Will you be mad if Brisbane win the flag and get the number one pick this year?

The 7 x top 25 picks are all from the academy. They wont be requesting trades home and leaving for peanuts just to get away.
Wait a second, are you counting next years draft-eligible players already? If so, there's a proverb, don't count your chickens before they've hatched. Those players could all drop in draft estimations over the next year.

2 x no 1 picks in 3 years for Brisbane.

7 x top 25 picks in 3 years for GCS.

If QLD arent winning all the flags over the next 6 or 8 years there is something wrong.

Brisbane are a battler club and are just trying to remain competitive. We don’t have hawkball like the Hawks do. No one talks about that.

Yes, 3 last year, 1 this year, expected 3 next year.

If it turns out that its only 2 in the top 25... it is still 1/3 of their starting 18 in a 3 year period.

Starting? You know players often take time to regularly make the best 22, let alone the starting 18, especially talls like Walter and Read? And not all players live up to their draft position.

No doubt this boy will be a star, but he coodabeen an even better banjo player:

I said 6 to 8 years.
I expect Brisbane to be ahead of GCS for the next couple of years. GCS should really be hitting their strides starting 2027.

If they still cant make a Prelim by then they just need to be folded.

More than 15 years of insane concessions.

Luck of the draw, as Lions got a father son.
QLD & NSW Academy concessions need to be reduced though. which they will be next year.
I think top 10 players should be excluded from academy bids.

So guys like Lombard could go anywhere.
outside top 10 anyone can match bid.
Maybe need to be 150+ afl games to match a top 10 bid on father son. which wouldn't have effected quality guys like Daicos, Darcy, Ashcroft anyway.

Funny how your first response in August 2022 is different to your most recent response from yesterday. Back in 2022 you seemed unbothered and it was just luck for the draw for Brisbane to land Will Ashcroft. Now it's a "massive leg up" that Levi Ashcroft happens to be a top 2 talent as well. Don't forget, the Lions also landed another F/S prospect with pick 12 two years ago and his name is Jaspa Fletcher. It's got to be the best run any club has ever had with the F/S rule.

Brisbane is either the luckiest club in the AFL or they are doing something that other clubs aren't when it comes to F/S prospects.
Yes it's funny how views can change in 2 years, it's almost as if things change and new circumstances come to light.

TBH I wasn't even really aware of the second Ashcroft, but the point remains, it is entirely luck of the draw ans entirely they will massively benefit from it. That's been a pretty consistent view.

F/s is a lottery all teams can buy tickets in and Levi could have come into the Lions who had won the spoon and folks would equally have complained that Brisbane was getting picks 1 and 2 (irrespective of whether the spoon runner-up would have picked him anyway) so your first line is more of a query about how folks feel about the F/s system in general (which I believe might have a thread or three covering it).
General consensus is Levi Ashcroft would go pick one if available for anyone to draft, very similar to Tom Hawkins in 2006.
Considering how many others are in the running for the top spot, including some articles that don't even mentioned Levi as an option in the top six players in the draft etc pretty sure that 'universally regarded' is a tad hyperbollic perhaps your case would have been better presented with 'widely regarded as one of the top picks in the national draft' which would have the value of being a truthful statement...
Similar to how people said Hawkins, Gibbs and Gumbleton were top 3 in the 2006 draft.
Not sure how Brisbane using a above-board, League endorsed, pathway to grow the game designed to mitigate structural disadvantages counts as a 'rort' ... although I get the concept it is used on our board as well (albeit with a different tenor)
I don't understand how so many fans of this sport accept the governing body giving leg ups to certain clubs, under the guise of 'growing the game' would this be accepted in any other professional sport?
Anyone who can't see that NSW and QLD clubs receive significant leg ups over the rest of the competition are either blind or in denial.
Btw is there any particualr reason why a Geelong surporter would be / should be touchy about the concept of a club having a 'rort' at this time ...
Not unless you think playing more games in Geelong (fancy that, Geelong playing games in Geelong) is a rort, or paying pick 17 for a player with known substance abuse issues and coming off an ACL injury is a rort.

Brisbane are only taking advantage of a system that has been in play for too long with silly rules.

Easy solution to F/S, NGA and Northern Academies.
  • Remove points value on picks (pointless nonsense)
  • Any Bid on one of the above must utilise at least 1 pick within 10 places of said bid
eg. Levi Ashcroft gets bid on at Pick 2 by Lions, they must produce a Draft Pick from Pick 2 - Pick 11 to match
eg. Kako gets bid on at say Pick 10, it is up to Dons to produce a pick from Pick 10 - Pick 19 to match.
eg. Lombard gets bid on at say Pick 14, it is up to Suns to produce a pick from Pick 14 - Pick 23 to match.

It would reduce a bunch of silly points trades and actually make teams pay fair value to move up.

In saying that, Lions are doing nothing wrong. They are using the system provided to them.
Well played.
