There was a lot of noise why we even gave away picks for him when we could have got him for free.

But what we know now the club must have wanted to make sure we 100% locked him away, and another club couldn’t swoop in and offer more money at the last minute.

I vaguely recall an interview with sleepy Mark during trade period and him saying we traded for him to show that we value him and want him at the club

Interesting when Sicily missed All Australian two years ago, it was probably the worst call I can remember. Their ‘reasoning’ was because he was playing key position (as we had very few other options) May was doing that ‘position’ better and wanted a more physical fullback. This is despite Sicily being the best defender (most coaches votes) that year and him easily playing the floating defender role as he is so versatile with and without the ball. All the rubbish justification from Healy and Cornes was about his ‘position’.

Now D’Ambrossio is rated the top 2 wingman, the talk is they probably won’t pick him because they need to fit other midfielders in they can’t squeeze into the starting midfield but who don’t play a very specialised position. I don’t necessarily think its the worst thing, depending who they pick, if they do this. But then it makes Sicily’s omission even worse that they switch their criteria and contradict themselves, and don’t pick D’Ambrossio.

100% If say Merret makes it instead of Mass that's probably not awful as Merret has had a very big year.

But that Sicily non selection still stinks to fight heaven. And that they picked f....g Maynard over him, what the actual hell that's an outright insult to our captain

Yes I'm still salty. But we watched Sicily play probably the best year I've ever seen from a defender in 2022 and he didn't even get picked due to some lame ass logic, that's f......d.

Geez , that's an awful list of people!
That Sicily snub will continue this season as well.
Burgoyne, Smith, Hodge, Mitchell and Gibson have been the ones to give way to ' other' options in the past . Oh, well, at least we win premierships to soften the blow.

Matthew Egan, or Mooney ahead of Buddy in 2007. Granted Geelong had some good individual seasons but Mooney copping an AA off a 52 goal regular season was ridiculous. Fewer goals than Buddy, Lloyd, Richo, Gehrig, Fevola and Scott Lucas who all missed selection.

It means a huge deal to players and can impact their contracts, opportunities post footy, etc, so regardless how much the selectors bungle it from time to time, it’s still a massive thing.

Particularly if it upsets Scum supporters even more re Mass.

This kid is a gun, and he's still growing each week. We knew his kicking was elite, but so is his run, and he had some great hands today too.
Most impressive are his hustle and toughness. They said he'd shirk contests, he hasn't done it once. He puts his body on the line, and goes in hard every time. Even had one of the commentators confusing him with Newk.

Getting him from Essendon for nothing makes it even better.
