Player Watch Welcome to Port Adelaide Pick #15 (2024) - Joe Berry

Obviously nowhere near enough footage to get a clear idea of how good he will be but my early observations from the footage:

*Very well balanced
*Nice balanced kicking style, weights the ball well, gets ball on boot effortlessly
*Has foot speed
*Works hard, chases & tackles but needs to improve preventing opp from moving the ball on during tackle
*A few times looked a bit fumbly trying to pick up the low ball, didn't get low enuf imo

That's my 2c worth

So is Berry going to be the kid we bag the club for drafting until he shows he’s a good selection and then we start talking him up as a Robbie Gray pick ?

Yes, for me rightly or wrongly, he has to be our most under pressure pick we've had since Boak just because currently the Houston trade is considered one of the worst trades ever in footy.

I'd like to see some elite small forward vision of him snapping some miracle goals or twisting and turning in tight to create scores. Those are the small forward traits we need. There's a lot of Farrell in his clips so far. Outside player with polish, but probably more a high half forward/wing in modern times. Hanging to see a highlights vid from the club.

Currently looking like.

Port OUT: Houston, Future 1st, Pick 39 (Gobbled up in Leo Lombard Pick swap), Pick 58 (currently 53)

Port IN: Lukosius, Berry, Richards, Atkins, Pick 33, Pick 38

Pick 45 came in and went out, so basically doesn't need to be noted.

If he's a capable midfield rotation as it seems then this is a pretty good pick.

Seems to have pretty good hands and good acceleration and evasiveness from the stoppages. Obviously it's a highlights package but seems to react quickly when the ball hits the deck. Knows where the goals are. Qualities that would no doubt have gotten Robbie and Zak interested.

And Richards.

I don't see that Richards has the runs on the board to be best 22 at this stage. Maybe he'll have a big preseason and force his way in.

Reckon DBJ will go back, either to BP (heaven forbid) or even wing. Either that or we’ll try Richards on a wing.
I was being told (in the #sackhinkley thread) that DBJ was our most important small forward now, and how he led the team in goal assist and score involvements or some shit. Now he's first on the chopping block 🤷‍♂️

Next year we add SPP and Berry to that forward line and perhaps Richards if he’s as good as our coaches think he is. I suspect DBJ starts the year in the side up forward as he clearly had a pretty strong 2024, but I don’t know that he stays in front of Berry and Richards all season.

Hes not a capable mid rotation at this stage.

Hes a Monfries type. Crafty, can play as a marking deep forward or high half forward link.

He’s quick hand to foot which I love in a small. Underrated skill.

If he can force his way into our best 23 alongside SPP, Luko and Richards we will be a much changed front half from last season.
Yeh his hand to foot transition is smooth & quick. My concern from highlights (only seen these so obviously a superficial judgement) is his ability to win contested ball. Loves to tackle though.

Happy to be wrong but unless Joe Berry is genuine Robbie Gray quality ( which is probably unlikely), I have a feeling both WA clubs maye have conned us to give up picks 16 and 45 to move up 1 slot for Berry, and letting them get what they wanted in Bo Allen and Murphy Reid with the next two picks after us, and I suspect we could be rueing not selection specifically Reid within a few short seasons, because I believe with his footy IQ he will be a gun.

As others have already suggested Berry has to be ready to go from round one, McEntee should have been delisted, Anastopuoplos will probably fall by the weighside after looking promising at times last season, and it's hard now to see why we even bothered to trade for Richards from the wobblers in the first place, and let's not forget kern's penchant for expecting undersized forwards to continually attempt to body up one out against defenders at least 10 kegs heavier and 10 centre metres taller when the ball is regularly kicked in too high.

Any danger of a positive thought?

Angus Monfries pick 14 in 2004 played 211 AFL games would currently be our best small/medium forward aside from Rioli and probably more consistent.
Yes, when Injury free Steve Salopek and Brett Montgomery were the next two players taken, Gus Monfries is a bit Mehh…

When you overpay for a guy who plays a bit like Robbie Gray because you wasted the opportunities you had when you actually had Robbie Gray.

That being said, look forward to seeing Berry kick at least 50 goals next year or he’s a bust.

Didn't like the way he played when he was at Port. A player that divided supporters opinions. As a footballer not within cooee of Rioli.
