Another interesting stat boys and girls was that 16 of the Freo players on the weekend were rookie listers, or pick 53 or deeper. So maybe first rounders and COLA aren't the be all.

Yeah but they have Ross Lyon the best coach in the competition.

Ross Lyon, Neil Craig, Rodney Eade and Terry Wallace (they have all reaches at least 2 preliminary finals as an AFL coach) all had the ability to develop a game plan that revolved around the defensive aspects of the game and could implement roles within teams for very low skilled players to become very successful players.

The common theme among those 4 coaches, none of them have won a grand final.

To take that next step and win a flag, you need star players. Not a well drilled team that can follow a set of instructions or a team that implements a defensive game plan. You need players that can win the game from there own boot.

As someone said above there was some interesting stats on Footy Classified last night showing number of first round picks in the last 4 flag teams. Most had 12, Sydney only the 6.

Thommo, Reilly, Dangerfield, Smith, Talia, Johnston, Crouch M, Dougie Crouch B and Kerridge as end of 1st rnd priority pick. 10 I can count

We clean up with rookie draft players on our list Jpod, Betts, Rutten, Porps Wright, Pets, Sauce, Jenkins probably more...

If pick 7 is the cut off point. I think a few miss out.

By my count we have 7
Smith - pick 14
Talia - pick 13
Lynch - pick 13
Dangerfield - pick 10
Douglas - pick 17
Reilly - pick 12
Thompson - pick 16

So, it looks like from that list we don't have any picks inside the top 7

THE AFL section on the Advertiser website is disgusting.
Might as well give Port the premiership already judging from some of the articles.

****ing hell, get off their dicks already! pathetic journalism.

B Crouch doesn't quite count - he was an U17 selection initially and we then traded a first round pick for him (or rather, entry into the minidraft where we took him), but he was never selected with a first round pick. Realistically though, that's what he is.

Was including Brad and Kerridge on their respective technicalities.

Personally I believe if we can get 2 x top 10 draft picks in 2014 and 2015 and trade in 2 quality players say a Gibbs type and another quality player over the same period we have the core for a genuine run at a premiership in 2016.

EDIT: Hard to believe we didn't trade aggressively last time our window was open - 2005-2007

Does this mean you think the Crows won't play finals for the next 2 years?

I think we will finish between 7-11 but IMO we need those top 10 picks and 2 quality players to have the core to be back in the game for 2016

I'm not so sure Walker would have been a top ten pick if not for the NSW Scholarship. He had a good year in 07, certainly, but he wasn't that widely talked about. You have to remember he spent the majority of it playing at Broken Hill.

Agree with this

From memory, in some mock drafts , they suggested he would go somewhere between pick 30 to 35. He was an All Australian under 18 player but not as a key forward, he was on a flank. He was never expected to be a leading full forward, he was expected to be a flanker like Scott Welsh

How the hell was Butcher drafted at 8. It goes to show how much footballing talent has been overshadowed by a players athletic ability over recent years.
It shows that the 'this many first rounders' thing isn't entirely reliable.

Port would trade Butcher for Tex in a heartbeat, but while improving their side, they would have 1 less first rounder.
