Wellingham - Traded to West Coast

Eddie seems to think it's all about him and all about Collingwood. In his eyes if a player wants to join Collingwood they shouldn't have to give much but when a player wants to leave Collingwood they want the world.
How dare Eddie try and get the best deal for COLLINGWOOD the club he is the PRESIDENT of

shame on you shame shame shame

Should walk into the PSD and call Mr Chins bluff. Like spoiled kids, Collingwood just don't play nice.
I remember you speaking of Carlton playing it nicely driving up Cloke's price when they had no intention of getting him, according to you.
Playing it nicely versus not playing nice? Are both outcomes not meant to screw the other club?
Spoilt kids versus the Nasty kids?

West Coast should just get Wellingham to put a big price tag on his head for his first year to scare other clubs off and then take him through the draft for nothing like Collingwood did with Ball.

I'm sure Eddie won't mind.

LOL. I think the Pies have shown when they have players they really don't want, they're prepared to make reasonable deals. Required players though are worth the world and then some.

We're no different from any other club in reality. Paul Williams and Nick Davis were very much required players though- we spent pick #19 (F/S) and four years of development on Davis, received pick #21 in a crappy draft (2002) in return- couldn't do much about it.

Port (Stevens) and St Kilda (Ball) played hard-ball in similar situations- win some, lose some.

Truth be told, a player opting to leave Collingwood in his prime is not an altogether common occurance.

It makes me smile that that still bothers Saints fans. :)

Melbourne would take him in a heartbeat- they'd have more cap room than West Coast. Freo also pick before the Eagles- pretty much rules out that option.

Ehhh, Eddie is just setting the battlelines.

West Coast list manager has said the starting point will be similar to Ebert deal (2nd rounder).

Eddie wants the moon.

The clubs will agree on a first rounder.

All part of the negotiation game.

I actually like that Eddie (and Collingwood) is aggressive in negotiations. West Coast tend to take the "let's be fair" and deal in good faith approach which is fine but sometimes I wish we had an "Eddie".

Typical Collingwood, offered him a contract way way down the pecking order, but now he wants to leave he's a top liner.
His manager has said Collingwood's, Fremantle's and West Coast's offers were all pretty similar. What are you on about?

He wants to go home to WA. I think most people agree he is worth their first pick (17 or 18) but some West Coast supporters seem to think he is worth about the same as a bloke who doesn't get a game for them (Steven's).

Nah! Different kettle of fish. We weren't dicking over a player who wanted to move on. Furthermore, I don't think Carlton and Collingwood have much chance of a good trading relationship any time in the near future and rarely have had in the past, so what's the point.

No mate. The club was happy to move on both those players.

You're right about Port and the Saints though. How did that work out for them?

probably wont work this time around with GC, GWS and melbourne having plenty of cap room.

Yeah but Wellingham said he wants to go to West Coast, just like Ball said he wanted to go to Collingwood so no other clubs will bother to draft a player that doesn't want to go to them even if they can afford him.

Paul Williams was a win/win- we ended up with Jimmy Clement indirectly.. Freo on-traded the pick Sydney sent us for Williams as part of the Peter Bell deal with North. Nobody got screwed on that deal.

Davis was homesick for Sydney.. we had no intention of trading him, and given he wanted to go to Sydney it was a buyer's market. 2002 happened to be a rare year when the Swans didn't make the finals, so they had a good first round pick at #5 (earmarked for McVeigh). No way on earth we wanted to trade him for pick #21, which is what we ended up doing.

We have options re. Wellingham- Freo, Melbourne.. nobody thinks pick #39 is an equitable trade for Wellingham (and that includes WCE fans).

Don't get mad because St. Kilda and Ross Lyon believed Pick 21 was better than nothing for Luke Ball.

Pretty obvious I would have thought. Clubs reward players financially based on what they think they are worth. The offer Collingwood has in front of Wellingham suggests they don't think he is worth that much. However, now they he wants out, they seem to be re-assessing exactly how valuable he is. Can't have it both ways.

His manager has also said based on the offer from Collingwood, he would think they value him around a second round selection.

Considering we've been offered pick13 I think that a more accurate starting point rather then trying to compare him to a player. TBH I'm pretty happy with the Eagles first rounder, anything less forget it

Luckily our club doesn't treat our players like shit, and he wouldn't want to do that to the club. If that ever happened to a club, it would probably be karma ;)

His manager would say that though, wouldn't he?

West Coast's second round pick will be something like pick #38.. that's not equitable to a 100-game premiership player being offered 300 to 400k a year, any recruiter will tell you that.

last time i heard tim harrington from melbourne indicated that they are deadly keen on recruiting both wellingham and Dawes.

It surely wasn't just a straight swap for pick 13. Would have thought Collingwood would have to at least throw in a late 2nd rounder with Wellingham for that.

who knows, but from what ive heard the top 15 in this years draft is quite good. so maybe its worthwhile even losing the 2nd rounder to get into the top 15. u have to ask hine about that one
