Not sure what has happened to Heritage round. I used to enjoy seeing all the clubs wear a different jumper for a week, instead of each club wearing the same 1 or 2 jumpers every week. I also liked learning about each club's heritage. Does anyone know why there is no Heritage round anymore? I'd love to see it back.

Money issue as always... jumper sales were not as high as expected from the limited supply that was made available. Some clubs decided to just not participate.

Due to their short histories, it made jumper selections limited for the WA and SA sides. There were some interesting selections... West Coast, when asked to don a 70s jumper, despite the club had not yet existed yet, went with a 70s WA jumper which sparked controversy. Freo used old WAFL South Freo or East Freo jumpers... which are part of the heritage of the club, yes, but they were still technically not Dockers jumpers. Adelaide came up with some bogus Heritage logo that no one had ever seen before 2004 and slapped that on a SANFL inspired Crows jumper, even wearing the SA jumper itself one year. Eddie was having a sook about Port wearing the prison bars, but eventually they were allowed to wear it for a year or two.

I personally wouldn't mind seeing it again though. Throwback round. No theme, just let clubs wear whatever old jumper they want. Then again, what the heck would GC and GWS wear?

Freo have no heritage :D

Probably partly why they got rid of it.

Don't think it helped many clubs, including mine, weren't really bothering and wore not much different from normal or old state jumpers.

It'll be back years from now when the concept seems fresh and unique again.

It's been discussed on the Footy Jumpers before, and basically it came down to money. Anyway, here are my ideas for a potential heritage round.

Heritage Round Ideas for 2013:

All of these are pretty much spot on in regard to their correctness and accuracy, except for Geelong, where I've added some hoops to the red. All of them have 70's/80's style collars, because they are cool. There may be one or two errors in regards to sponsors and stuff, but whatevs.

Carlton (1909 monogram) v Collingwood (1976-80 home)

Port Adelaide (SANFL 1956. If Collingwood get all pissy, then maybe the 1997 first home jumper would suffice) v Adelaide (copy of their 2005 heritage. Would have preferred to have used a proper one, but they don't have much history to choose from. Not a dig at them, but they genuinely haven't changed guernsey since inception)

Essendon (VFA 1875 jumper. That's right, they haven't always worn black and red.) v Richmond (VFA 1902)

Brisbane (Fitzroy's first VFL jumper 1897) v Sydney (South Melbourne's first VFL jumper 1897)

For the record this is my favourite match up, due to both (sort of, don't get all technical) being relocated Vic teams wearing their very first jumpers, so it's essentially what Fitzroy and SM would have worn against each other)

Melbourne (1897 first VFL jumper) v Footscray (VFA 1898 - Footscray won the VFA Premiership in each year this was worn)

Gold Coast (Southport's jumper) v Greater Western Sydney (their TAC cup jumper in 2010)

Geelong (1859 jumper. Very old. Was actually plain red, but I decided to add some light hoops so that it wasn't dead boring. Also added a sublimated belt to the shorts lol) v Hawthorn (1933 home jumper. Could have put a monogram on there as well, maybe.)

Fremantle (first home jumper, 1995) v West Coast (first home jumper, 1987)

St Kilda (1919 jumper) v North Melbourne (1909 VFA jumper)

I think the other issue is that it would probably cause a bit of chaos with the fixturing. Since there are way more primarily black/navy/purple teams than 'other' colours, you'd either have to ask each team to come up with a clash heritage strip in case it was required, or you'd have to work out the matches and perhaps even tell each club what they had to wear.

It's a bit of a shame, as I think enough years have passed that Fremantle and Port Adelaide have a few options that they could use for a heritage guernsey, assuming Freo would be allowed to wear the anchor again, as a once-off.

Oh yeah, and for what it's worth, Port Adelaide are wearing the prison-bar design in R23 v Carlton.

A few teams have worn one-off heritage designs over the past couple of years. Brisbane v Essendon and Collingwood this year, Sydney v Melbourne last year.

There is a round for everything - umpires, ANZAC, multiculturalism, women, indigenous - I mean no disrespect to any group but where does this all end?

great memories of heritage round. as a kid hawthorn wearing blue and white completely did me over. plus there was that game where lloyd kicked 11 goals and i bought a skinny sashed heritage jumper to celebrate it.

I used to really enjoy it, unfortunately it's gone by the wayside now

AFL implemented themes following hawks wearing the blue red and white jumper

As a result, all the jumpers ended up being the same, as the themes don't date before the 70's (to avoid this happening again)
