Essendon
Okay so there has been a lot of supporters who have complained that we made no trades. For these people what are the trades you would have done? What did Essendon miss out on? Are you slitting wrists because we didn't upgrade pick 55 to 40 because of Bradley. I'm genuinely interested in what people think Knights and co missed out on.

Please post all the trades you feel were possible yet the Essendon club missed out on. Make sure you include the club involved and what we give, and what we gain so not just "trade Dyson".

dude it is ****ing 2:45 in the morning

Haha I know, I'm still amazed at my ability to spell despite how many beers I am into the night. One thing I'll admit- Big Footy is a good time waster while desperately downing glasses of water in an attempt to sober up.

Still think pick 40 is not enough for Bradley. 2nd/early3rd would be my limit. I don't love the bloke but pick 40 is grossly unfair for us.

mate, 40 would have been sweet.

From what I read, we were ready to accept an upgrade of our 4th round pick to 40, ie Bradley and our 4th rounder for 40, but Freo still didnt play ball.

Why?

They will get him for nothing in the PSD - extremely unlikely anyone will take him before Freo do.

Bit like Brennan - Essendon are probably working out a way to get him in the PSD for nothing, and keep our first 2 picks, which was a priority. Hard to do deals when players are uncontracted and willing to walk to a certain club.

what probably cost us was North forcing us to use our third rounder for Daniher. If we could have packaged Bradley and/or Dyson with a 3rd rounder or similar, would have been much easier to offload them.

But as our first 3 picks were effectively off limits, it was hard.

Too hard to know exactly what trades could have been done, just that again, we've failed to move players such as M Johnson, Bradley, Dyson on and receive something for them. Very dissapointing, I don't believe these guys will contribute to our next phase of strength.

MJ for a late draft pick. Dyson for whatever we could get, Bradley for a player or mid - late draft pick.

Also would have been wrapped with Prismall for pick 23.

Real dissapointment is in Knights as he clearly believes we are better than what we are. When are we going to wake up? 13th, 15th and 12th. Three shocking years. We've got a great top 5 players, then we fall away terribly. Another chance to better our list just slipped away.

was Prismall ever on the market?

MJ, Dyson and Bradley were shopped around hard from all reports. Nobody wanted them. Freo knocked back Bradley for downgrading a pick - he obviously had no trade value in the market. Same for the other two.

There was nothing else to do, especially when we were hell bent on keeping our first 2 picks, which IMO was the smartest thing to do first a foremost.

id rather keep 23, and try to get him in the PSD for nothing (lets see how much he really wants to come to Windy Hill) than trading him for our 2nd pick (at best) and having effectively 1 pick in the draft.

Bradley is worth another year. The only trade that occured that i would have let him go in was the Judd one.

Dyson for Johnstone would have helped us. We need that level of skill in our midfield and i think the dees would have taken another kid at Dyson's level to play alongside Jones, McLean, Sylvia, Petterd, etc

The steal that StK got Schneider and Dempster for would have been good to trump. Schneider as our link up man in the middle would have added a fast attacking dimension to the midfield.

Brennan was not worth the risk.

Something for you to think about. Always look at the big picture. Next years draft will be stronger than this years draft. So you simply delist guys. No point taking players with late picks in this years draft and signing them for two years if you want spots for next season. That is why we tried to get first or second round picks. If we where going to take more players this year we wanted them to be early. We will be wanting to take 5 or 6 picks next year.
Now i dont agree with Dyson being signed for 2 years. I dont think they got that right but then how many sides get everything correct 100% of the time.
Yes i think we stuffed that one up.
We have a heap of young blokes who need to be played in 2008 , no need adding more junk to the pile with players late in this draft until you sort out what you have. Hislop,Houli,Lonergan,Hocking,Dempsey,Reimers,Monfries and Nash all have to be tried in the midfield. Will it make us a top 4 side next year ? No i wouldnt think so but you have play the young blokes at some stage.
You ask when are we going to wake up after finishing 13th,15th and 12th. Maybe we should be asking the same of you. You do know how much of the list we turned over in the last 3 years ? Its all very well say we should have been active in trade week but who are we trading ? without offering required players we where never going to be active.
As for Prismall he was never up for trade anyway. He didnt want to be traded and Geelong didnt want to trade him so i dont know why you keep harping on about it. You have to be realistic. You can only trade for blokes who are available.

im not complaining about the trades we didnt make although it would have been nice to get brennan... THe thing that baffled me was dyson being re-signed for two years... imo he should have been delisted.. he has been given enough opportunities (49 games) to show something and all he has shown is that he has potential that doesnt look like it will ever be reached. He doesnt seen to have any guts, and shy's away from the physical side of afl, we dont need dyson for his speed, we have enough young speedy guns at the momment, we need a hard at it midfeilder who is willing to get hurt for the team. I could understand one year contract even though i would still then be abit annoyed but two years? knights may have just made his first mistake.. I just hope he doesnt delist MJ or Bradley now because imo they both have alot mroe to offer then dyson.

thats you opinion I for one quite like Dyson and was happy he was given another go. At least try see what he can do under Knights.

