The 'Goldfields league' actually should be the blueprint for VCFL football going forward.
The 'Goldfields' being one of 8 or 10 'super leagues' around the state with each having a elevation/relegation system based on the two best and worst performing teams over every two years.
The concept is excellent, gives clubs real incentive and would increase interest from spectators infinitely.
Feeder league clubs could also benefit as a salary cap could be instituted to take pressure off them financially.
Sixteen men on the field is also an excellent initiative for the feeder leagues, there are, or have been too many blokes playing well past Super rules age just to make up numbers.
No one could put their hand on their heart and honestly say that country footy is in great shape at the moment, this upsizing/downsizing is the future and should have been instituted ten years ago.
The only drawback seems to be the tyranny of distance and travel, a drawback that I think could be addressed by the VCFL's current association with VLine. A relative who is very involved in the VLine bus contracts process assures me that the bus companies are making 'squillions' on these deals. Being government contracts, and to the benefit of the community, surely it would not be too hard to bring some pressure for them to supply a couple of buses and drivers to each away team each week in a quid pro quo for sponsorship of the league? Who knows, they may just turn a handy profit if they also provided a service to 'paying' supporters.
It's win-win.

hairy did win, on like 122 votes, then came geary on 108, an maddern on like 103 or something. the system is every player is rated out of 10 for each game they play. so if you played every game, you'll get at least 18 votes. lol

What a shame that the folk down Gisborne way seem to think that a "change of scenery" is what they need every 10 years or so to keep their supporters interested. I imagine should Gisborne choose to join BalFL and resume some old rivalaries then crowds would be big as would the almighty dollar through gates, etc. But after the novelty has worn off, what then? There's a word for those who change partners so easily.

Sorry Dirk, you've got me confused with someone else ... been in the same relationship for quite a long time now without any hiccups. But let's get back to the real issue - does Gisborne need a change of scenery to keep it alive? All clubs have an off season or two but loyal supporters stay true regardless of the scoreboard or ladder. I don't think the crowds are so low at Gisborne games because the away teams don't travel, it has has much to do with the Gisborne people. What's the real story?

Yes, I was there and the crowd was good. The only problem with the spectacle is that Eaglehawk continued its hot and very cold season and copped a hiding at the hands of Flat. Should be different next Saturday night when South Bendigo take on Golden Square.
I'm about to head back to the QEO now and will be quite happy to give a report on the crowd later if that's what keeps bigfooty posters happy!
I attended the match last night and thought that it was a reasonable crowd considering the rain that pelted down before the start of the seniors. Grandstand was pretty much full and there were a few people over on the Aquatic centre wing shelter, and rotunda. Think the Satday night game worked well as I saw a lot of district supporters at the game - who wouldnt be there otherwise, if the match was held during the day.
On the match itself, Flat dominated preceedings after Qtr time, and to kick 20 goals in tricky and greasy conditions was a fair effort !

tried but unfortunately missed...think the weeks that the tribunal give him will hurt more than it will DuffTyler with Gisbornes form..
