Interesting that we're having all these raves about young players and Chapman isn't even in the conversation (obviously he didn't play) but some here I know rate him as our best prospect.

And Erasmus still can't get a game. Hopefully the dam was has burst in terms of getting the kids in.

And who would have thought it would be normal by Round 5 that we don't even think about Fyfe as an out anymore as he's more or less finished in some of our minds at least.

Ras should play as sub to remind JOM and Brodie that they aren't irreplaceable. Hopefully Ras replaces JOM anyway come years end.

Just finished watching the 2nd half after listening to the 1st half on the radio earlier today. About to go back and read this thread, but before my thoughts get influenced by others, there's three main things that jumped out at me (bearing in mind I haven't seen the first half which didn't sound great on the radio).

1. There was a concerted effort to create run from behind the ball and move it quickly with overlap. This makes me lean towards believing JLo when he says the players weren't playing how the coaches wanted them to with that slow chip rubbish. It's still the coach's job to get the players playing how they want of course, but a temporary malfunction in that is a much lesser evil than thinking the coach actually wanted us playing that rubbish we saw earlier this year.

2. Will Brodie is one of the most important players on our list. When he's firing it completely changes the dynamic and overall effectiveness of our midfield. We saw that last year, we saw it again when he was out of form in the first couple of weeks, and we saw it again tonight when he was suddenly back to 2022 form.

3. The amount of kicks to nice leads inside the 'V' I50 really jumped out at me. Tabs has forged a great career from the rookie list but the last few years I've been more and more convinced that his lack of natural forward smarts has been a big part of our I50 problems. He's a commanding presence but unfortunately his two main moves are the lead to deep in the pocket, and the stand still and motion for the player to kick it on his head from 70m away.

It might be confirmation bias on my behalf, but without him up there we suddenly looked so much more dynamic. Amiss has so many more strings to his bow with different leading patterns and the ability to continue to influence the play once the ball hits the ground. Not to mention better ability to link up with teammates when he needs to move it on after a mark. We're going to be so much better off pumping games into him rather than going back to the one-dimensional Tabs well.

Next round. Honestly. Ras should be getting games and standard 15-20 disposals. If JOM is averaging that, Erasmus can match that and do better.

A win again. Not as dominant as I would have liked, but winning a game from behind like this was a good show of character.

Season looks very close, so some hope for this season. Just need to win more of these games.

Schultz, Amiss, Jackson among our best. A lot of hope for our future forwardline as well.

Something is definitely up with him. One memerable moment was at one point about 50m from goals he went to get the ground ball and was literally just pushed off it from the side and they ran away with it.

Another just outside centre square Serong was blocking so Brayshaw could pickup the ball and he just stood there, Serong got frustrated and picked it up but was already being tackled so the disposal was poor, just chucked it out.

He was there when needed in the last though and got some trademark desperation back but agree he hasn’t been at his best this year so far

My Buddy is NOD

Our goal kicking accuracy kept us in the game in the first half.

Schultz (my buddy) missing the gimme goal on the run seemed kill our momentum and if it wasn’t for a couple of beautiful goals by Jackson from the 50m line we may have fallen short.

Amiss, Jackson and even Sturt made our forward line look so much more dynamic, running to create space constantly and leaving their opponents in the dust.

Brodie should never be dropped again, does JOM have the tank to play on a wing? If not maybe HHF is his best position and the Hawks were right last year.

MJ is a ripper and needs to stay in the team.

Wagner showed nothing Wilson couldn’t do, not sure why they brought him in unless Willo was sore.

Our 1:1 defenders were very poor in the 1st half and didn’t read the wind/Lucosious kicking at all well. Adjusted at half time and played much better.

Serong and Darcy were immense in the second half, Darcy needs to do more just taking the ball out of the ruck, the mids connection hasn’t been there all year so there’s no point winning the hit out if the opposition mids are reading it better and getting the clearance anyway.

Walters is absolute class, if he’d started in the north game instead of being the sub, we’d be 3-2 now.

Darcy (in his radio post match interview) also pointed to the defence not moving the ball quickly in the first half.

I honestly believe that Longmuir has wanted the players to play more aggressively but I still wonder why they ran with Wilson over Walker for so many games when Walker is the one who actually attacks the lines (even Wagner was looking to play more aggressively, albeit didn't really execute very well last night)? Young and Chapman (before he was injured) have also been very conservative; given their strengths they should be trying to play much more aggressively.

I reckon there was a key moment half way through the 3rd quarter where Sturt took a mark just forward of centre and rather than go back and take his kick he immediately turned an waited for Amiss’ lead to develop. Possibly if Tabs was playing that kick might have to the top of the square.
I love Fyfe and I hope he returns at some stage this year but with him and Tabs missing it’s a great opportunity to have a look at a forward line with Amiss, Sturt and Treacy in it. Treacy had a shocker to start the year but he was possibly a victim of playing in a forward line where Tabs and Jackson were both trying to make an impression.

Great observations.

On run from half back, this is why I believe Wilson was dropped. Wagner wasn’t great but Wilson has not been doing what is necessary for a line breaking half back and doesn’t offer much defensively either.

