What They're Saying - The Bulldogs Media Thread - Part 4

If anyone wants to take a trip down memory lane and cry into their cornflakes while they listen to us blow our chances in 97/98 PF, then I will leave this here:

Forced myself to listen to this. I was only 14 but can still remember it clear as day. At half time people were leaving the ground to go line up for GF tickets.

You can tell Mark West’s miss to put us 8 points up with a minute and a half to go still stings Wallace.

I watch absolutely zero footy media now. Cancelled all news subscriptions and stopped using twitter. Never been happier.
It's a sad state of affairs. Today's media coverage detracts from my enjoyment of the game so, like you, I choose to shun it. All I want is a few stats and some informed or at least interesting analysis, a bit of genuine humour and none of the side show sh!t. The AFL ap gives me the stats and OG chimes in with good stuff relevant to us. Ok, there's the odd side show here but some good analysis also. In fact not just good, but good enough:)

Random post this but I just watched The Outsiders . Gotta love Terry Wheeler.

No wasted word and full of emotion, pride and encouragement.

Hope club uses him occasionally to talk to the group of players.

I watched Bounce last night, sometimes it’s funny, sometimes you can glean some sense out of it.

It finished with the best 5 goals of Bont, with a little side swipe that he has never won goal of the year.
How didn’t he win it in 2014 for that goal vs Melbourne? Just looked it up and Matt White won it, which admittedly was a great running goal, but he’s fast and did have a paddock ahead of him. Level of difficulty much harder with Bont’s and game situation also crucial.

Was Bont robbed of both a Rising Star and Goal of the Year in 2014?

All voted awards - including the Brownlow and the AA team - must have an asterisk. They are usually won by good players but that doesn't mean the winner was the most deserving, just that they garnered the most votes because their club had the most fans or because footy media hacks were entrusted with the voting. The media have even hijacked the brownlow and have effectively set the terms for which players deserve votes (ie midfielders). The umpires obligingly comply.

It doesn't leave a lot. Just the premiership medallion and the John Coleman Medal.

The 2014 RS was a shocker - the winner wasn't even that good a player at the time and is no longer on an AFL list. He played 107 games in 5 season and then another 17 games in the next four seasons, during which time he was traded to Sydney for pick 48. They delisted him at the end of last season.

Ignore.

Same as the RS winner Bont was runner up to,had a very mediocre career at two clubs. Is it because he plays for the Bulldogs? Collingwood, Carlton have won a couple, big clubs but so has Brisbane, trying to bolster up the Northern states, I really believe it is not so much rigged as biased.

There was debate at the time that Bont couldn't win it because he was only selected for 16 of the 22 games while other players. Normally that would be a factor if the best young players were contributing like Daicos or whatever, but it was such a weak year that the fact that Taylor played 6 additional games where he got 11 touches or whatever should have been disregarded.

Keep in mind that Bont was heavy favourite when the season ended... until David King campaigned heavily on Taylor. And then it was revealed that King stood to win thousands by betting on Taylor at various stages during and after the season. Man of integrity that he is I'm sure he didn't let that influence his job

There was even a strong rumour that there could have been a large bet involved, wasn’t there?

To me not winning in 2021 was even more egregious. Starts at the centre bounce, hits the pack at full speed running and ends up snapping on the wrong side. Amazing skill, class and finishing.

Serong's winning goal was real good, but really just boiled down to 'whack it on the boot and hope for the best'.

Kicking a goal during covid lockdown v kicking a goal in a derby in front of 60,000 people

On being a Tragician and the Danny-Boyd podcast

This week I was lucky enough to appear on the Danny Boyd podcast. This is a collaboration between comedian and staunch Bulldogs fan Danny McGinlay - the creator of the 2016 banners which were so hilarious and at the same time thought-provoking - and a tall young fella called Tom Boyd, who was, let's say, a contributor to the 2016 premiership. Ok, he probably should have won the Norm Smith medal for his performance!

I talked about why the blog got started - my attempts to understand why anyone would feel compelled every week over so many decades, to support their team through, as I've often joked, 'thin.' The importance of family, and that rich sense of western suburbs place, and the 1989 Fightback which is an under-rated turning point in not just our history, but the direction of the AFL competition from that time on. I hope you enjoy listening to it, after some initial nerves I loved our chat and the range of topics we ranged around.

Absolutely

No one other than the Bont could have kicked a goal like that in his first few games. White only won cause it was a public voted award and the Port Nufties bombard the votes

I remember the BS excuses from some in the media at the time about how many games Lewis played vs Bont which ignored the fact that Bont was injured early and Lewis was playing in a very average side

Good episode!

Good episode!

I loved how she talked up the fightback and agree that this is such a triumphant story that all supporters should know about (including McGinlay and Boyd, FFS!!)

In a 10:30 segment covering the teams in contention and where they are in this seasons premiership window

The Western Bulldogs literally warranted 12 words...before rushing off to the real contenders.

I presume that they then spent the rest of the program talking about Carlton's woes. Like every other sheep in ****ing AFLMedialand.

These are not serious people.

Its little wonder I hold the AFLMedia is such contempt.