I agree, can't belive we would have given him away for that (if they are not going to delist him) surely Knights would have been against that considering his form for BB.

But then again I have been hearing he wants to leave, (so maybe we will have to delist him, if that is the case) wouldn't have thought that he would want to with Sheeds leaving and Knights coming in though, unless he really wants to go home...

I'm not unhappy with how trade week unfolded for us. We shopped Bradley, MJ and Dyson around and ultimately didn't get an offer we felt was worthwhile.
Bradley for pick 40 would only have been acceptable if he was desperate to get home and we were trying to do the right thing by him. Fremantle in the end were only offering pick 56 - we wouldn't use that pick so we would effectivel have given Bradley away. I think he's still worth a go as a forward and hopefully he decides to stay. Worst case scenario - he walks to the PSD and we get nothing - the same as we would've in a trade.
MJ - if we don't want him at age 28-29, why would another club? His main value across his career has been his hardness at ball & man - unfortunately he now can't keep up with small forwards and is limited to brief midfield stints in heavy, locked down games and playing as a forward. Offer him a 1 year contract.
Dyson - would have been happy to trade him - but only if we were going to get something meaningful. The club took the decision to get rid of Sheedy partly because they felt that he wasn't the right person to develop our young players - and appointed Knights because they believed he was. So maybe Knights can get something out of Dyson - he certainly got talent. Personally I don't think he'll make it but I guess they would have looked at what pick was on the table and whether they felt there was a better option in the draft at that pick than Dyson. He wouldn't have signed a 1 year deal, so it had to be 2 years to counter Freo's 3 years. If we drafted someone with a pick in return for Dyson that would be 2 yr contract - so either way we're stuck for 2 years.
It's interesting that most of the interest in our players came from Fremantle - obviously Harvey has reasonable opinions of Bradley, Dyson, MJ.
I don't think there's anyone else who we would have traded. Our out of contract players - Peverill, Johns, Lee - wouldn't have excited any interest if the guys above didn't. Players still under contract who we might have traded - Hille, Laycock, McPhee are the only ones I can think of (JJ would have had no takers). If we trade Hille or Laycock we need then to trade for another ruckman to cover for injuries - so no real gain there.
In terms of the firesale type trades - King/Gardiner, Schneider/Dempster, Hadley. I wouldn't have given up 23 for Schneider/Dempster. Both good enough players but not part of a long term solution. King/Gardiner - no thanks. Hadley - if his knee holds up then absolute steal for pick 52. However there is no way Brisbane would have dealt that generously with us after Mal Michael - can't have it both ways.
Brennan - great if we get him in the PSD - wouldn't have traded 23 for him - too unreliable.

So (finally) in conclusion - I don't know that we could have done much more. Crucially we didn't give up our 1st 2 draft picks.

we kept our first 2 picks which was most important to me.
We have delisted cole which was imperative though unforgivable that we got him in the first place.
Giving Dyson 2 years is terrible. He was hardly in a position of power and if he really wanted to take freo's offer- Let him.
I hope we keep Bradley for a year and give him a chance forward.
I wouldnt keep MJ or Pev- time has gone for them.

Im happy we kept our first two picks weshould have however tried to get another midfielder its what we really need. That bloke Richmond picked up would have been ideal-Morton I think or someone a bit older maybe

I think we should've traded Bradley at pick 40 or even later. It would seem likely he will go into the PSD and we will received nothing in return, for a no. 6 draft pick that seems a waste.

Trading him for a 4th round or later is a waste as well . No point filling the list with too much junk from the bottom end of this years draft when next year has more depth.

For memory Hird was pick 72, Simon Black was also late. As for this year's draft, perhaps most of them are late bloomers, it just so happens that the '06 draft they were more advanced comparative to their age, maybe?

What would be your suggestions? How can we manage the list to our advantage and/or in preparation of next year's draft?
