funny how a lot of Swannies seem to be upset over this trade.

why is that? ;)

No, Swans fans were upset when it seemed we were making a straight swap of LJ for Armstrong.
Once it became known we were getting picks to use for Walsh...
ie LJ for Walsh and Armstrong, we became a very happy bunch of campers.
But hey, as with most things....time will tell.

Not sure if It's been posted somewhere else, but in the paper this morning there was an interview with Noble. He said we needed a third tall to replace Gunston and a tall backman to replace Davis heading into trade week.
He said we recruited Johnston as the Davis replacement and Lynch as the Gunston replacement. Just found it interesting as I would have thought it would be the other way round.
Has Johnston played much backline since he was drafted or is it just our intention to convert him to a backman. Or did Rucci just get his quotes ass about?

Johnston was playing in the backlines this season in the reserves I believe. But so was Lynch. I would have thought Johnston was the natural Gunston replacement to be honest.

I think they were both recruited for their versatility and we could easily see both players playing at either ends.

I think both will be tried at either ends in the Pre-season and whoever performs best will have first shot at that particular position.

What I like about Johnston in defnece is his marking ability, would love to see him develop into a harry taylor type in defence.

All I know for sure is that there will be SERIOUS competition for spots all over the ground.

I have this incredible dream, that one day, someone will become a gun in one position, and not worry about being versatile.

Completely agree with hendo8888, I thought the same thing when I read the paper.

Johnston played in defence in his second game against Collingwood. Apart from one glaring error which may have cost us the game which we lost by 6 points, he acquitted himself well and was solid. Surprised he was dropped for the next game, might have been through injury.

Yes LJ played in defence for most of the year and acquitted himself pretty well. His spoiling improved considerably as the season went on but you must keep in mind that the Swans dominated most of the NEAFL season and there were plenty of weeks where the ball was in our forward half for most of the game and the defenders had less work to do. He did like to sneak forward and have the ocassional pot shot from beyond 50.

Unless he bulks up during the offseason I'm doubtful whether LJ could hold down FB or CHB playing on a gorilla forward as he wouldn't win most wrestling contests with them. Third defensive tall perhaps, and with his kicking could prove to be an exciting, attacking defender.

Have loved reading this thread and all the expectations of the crows and swans fans.

The reality is having watched Johnston play CHB in the NEAFL all season he would not be in the crows best 22. Not even close, you are better than that.

So the crows traded him for Armstrong and 35 (lynch), again neither would be in the swans best 22 on current form.

So both clubs have traded for future potential. I seriously hope Johnston makes it he is a genuinely nice young man. But having followed him closely I think most likely not. Way too much baggage.

On the swans side Armstrong looks to have as much baggage as Johnston and Walsh... Who would know.

Happy to wait 2 years, no make that 5 years to look back and then make a call.

Adelaide supporters have traded in a lot of potential. But there a a lot of extras that come with it.

Wort pick 35 though.

I wonder how much of the baggage is caused by not fitting in to the Sydney lifestyle. He made a point of friends and family.

No we aren't

The NEAFL is about the same as SANFL 2nds. And he played at CHB because he wasn't good enough to play at CHF.

I heard your coach say on TWR that he would be a 3rd tall defender. I was glad to hear that because he is much more suited to that. He didn't work hard enough to get to contests as a CHF. Much easier in the back line when the contest comes to you.

He hasn't lost any of his kicking skills which are sublime.

I would love to see him used a kick ins after a behind. I have seen him clear the zone many times still with great accuracy.

To get some relative perspective on one aspect of unfulfilled potential,
Lewis Johnston was a bottom age draftee and is actually younger than McKernan (6 mths) and Luke Thompson (1 mth) and only 4 mths older than Port's Butcher.

Hopefully coming back to his home environment will help Johnston develop his full potential especially with our new development staff & approach.

We feel the same about Armstrong. Was lucky to get offered a contract at years end and then tells us he wants to leave. Very much a fringe player here.

Trade was one fringe with potential player + pick 35 (meaningless in a shallow draft) for another fringe player with potential.
