his back-end to 2019 was really good. in 2020 he came 3rd in the PCM and was rated as one of the competition's top mid/fwds. and in 2021 he averaged the most disposals he has in his career. how "bad" he's been with Hawthorn isn't really an accurate reflection of his performance at the club. his body just hasn't been right all the time but when he's been fit he's been good.

he makes our fwd line look so much more competent when he's in good touch. i really hope we keep him for the rest of his career, however long that is

Crazy to think he polled more Brownlow votes in 2021 than he did in his 2015 AA year when he kicked 53 goals averaging 20 touches a game.

26 and 2 from a half fwd flank. They're elite numbers.
Reckon he had 3x Goal Assists as well.
1 year please. Playing well and doesn't need to be comfortable.
Is his output because he doesn't have a contract
Agreed. Clearly deliberatly injured himself in previous years, to increase Fortnite time. Now he's out of contract, he's put his Fortnite account on hold to deliver back-to-back 'Team of the Week' level performances.

Selfish guy...

Vanilla flavoured, as usual.

He's played like rubbish for a long time this season and last. His current burst of form coincides with a burst at Box Hill (cause he was playing like rubbish) and also being in contract talks.

good to see him lift his game to where it should be.

His last two weeks his movement looks out of this world better, whatever burgess is doing if wingard can stay fit and active next year he is a completely different player, I doubt he would want to leave if it all starts working again.
Fingers crossed he can stay healthy

Chad being fit and injury free makes him one of our best players. So creative with ball in hand, capable of freakish changes of directions and goal kicking. Sublime winning the ball in the midfield too when given the chance too.

We don't have the cream on top types after our elder statesman retire, we need him to stay healthy.

It's so obvious he doesn't really care about playing football, he'd probably be getting 50+ and five goals at least if he'd just pull his finger out.

If anyone ever needed an example of how soft he is, remember that time Luke Hodge wrapped his head around a goal post?

Chad walked it off and just kept playing.

Absolutely soft as butter cry baby move.

Excellent couple of weeks. Obviously we have had poor value for money over the course of this contract. Whether he stays or goes, he will be earning less than half what he's currently on next year. What he's shown in the last couple weeks is that he can still play good league footy. You'd think if a club offers much we'd trade, but I don't see clubs offering much by way of trade capital. I also expect Chad will want to stay, so i'm thinking he might be re-signed to a 1 year deal with a trigger.

Chad Wingard 2023.

Rounds: 1 - 9 (7 games)
Disposals: 11 per game (77 total)
Tackles: 1 per game (8 total)
Goals: 2 in total.

Box Hill break. / injury

Rounds: 16 - 21 (6 games)
Disposals: 20 per game (121 total)
Tackles: 3 per game (17 total)
Goals: 7 in total.

The difference in Chad from the early season to how he is playing now is chalk and cheese. A different player after his stint at Box Hill. The guy now looks and plays like an asset to the club. Looks like a leader, on field, compared to some of his efforts at the start of the season. Reckon tackles are a key stat for a player like Chad and he is bringing the heat. Also less complaining towards the umpires.

Impressive return after a well deserved Box Hill kick up the rear. Well done Sammy and well done Chad.

Hope to see more of the same in 2024 and beyond !

Good post by LE ... but,

it does raise the the question in my mind as to why a 30yo leader on a high-salary, who has delivered some of the rubbish he has, needed to be kicked up the rear in order to start earning his pay. I'm not so easily swayed by his cameos, and not sure that such a complex character helps our development.

If his mindset has all been body and injury related then I will stand corrected, but not so sure this is the case.

Sorry, but this BS that he “needed to be kicked up the rear” does my head in.

He’s been able to get his body right, he’s been able to build confidence. He’s not performing better because he’s out of contract or because Sam put a gun to his head.
It’s quite the opposite, he’s performing well because the coach has backed him in and given him a cuddle when he was at his lowest.
