Last year we had a core midfield group of Gaff, Yeo, Shuey, Redden, Masten, Sheed and Hutchings. These 7 never all played in the same game as our structure was to play 6 mids in our best 22 (7 forwards, 7 backs, 2 rucks and 6 mids) so at least one would miss due to injury or form.

At least 6 played in all but 3 games when Ainsworth filled in because by and large that core group stayed relatively healthy. We were fortunate in that regard as our midfield depth wasn’t great which is why we went mids with our first two picks in this years draft

Looking ahead to next year should two or more of that group get injured or drop off in form then the replacement comes from -
Achee
Ainsworth
Mallen
O’neill
Foley
Smith
Brayshaw

It’s not a deep list so if O’Neill can put some decent WAFL performances together he’d be right in the frame for a debut

Given how we use the hbf as a bit of a development role it would not surprise me in the event of injury to see say duggan/cole move to the midfield, and Nelson/O’Neill come in to play hbf.

You'd think and hope that Nelson would come in, as surely he's done his developing. I'm a fan of Nelson, but he needs to cement his spot this year, it's year 5 now.

Yep - second I the Brownlow 2011, and three time all Australian. I’d be stoked to get a Dal Santo clone with pick one, let alone pick 28.
Not to mention that was a year where 3 dual brownlow medallists polled below him and only polling behind the highest ever polled season by a player, dane Swan.

In 2010 there were comparisons drawn between Gaff and NDS. I think the trait that may link these players is their intelligence on the field; running to the right areas and making consistently efficient decisions to control transition. Also, they possess a desire to further improve their game sense and any deficiencies for the next decade +.

They might not bust through like Shuey or have the vision of Sam Mitchell, but they know how the long game is played and won.

Reckon XON might have more of a knack for the contest (at least at an earlier point in his career) than Gaff or NDS, though. Got to wait and see what senior footy looks like for him!
