I still don't know how we made a gf, We have just played out of our skin all season. We have improved so damn much.

Simpson has been the difference. His gameplan has turned us around. The midfield is now more than the sum of its parts whereas in seasons past it was less. And he's managed to get the best out of guys like Wellingham, Sheppard, McGovern and Schofield in that patched up defence. Remarkable when you consider how important Mackenzie has been in recent years. When he did his knee, I thought the season was shot.

Agree. But I am making the point that a core group of reliable middle agers is the key. Of course you have good players who are old and young. But to go through a season and finish top 2 and then win finals you need a core group at their peak. Every side in the comp has individual brilliance. To win a flag you need a core bunch of reliable blokes at the top of their game who get the job done week in week out. Every side has a few stars. But stars dont win you flags.

What happened when they played freo? Absolutely mauled and only let back in at the end because freo took the foot off, clear as day. Get back to me when they beat hawthorn and sydney. And to a lesser extent, collingwood, north, adeliade, richmond at the opponents home ground. This has to be one of the all time soft draws in afl history so you would expect a solid start. So lets see what happens when they actually play some teams hmmm

What I like about West Coast is they have a solid average and median of games played with the 22 they send out every week. This doesn't always equate to success but it's a good start. Below are some tables I made to consider.
