What’s up with Cripps?

I kind of object to this thread being bumped the week after we play St Kilda. There's a complete failure to acknowledge that Jack Steele has beaten Cripps pretty tidily every time they've played against each other.

An opposition player is allowed to have the wood over you. It's on him to respond to that.
Cripps had 31, 8 clearances and 9 score involvements.
I don't think he was beaten.

It's been the similar pattern for most of his seasons other than 2019. Starts off fit, amongst the games elite. Gets battered up as the season gets about a third of the way through, and grits the teeth from there. Still a big contributor, but you can forget the Brownlow.

Massive influence over the game, though?
He was probably our best player. As a team, we were down, and yet still generated the shots at goal to win comfortably.
Despite St Kilda playing well, the reasons we lost were 1. Not converting 2. Some terrible unforced turnovers which resulted in St Kilda goals 3. All the other reasons.

If the rest of our team played to a similar level compared to their ability, we would have won easily.

Yep he WAS our best player...by a mile. He and Saad looked liked one of a few that gave a damn about the outcome. I actually thought he would get umpire votes as well.

It's amazing how often our perceptions of a players performance are shaped by the result. In the last quarter when Cripps won the first 3 centre clearances and helped us get back in front I thought he probably gets the 3 votes if we win. Because we lose he is suddenly non impactful.

Don't get me wrong I agree he has dropped off and had some quiet games lately but he played well on Friday by every statistical measure.

The biggest issue for Cripps is Pittonet missing.
This. Tdks follow up game is especially weak. Ryder taught him a lesson on the weekend. Especially on applying shepherds and protecting your midfield. Cripps had someone attached to his back the whole game without any help from TDK smacking himself into the saints dude. Been the same every week since pitto went down.

Cripps was bog. All the votes in the media went to Sinclair. Had 4 score involvements in the 1 st quarter and 1 after that. A team kicks 18 points the opposition play maker is going to rack up big numbers. Sinclair wasn’t the reason they won.

Get Pittonet back and a healthier backline and it'll enable Cripps to take the game on like he did prior to the injury crisis.

Don't underestimate what the back half injury crisis has done to our midfield. They're abundantly aware that if they screw up the backline hasn't got the size or the experience currently to withstand a heap of pressure. This has forced every player both back and mid to take on additional responsibilities.

You'll also notice that the mosquito fleet have dropped off on the attacking front as a result and are forced to play with not quite the same level of aggression they were able to earlier in the year.

Weiters and Pittonet will change everything.
I don’t see it this way.

Pitto and midfield getting back to their best is where it’s at. If they dominate we should still win. Best form of defence is offence.

Being offensive minded is all well and good when you have a strong backline that can act as a safety net. When it's not there it changes things.

Against really hard match ups and finals types games I agree but against saints last Friday night it was different.

Overall our game against saints came down to us being inefficient. As Vossy explained that’s goal kicking efficiency and ball movement efficiency....two areas we were poor at.

We also had 3 costly mistakes by LOB Cerra and Newnes that resulted in them scoring.

So even with our depleted backline we win that game hands down if we didn’t turn over as much and kicked a little more efficiently.

Needs a mentor. Said it before, but he should work with Cotchin. Maybe call Brett Kirk or could hope for Selwood. How to build culture, maintain standards, and the difference between leading and being the star.

I'd be thinking of relieving him of the captaincy and allowing him to focus on his own game. Many years ago we appointed Wayne Johnston as Captain, it killed his personal game, he was trying too hard, and it just wasn't for him. The next season they took the burden of captaincy from him and he was back to being a dominant force in the team.

Needs to shift his mindset from trying to be the best player on the ground, to being the best player for the team.
I like this as a focus for him.

Don't focus on being the best player in the comp; focus on being the best player in the moment. What that means and what that looks like is radically different; being the best player in the comp is all about getting the ball 35 times with 28 contested, breaking tackles, kicking goals yourself after breaking clear of congestion. Being the best player in the moment is recognising when it's your turn to block or your turn to go, recognising when someone else in a better position or is a better candidate to go for or receive the ball and dragging opposition away.

Cripps could be a genuinely terrifying dummy full forward if only he were willing to lead a) dangerously occasionally, and b) used the added attention after he got dangerous to drag extra numbers to him when he sought to create leading lanes for Harry/Charlie. He could be the best offensive/defensive stoppage mid if only he learned to lay blocks for others in there or our stoppage coaches developed an alternative to 'Pitto, tap down to Cripps'. He could play a Max Gawn kick behind if only he (or the coaches) were willing to allow others to play around the ball.

They need to stop trying to reimagine him as Dustin Martin, and start imagining him as Adam Goodes.

I'd like us to play Kennedy up forward and rotate him with Cripps to mix things up a bit.

Injury or not I loathe how we are using our mids.
