Appears to be trying his guts out - so much so that he's almost hitting the contest too hard if that makes sense (taking his eye off the ball at the critical moment-which shows he's still a bit rusty) - he'll settle, let's hope it's sooner rather than later.

Agree, not playing on instinct. Did a couple of nice things today, I’m hoping as week goes by he will feel more at home and grow into the season

I get the feeling Chad is still a "pre-season block" off getting fitness. Instead of taking an extra 2-4 weeks to really re-build his tank, he was rushed in undercooked.

Now he's playing, it's far, FAR harder to try and build during the season, so it's just managing what he can and trying to slowly build over the course of the year.

He also is clearly struggling with our systems, so often he is getting caught either 1.5 or 0.5 of a kick away. He's finding space in dangerous areas at times, but we aren't looking there - especially with the switch, he's getting to the target area WAY too soon - so soon his opponent shuts him down (and the entire movement). In combination with Nash, it's leading to a lot of promising movements getting paused through wing/HBF.

Similarly, when he does win the ball, the areas he is looking is not where our players are - there is a lack of synchronisation. I think a big part of this comes with the type of gung-ho contested gameplan he was used to at Port, compared with the ultra-cautious approach we try to use.

The patterns will come in time, as will the endurance, and we may see a far happier Chad.

Think he is trying too hard
Kicking three in his first game on reflection probably wasn’t a great thing and he is now busting a gut but is slightly off.

Forward line still isn’t functioning properly as they get in the way of each other but with time and perseverance it will come together and then......

Hes now played 3 games for 1 quarter........ Im impatient but the bloke is a dual all australian meant to be one of the top talents in the country. Certainly isnt playing like what we are paying for

Mate you need to chill out. All I’ve seen you do today is attack Hawthorn players without any logic or consideration for circumstance. In one day you’ve managed to have a crack at JOM, Wingard, Mirra and Nash. Have some bloody faith in your club and its players.

Geelong games get me seriously mad, half of my family is geelong. I cant handle it, i lose my shit and all rationale but come on arent you guys all disappointed with his efforts. 150 games we deserve better than that

Extremely disappointed/ pissed off with this guys efforts today. Showed no endeavour or want to even try. Serious concerns for whether he really wants it. Was the issue at port
Looked very much like he did at port past two years. Huge concerns!

How do you have 96 likes?

Such quality posting

He may not be showing 100% effort but there were plenty of times he wasn't used as an option when he could have been. Just remember he had no pre season after Christmas and players are always a bit flat after the first game back.

He seems close to having that touch back, have some faith before riding players

Got to call a spade a spade- Chad was shite today. Started well but had little influence after halftime. Didn't have the confidence/ambition to jump at the footy and was abysmal at centre square stoppages, paying no respect to his opponents. If Wingard wasn't a high profile trade he'd be dropped this week without hesitation.

If you can ever motivate Chad to build his tank and pressure his opponent going the other way you'd have one of the top handful of goal kicking, clearance winning midfielders on your hands. I suspect Clarko realises this which is why he gave up what he did, with Chad's calf injury having temporarily suspended these ambitions.

The Hawks showed great faith at the trade table with Port in acknowledging you have to give up talent to get talent (compare to Dodoro @ Essendon) and so I would hope the football gods would reward this behaviour by eventually delivering a fit and firing Chad to give you the kind of joy he brought Port fans.

In hindsight and as good as 2013-2015 were, it was probably to Port's detriment as it all came so easy for him as he could phone the training sessions in while still producing a highlight reel long enough to fill a feature film. So at Hawthorn, I would not mark him on what he is producing now, but on whether he finds it within himself (or is motivated) to building that fitness base and fulfil the potential of his phenomenal talent.

Great post, we are really early days but Hawks fans also have to be patient and remember that Chad has one role in our team. He's not going to replace Tom Mitchell and Cyril at the same time. Clarko has identified that we need Chad inside 50 to crumb, chase, jump and create. He's done a reasonable job so far with one or two flashes... I think the fact that he corked the captain on the eve of his first game says a lot about how much he still has to learn about his teammates and our system (Roughead-Breust-Puopolo-Gunston have been leading and blocking for each other for almost a decade). Sometimes it's hard to believe how impatient we supporters are. I'm super excited to have him play for our team, and like you I hope he keeps thrilling.

His centre bounce efforts yesterday were beyond dismal. If it was any other player I'm sure hawks fans would be screaming but he escapes criticism for it. So so poor defensively in there

I was sitting right on the edge of the Punt Road end forward pocket yesterday - right at ground level. Chad tried his absolute guts out yesterday with little reward or flair. The fact that 10 of his 16 touches were contested does not surprise me at all. With Gunston playing down the back or through the middle most of the game and Geelong making it hard for all our small forwards outside of Poppy - it's not as if Chad just sat up in the square and waited for it to come his way. There were 2-3 moments where he obviously suffered from a lack of communication with his teammates where this will get better as time goes on. I noticed at one stage he could have contested for a mark but left it for Breust, which was the correct option, but Breust dropped it so it looked bad on TV most likely but it was the right call. Some peanuts around me were crucifying him for it. One such peanut went ballistic at him late in the third quarter and was promptly told to shut up by 15 or so Hawks fans.

He wasn't flashy yesterday but I was pleased that he was still putting in.

Thought he was good. So far he reminds me of Burgoyne in his first year where he's doing the team and hard nut stuff, but hasn't fit in yet, and the err passionate fans that don't really pay attention will say they are a waste as with a few posts ago, but I've seen that song and dance too many times.

Anytime you've got players like that it's a blessing, because you've already got a real impact player that will be better as time goes on.

It's very obvious that he's still finding his feet in the team. There are still plenty of instances in games where he and another Hawks player are stepping on each others feet (maybe sometimes literally).

The synergy with his teammates will develop quickly over the next couple months. Once they're all used to how each other play we'll start to see some really nice team goals.

There is always a bizarre media obsession with one team 'winning' a particular trade. Early days indeed but this looks like a good one for both clubs. Clearly Wingard had stagnated at port and needed a fresh move while port have finally acquired a defender who can use the footy (Burton) and drafted some talented kids to boot.
If the idiot Cornes did his research he would get the comparison right in the first place. It's Scrimshaw Vs Burton not Wingard Vs Burton seeing as Scrimshaw is playing the exact same role. Right now there isn't much between them so Kane Cornes can STFU.
