It's a battle on two fronts. Sooky Swans over here and Jade in that WC/Hawthorn thread.

They still care a lot about Hawthorn don't they

#headf**ked
Jade is the same person who argued incessantly that Jobe Watson is/was a better player than Lance Franklin.

I think my fellow Swans fan has been a bit disingenuous regarding Tom Mitchell.

He's a very good extractor (would be league top 5 in this area), has great vision and hands to match. His foot skills are good but not great, whilst he's capable of kicking a difficult goal on the run from 50, his field passing is generally effective but not great.

I think he's a great get for you guys given where your list is at, I'm sure we would have liked to have kept him, but at the same time he was probably our most expendable midfielder with our salary cap issues.

In terms of style/ability he's probably closest to Matt Priddis, and like him he's capable of winning a Brownlow

We needed young Lewis and a Sammy replacements and he is well worth pick 14 to partly achieve this goal. Thanks for the post

Whn you say "Where your list is at"... tell me- where do you think your list is at? (just wondering)

Kind of OT, wait a minute, I'll just put my helmet on!!!!

We've just played off in a Grand Final and McVeigh and Grundy are our only 2 players currently in their 30's. I expect we're still a reasonable shot for a premiership at least over the next 2 seasons, notwithstanding the GWS juggernaut that has the potential to dominate with a 3peat like yourselves or the Lions.

You guys are rebuilding, I suspect Clarkson is only planning for it to be a mini one depending on what you can do with free agency next year. Sam Mitchell is a massive loss (Lewis much less so) to a playing list that was already on the decline and I wouldn't expect T Mitchell or O'Meara to be able to replace that impact immediately (i.e. in 2017)

"Where is Tom Mitchell At?"

Just setting up for a BigFooty thread in 2017.

Really? Please explain?
That's what I find weird. Our new guns are replacing our old ones.

That said there is an argument that losing Lake, Hill and Hale over two years will be hard for us - and Gibbo, Hodge and Burgers aren't getting younger

A lot hinges on youth. This is the most "interesting/uncertain" year for a while for us - which I'm actually really looking forward to. Hoping for some good news for our younger players and their development.

The biggest "development" might be the game plan too

I'm personally sick of the Jade naysayers but I'm also not overly fond of posters suggesting that we will kick ass next year.

We were at times a middle of the road side this year and yet finishing 3rd after H&A only goes to show just how amazing this core group of players have been over the recent years. And also just how much of a visionary Clarkson can be as a strategist implementing a game plan that allowed us to win games without a big target or winning the contested ball - (both things having since been addressed as well as you could reasonably expect in the off season to date).

Sure, we got knocked out in straight sets. But the QF was only lost by a kick after the siren going a few degrees off target, and the SF was a loss to a rampaging, young team who went on to win the flag. No team that has gone out in straight sets has ever lost to the eventual premiers in the SF. There's no shame in it. And in a different universe where Smith kicks the goal maybe the extra rest gets us through the PF and our experience gets us that 4th straight flag.

I don't necessarily subscribe to the assessment of many on Big Footy that we weren't as good as our H&A finish suggested. With those people pointing to our lower percentage and straight sets exit as evidence. Yet our lower percentage was in part brought about by a tougher fixture and a lack of a big forward target. And again, ultimately that percentage was still better than the team that knocked us out of the finals before going on to win the flag.

And obviously there's been a lot of big changes to our list going into 2017. It's difficult to predict whether the addition of T.Mitchell, O'Meara, Henderson and Vickery, along with the improvement of our younger players will outweigh the loss of S.Mitchell, Lewis, Hill and Fitzpatrick, along with the expected decline of our older players.

So essentially I think you're right about the gameplan having the biggest say for our 2017 chances. But I don't think we've got all those pieces of the puzzle in place just yet to be challenging for a flag. I'm expecting a rather similar season to this year again but just not with so many close ones falling our way again. Hopefully with performances from our new recruits that justify each of their respective costs to us, as well as greater improvement from our youth than what we see in decline from our veterans.

So even though next season might throw up worse results than this season we should still at least be seeing 2017 from a perspective of hope for what is coming in the future rather than the frustration of what we were losing in 2016.

tl;dr: We're probably going to be a bit worse off in 2017 but things should look positive for the future as we're in good hands.

Our list is okay at the moment. Losing Mitchell sucks but hopefully in 2017 both Heeney and Mills will be spending a lot more time in the midfield and they are both quality players.

Our forward line, well that is sort of hard to read but if we can get Reid back then along with Buddy and Papley it will be okay. Losing XR does not help though as he was proving himself to be handy up forward and a pretty good mark around the ground.

Defence, again hard to tell. Grundy has another few years in him and if he continues to improve I am very happy with Aliir. Rampe is good as well though he is more suited as a third tall. Swans fans are hoping to draft Grifin Logue at pick 9 as he is the best key defender in the draft and he would suit our needs perfectly and set up our defence for the next decade.

In terms of ruck, Naismith has proven his worth as a very good tap ruckman, best tap ruckman the Swans have had since Jolly, and Tippett, well if he can find form he is very good, but truth be told he was shite in the last few months of the 2016 season.

Where the Swans lack though is speed as we are quite a slow team and footskills as well as our midfield is the biggest kick and hope team in the league.
