Welcome Welcome to Hawthorn : Jack Ginnivan!

I didn't say it was a head high tackle - but he did get "it" in the face.

The umpires gave carte blanche for the Cats treatment on Ginnivan.
The issue that’s been discussed is Ginnavin not getting free kicks for head high tackles - which I agree he isn’t getting, despite them being there.

However watching the game on TV channel 7 isolated and replayed the incident which caused his blood nose - and it was clearly Parfitt’s shoulder when in a pack. Umpires couldn’t see that.

All I’m saying is there’s no connection between the head high tackles not being given and him going off with a bloodied nose. I don’t see how you can say Parfitt did what he did because the umpires aren’t paying free kicks to Ginni.

I'm saying cats players didn't give a sh!t because they knew they would get away with it.

"We've spoken to Hawthorn and reiterated as we did in 2022 to all clubs that we don't want players to lead with their head. What I want to be really clear on is we don't have a different set of rules for a player; we don't have a different set of rules for a club or a team; we officiate our games all the same way within the rules."

.
41 HTB's paid for all of Round 2
17 HTB's paid on the Thursday night in the Brisbane Collingwood game

Yeah they really officiate all the games in the same way

I'm calling it: in the next 4 years, Gini will be key to ending Collingwoods finals campaigns.

My ideal situation is us finishing eighth in 2025, Collingwood finishing fifth and Ginni kicking a goal to claim the lead in the final two minutes of an elimination final.
We might not hear the cheers over the boos, but my god it'd be worth it
Absolutely, I can mentally see this happening. He is a X Factor, he will play like a Abblet Senior and eliminate the pies.

And then he goes out that night, celebrate with two hookers and some blow, which would be photographed and posted on Bigfooty!

You gotta take the good with the bad!

Excited for him and the Hawks!

He can’t win either way.

I honestly don’t understand why a hard nosed former player who was widely respected within the entire competition, still causes people here angst - despite having retired 18 months ago. He lives rent free in so many posters’ heads.

Everyone would have loved to have Joel Selwood play at Hawthorn. He is one of the all time greats.

He has no obligation to comment on everything happening in a game, and for some to call him a “coward” because he didn’t chime in - gee whiz. 🙄

Did people expect Leigh Matthews to chime in as a commentator when players got belted behind play and had their jaw/nose broken (as he did to Bruns in 1985)?

Or Hodge to comment when a player uses his hip to strike another player in side of the head, possibly into a point post (as he did to Wingard in 2015)?

Of course not.

We’re in heated disagreement, HedgeFund.

This is in no way analogous to Matthews and Hodge. Every footballer, and certainly every footy commentator who’s played, has been involved in violent incidents (if you call it that) and probably been reported during their careers. But that doesn’t mean that they should or should not commentate on incidents of violence on the field.

In the Selwood case, we’re not taking about anything of the sort.

This is the thing. Selwood (great player that he was) throughout his career created controversy because, every time he was tackled, he lifted his arm like a periscope.

The current push back on high tackles on players like Ginnivan and Watson and others could virtually be called the “Selwood directive” because it was primarily because of Selwood’s free-chasing technique, that the umpires were directed not to pay frees on players who raised their arms (a la Selwood).

So now Selwood’s a special commentator at a game where this very controversy resurfaces and, although he’s obviously getting good money to provide special comments, he acts like a deaf mute when his co-commentators opine ad nauseum on the various head high tackle incidents on the day. Seriously, that was pathetic on the part of Selwood.

It’s precisely because of the above that Selwood should have inserted himself in the discussion. It actually would have been interesting to see what he would have said on the subject. That’s what they pay him for.

I’ll tell you this - Matthews or Hodge, in Selwood’s shoes, wouldn’t have remained dumb struck. They would have said something like “yeah well, in my day I got away with a lot of that but I can see why the AFL has been concerned to change the interpretation”. Or, knowing Lethal and Hodge, they would have been far more interesting on the subject - but neither of them would have closed up like Selwood did.

And by the way, Matthews has certainly commented publicly at various times about some of the violence he has committed on the field. He hasn’t shied away from that and he has certainly expressed regret for some of his actions.

So, Selwood as a special comments commentator? Nah.

Andrew Dillon really is an awful CEO.

In my view, the jury’s still out. At present, he’s an improvement on Gil who was just a self-entitled prig.

I’m aware that Dillon has made some private comments to footy people on significant matters which are commendable but am waiting to see if he follows through on his good intentions. That will be the decider as far as I’m concerned. If it transpires he’s just paying lip service as his predecessors have, then I’ll certainly agree with you.

Once again, may I post in your forum?

With the ducking, Jack is hoist on his own petard.

He snaffled some early frees for us by ducking, then some media figures pled on it and it seems like clubs complained and the umps mustve listened because the frees dried up.

High profile players like Pendles and most notoriously Selwood can get away with it, or not get pinned. Ginnivan wasn't high profile enough to overcome prejudice.

It hasn't crippled his game, he has more strings to his bow and he can do midfield , maybe not centre bounces yet.

They all have the preconceived idea that he is a ducker and playing for free kicks and no evidence is going to change that for them.
He didn't even duck or drop his knees on Monday like he used to at Collingwood, he lifted his arm to tackles that were going high anyway

Let’s add some photo facts to the discussion. I know, I know, photos taken out of context can lie, but I have done my best to get reasonable shots.

Photo 1: Ginni’s blood nose came from incidental contact of a shoulder during a pile-on just before a ball up. Definitely should not have been a free kick.
Photos 2,3,4 & 5: make up your own mind.
Photo 6: 100% an over the shoulder free kick in a making contest. Not paid, umpires missed an obvious one.
Photos 7,8 & 9: make up your own mind

Good post Alite. Photo #6 is the worst for me, inexcusable

Surprised to see Ginni is 1.85m tall as those tackles are all missing the mark by some way. Would have assumed he is shorter looking at the number of head high shots.

Safe to say that if the first high tackle was called a free that the subsequent tackles may have been more carefully aimed.

Curious to know why someone who is shorter such as Dylan Moore, and who gets the ball in a similar zone on the ground doesn't have as many of these disputed head high tackles coming up each week. The answer may lie in team scouting reports.

Instead of reaching out to the Hawks, maybe the afl should have asked the umpires how & why they intentionally missed the obvious free kicks?
Get to the cause of the problem & then try to fix it.
Luv the Candy gif, miss him

What was worse he said that the Umps did not treat them differently because it was Ginnivan he was just unlucky …….. coming from the master himself 🤮

Absolutely ridiculous that he has a special commentary gig then... unless of course they mean a 'special needs' role.

What a joke.
