McHenry 5 games as a full time mid and they'll likely have 1-2 games where they get 25 disposals and a handful of clearances*.

*Not to say we should do that, just that its easy to put up big numbers when put into those roles - and both are/were capable accumulators, and in McHenrys case, arguably to his detriment.

I’m not a fan of taking a ruckman in the draft for three reasons
1. It’s the most over-rated position on the ground - many so called elite rucks haven’t won flags
2. They take too long to develop as a 18 year old draftee- until they are AFL ready
3 Always opportunities to trade for rucks, or grab a ruck through FA

Apart from Gawn who won a flag during a compromised Covid competition, not to many elite rucks have won flags

Even this year - a base wage player in Fort did his job against a highly paid player in Grundy

A ruck needs to be ultra competitive- not elite, and we don’t need to find them via the draft

Would Sydney have made the GF without Grundy?
Would Brisbane have made the GF without Oscar?
Sydney’s midfield stunk, why waste so much capital on midfield only to let you down?
Sydney hardly tackled, blame Grundy.
Yep so easy to trade in a ruck, why didn’t we this year to replace our ruck who we dropped again?
If we drafted Moyle in the midseason draft over Parnell we wouldn’t have had our attempt to recruit him knocked back, he’d be on our list.

The issue is that we don't find ruckmen at all, elite or otherwise - or even seem to try to. I don't care how we get one - draft, trade, RFA, UFA, DFA, SSP, kidnap one off the damn street for all I care, but we need to get one. Our lack of depth behind ROB (or even, god forbid, pressure on his spot in the team) is outright negligence on the part of our list management.

I understand that he chose us because his Mrs and Cumming's Mrs are best mates ().

The negotiation was interesting (at least for me).

We apparently offered our 2nd and 3rd for their 2nd, or 2x3rds (ours and Melbourne's), for Peatling. They wanted a 2nd outright.

We might have been leveraging them needing a better 3rd than their own to get Stringer (which ended up not being true).

Peatling was probably worth an early second.

But their negotiations were based around a 2nd being highly valuable and 3rds being worth nothing, while we were effectively saying 2x3rds = 1x2nd.

If we were both telling the truth, they got a 2nd for Peatling and gave up nothing in return, and we got Peatling for free.

It will be interesting to see what we do with those picks next year. If we swap 2x3rds for a 2nd, Peatling was free. If we could do that, but take players with the 2x3rds, then they paid us for Peatling. But if they don't pick any player after their 2nd, they got a 2nd for Peatling and gave nothing back.

That would be a perfect negotiation (including that we did in the last 10 minutes of the negotiation what we could have done in the first 10 minutes, but just took all the time alotted before doing it).

Mitch Stevens likely where the 2025 picks might come in handy. Unlike Tyler Welsh who had the fanfare from U16's onwards Mitch seems to be flying well below the radar whilst developing nicely at the Gippy Power.

Is that Mark or Scott Stevens' son? I liked both those guys, but Mark Stevens especially was a gun.

But its not even that complex. We easily could have drafted a ruck this year or traded in one thats been let go (Max Knobel?)....but we don;t have a spare list spot. I see not getting a ruck this year not because its too hard, but we made a poor lit decision to not have an open spot for one and that issue has been discussed ad nauseum here and most of us agree it was a bad call to not make one available.

Pretty early going, but is Mitch likely to be 2nd or 3rd round bid, do you feel?

From next year, bids at pick 44 or later are free. If Mitch is late 2nd/ 3rd, we have plenty of options for the picks including grabbing a 2nd. If earlier, the 3rds probably stay where they are.

Yeah pretty interesting, presumably on draft night 2025 after all the academy etc, our picks will come right in and then be worth more?

2025 pick values go way down after the first round, and no points after end of 3rd round. If we had picks 42 and 48 (ie 1/3 and 2/3 through the 3rd round) it would be worth less than last 2nd round pick (36). Two very early 3rd round picks would be a mid 2nd in points value, so might GET a mid to late 2nd for someone wanting points.

BUT, with bids being matched the late picks will come in . In 2023 (crazy year for bids) and 2022 (normal?), there were 52 picks taken by the end of the 3rd round (-2 v expected), and only 7 in the 4th (-13). 7 5th round picks were taken in 2023 but none in 2022.

Recruiters don’t get the benefit of hindsight, it’s literally their job to pick the best players available and especially when its glaringly obvious we needed another ruck on our list not a frigging 12 year old back pocket!
Yeah the problem is that it’s been glaringly obvious for 4 years, given:
1) most clubs tend to have a developing ruck on their list at all times
2) ROB has been on a downward slope since his B&F year
