Don't think so B S - Ian Bryant played for F&Y Socials [the same club Peter Welsh and Ted Whitten Jnr, played for]. He had perhaps even finished his Bulldog days before Kingsville YMCA started up.

Sorry, but I am 100% certain that Ian Bryant played for Kingsville YMCA in the 1950s. The YM certainly did exist then -- I went there. I lived in Footscray (near the Trocadero Theatre) and on the way to Under 16 matches we used to catch the bus to "Sam's Coffee Pot," on the corner of Somerville and Geelong Roads (I think). We would then walk to the ground. I watched the YM Under 16 Football team play many times, and Bryant was a star in it when he was 11. Later (between 1956 and 1959) I played for Footscray Technical School Old Boys (FTSOB) Under 16, then with the Under 17 team (even though I never, ever, was a student at Footscray Tech -- but my brother went to Footscray Tech). From memory, F & Y Socials also existed at that time. FTSOB played in the FDL Under 16, but the Under 17 team played in the Melbourne Boys League -- In 1959 I was actually picked in the Combined Melbourne Boys League which beat the Geelong Boys League Team on Kardinia Oval that year. In the Under 17 team we played against teams like "St. Kilda 4ths."

My apologies B St. - Ian 'Rat' Bryant did play for KYMCA U/16's in 1954 as a 12 yo - but only for the one year! Due to financial problems the KYMCA junior side was taken over by the Footscray & Yarraville Socials the following year. Ian continued on with the F & Y's U/16's and U/18's up until 1959 [he was promoted along with Terry O'Brien for his only Senior experience with the F & Y's to that year's winning GF side] He started with the Bulldogs the following year in the 3rds before working his way to senior selection later the same year. He became a fixure in the side from then on, playing on the wing in the 1961 GF. he finished with over 150 games in the RW&B, numerous Big V representations and an All Australian honour in 1966 :)

Ian Bryant iirc had a deadly drop kick They went a long way. He was a clearance weapon.
Correct. Bryant was a perennial performer in the World of Sport Champion Kick - could kick drops, torps and stab kicks all with aplomb. I wore his number 5 on my back for a few years! Loved Ian Bryant.

My memories of Ian Bryant are as a back pocket. IIRC he was one of the best in the VFL gaining state selection regularly but often missing out to one particular player whose name I can’t recall. Same situation occurred to Gordon Casey who kept missing out to a Saint. State selection was a highlight in those days given we didn’t make finals.

Gee

Geez didn't realise Bruce Reid played that many games, another 14 would have given us Sam and Ben.

Then again I wasn't that unhappy when he went to Carlton- was pretty ordinary for a guy who played that many games!
Bruce certainly liked to take the game on which resulted in some very comical stuff ups. Most of the time he went one of his runs, it came to no good.

Anyone else find it amusing that after Pendles injury in the international rules game yesterday, the media are now saying the future of the series is in doubt? I mean did they not think this could have happened before the series? That injuries could occur? Top shelf stuff from them again

I can imagine us being a club that's said no to letting players do it for that reason, otherwise I'm sure the likes of Bont, Stringer, JJ woulda been up the top of their lists.

On another note what are the players getting paid for this? Can imagine it would have to be a bit to get em to end their holidays early for it!

Interesting with the International Rules that Ireland have no representatives from Dublin who've won the last three All-Ireland Championships in a row and Australia have no representatives from either of the last two premiers.

I'm barracking for Ireland since I may or may not be an Irish citizen through my great great grandfather. I'll check that out before I run for Parliament.