One other thing Amiss has that Taberner lacks is agility. That’s a big part of why Taberner’s forward patterns are so one dimensional, he can’t turn easily.

How can we stop spread gold Coast had in the first half?
Was it effort or lack of speed?
At the game you could see the gold coast players working harder, providing easy marks short or on the switch, and we wouldn't go with them.

Effort you can fix. Lack of speed is harder.

Watched the game and then watched the 2nd half again to get my head around what happened. For most of the 1st half they doubled our scoring shots.
While Serong and Walters were magnificent all day, it was Darcy and Brodie that lifted, plus the brilliant forward play by Amiss TO ACTUALLY LEAD TOWARDS THE BALL CARRIER. 1st time since Pav we've had a deep forward leading to the ball. I wouldn't make too many forced changes. Sturt and Wagner both need 3 games consecutively to have a run at it. Wagner had a 3/10 game but still felt better than Henry. Sturts playing the hardest position on the ground, if he can get 8 touches and 2 goals he's done his job.
But it was Darcy's growing presence around the ground that set up everything. Taking marks, taking control around the ground was fantastic to see.
GC have so much talent, they'll have their day soon.
A good win against pretty good opposition. We definitely want to find a way to play 4 quarters of that football as opposed to a half. We'll take the win and move on.

It was Wagner but agree 100%

Watched the 2nd half last night & agree there was definitely a concerted effort to move the ball on quicker with at least a player running by out of the back half from a mark or free.

This quicker action allowed spaces to remain open further up the field to hit a secondary kick or put it into space to our advantage. The slow movement of the first half & earlier games just allows opposition zones to set up & cause the bomb down the line that didn’t happen as often in the 2nd half.

The other point was the ground size, we were made to use the corridor & our forwards were made to lead into the dangerous space instead of looking & leading wider. Some good lessons last night.

Finally, even though we lost the free kick count, apart from a couple of errors, I thought the umpires did a very good job & Eleni umpired very very well.

I liked Darcy clearing the congestion with taps and better yet grabbing possession. Often his dinky taps to a bloke at his bootlaces doesn’t create a clean clearance, so moving the ball forward at all costs opened the game up for us.

I accidentally called him Sandi at one point!

This was massive. Looked like a new strategy to tap the ball clear of the congestion, rather than just drop it down where it can be sharked by an opposition player. Finally.

I think you'll find that our defenders lifted in the second half too. Cox, Ryan, Young and Clark were very well held in the first half but they fought through it and got on top.

1st half Gold Coast played like we should. Took the first free option as soon as it presented itself. Moved fast, direct, and importantly lead at the ball. 2nd half we did. There are some horrid sequences of play where just no one is moving, and we either have to pump it long moving it out of defence, or kick to a pack going forward.

In the first half, especially the first quarter, the mids also just sprayed it forwards without thought.

Amiss and Sturt, even though the latter didn't have a great game, lead hard at the ball. Even if you're not used it creates so much space. Our forward line has just not done that regularly. Keep them both please, and if Jackson can build on that as a CHF... sorry Tabs but at this point I think he actively hinders our forward line.

Johnson, Brodie must play. Erasmus next please.

Brayshaw honestly has been out of form, Young too. Both were potato in the first half. You clearly just back them to turn it around and play with more consistency but that's a big part of when we look good or not I think.

It was a gutsy win. We fought and ran it out, the forward line looked much better WITHOUT Tabs there, it has to be said. No way he pings that ball into Amiss like Sturt did I think it was in the 3rd (??). There was something there, an early work in progress, but for me a glimpse into the future of what we hopefully will see....Amiss with his best game to date really felt like he was in a confidence zone of sorts, Walters unbelievable, imperious....Schultz is such a brilliant, never say never diehard character. He is always in the fight and often many times, once he gets in the 50 positions himself well for a small target. Aish is doing some mental gymnastics in the mid, he's been really busy there this year but he's holding his own...Serong: just a marvel. ...felt like early doors Andy was just getting knocked around too easy, but credit where it's due he fought and I was really happy he scored that goal....the 'little things' all help. I thought Banfield was neat, he isn't the squib we often portray him to be; he was involved in some important passages of play, like Andy's goal and his own.

At the end of the day, you have to give credit where it's due!

Wagner had (mostly) a shocker of a debut but he was a symptom of what Freo has 'been' and is hopefully about to overcome, we started off a lot like what we've been for 4 rounds bar the Derby (and even then we weren't anywhere close to our best..), but by the 2nd half we saw glimpses of Freo 2022 and we really started to lift as the game tired players off both sides, we found a way to dig a little deeper; Brodie's hands had a lot to do with it, he really cracked in. Darcy and Jackson too, the big titans got involved and I enjoyed Jacko's goals....noiceeee!
Enjoyable victory in the end, tough and well fought out, but I hope we can get back on a plane and bring the heat to the Bulldogs, back to back wins will REALLY life this group up moving forward and square the ledger at 3-3 and suddenly it isn't as disastrous looking when you see Richmond and even reigning Prems Geelong struggling with their own form. Booooyaaaaaaa!! :D
