Or during - sorry there is truth in that. He was given leeway due to his breakup and troubles i believe.

I remember talking about it with my mates when he got dropped and wasn't dominating in the VFL if he was going to get back. Apart from a purple patch vs Hawthorn he was largely ineffective in the finals. Crucial goal in the GF .
With the benefit of hindsight he was lucky to be in the side.
Will be interesting to see what the Bombers do when his form drops away.

Yet again the AFL website getting basic information horribly wrong. Who checks the facts over there?

"Did you know? For such a popular number, club great Rohan Smith is the only Bulldog to play over 100 games in the No.5 jumper. Smith wore it 254 times, with the recently retired Matthew Boyd's 86 games the next best out of the 23 Dogs who wore it."

Matthew Boyd actually played 224 games in the number 5 jumper.

Brownlow medalist Peter Box also wore number 5.
So did player from the 40's Ian Bryant.
Both played over 100 games.

Ian Bryant was a defender in the 60s, but you're right, both he and Box played over 100 games wearing #5 (Bryant wore 37 at the start of his career). Also George Bennett, a tough full-back from Hawthorn, crossed to us in the early 30s, and played over 100 games in #5, before finishing up back at the Hawks.

It's not hard to do some research, especially when all the info is available online and easily accessible with a basic search, but the majority of "journalists" these days just don't seem to make the effort.

George Bennett was another to play more than 100 games in no. 5 as well.

Sorry Ivan, missprint meant 60's for Bryant

I was just looking on AFL Tables to have a look at the history of our number 5s and I've just got to the bottom of where the writer messed it up. He was looking at the goals column instead of the games! haha

The article claims Rohan Smith was the only 100+ game wearer with 254 games, which is his career goal tally, ditto the 86 for Matty Boyd in the article. What a **** up, clearly they throw these things together in a panic at the last minute lol

Which is flawed anyway given Smith played in number 31 in his first season for 14 games, 10 goals. Boyd also played his first 4 seasons with number 42. Just a complete mess of an article.

Pretty sure the guy who wrote it follows the Bulldogs too. How could he not twig that Boyd played more than 86 games in number 5 for a start? It's so recent. Incredibly lazy stuff.

Has there been a player of greater perseverance than Ron James. Debuted in 1930 and had to wait 58 years to play his 2nd game for the seniors.

Brownlow medalist Peter Box also wore number 5.
So did player from the 40's Ian Bryant.
Both played over 100 games.
Ian Bryant, who first played for Kingsville YMCA (in the Under 16s), and then Footscray 5ths (also in the Under 16s), played for Footscray seniors in the 1960s. I remember watching him play for Kingsville YMCA when he was 11 -- my brother also played for Kingsville YMCA.

Miss the old days of the FDL. Guys played juniors for their clubs and some moved up to seniors. There was less player movement.

Ronnie James played in the 1985 VFA GF for Williamstown at 14 years of age. That in itself is amazing.
Tragically killed in water skiing accident New year's day 1990 aged 19.

Geez didn't realise Bruce Reid played that many games, another 14 would have given us Sam and Ben.

Then again I wasn't that unhappy when he went to Carlton- was pretty ordinary for a guy who played that many games!

Don't think so B S - Ian Bryant played for F&Y Socials [the same club Peter Welsh and Ted Whitten Jnr, played for]. He had perhaps even finished his Bulldog days before Kingsville YMCA started up.
