Where does Marcus Bontempelli sit in the players of this era

A quiet game for Bontempelli in the elimination final against Hawthorn: 18 possessions, 5 marks, 3 tackles, 8 clearances and 1 goal.

Remember, Finals Footy, whilst it's a short window (1 month = September) is when it truly matters.

13 Finals games now for The Bont: averages 22.6 possessions and 0.9 goals per game.

He isn't (yet) ahead of players like GAJ, Martin, Judd and Dangerfield. Finals footy is a different kettle of fish.

Still an awesome player though and he should poll well in this year's Brownlow medal count.

I thought while Nash did a great job on him if some of his team-mates hadn't made massive **** ups we would be talking about a 5m stretch where he kicked 2 goals and set up 2 more and pulled the dogs back into the game.

Why does afl more than any other sport have this view where one performance defines a players career?

The guy has been a champion over a decade including a premiership, was a great player across that campaign, was by an absolute stretch their best player in another grand final campaign and easily their best player in said grand final.

But no, because he had a quiet game in one final he’s getting criticised.

This.

Bontempelli came within a Naughton fingertip of getting two goals in the first 3 minutes of the 4th quarter.

At the opening of the fourth, the Doggies are 6.5 to Hawthorn 11.11. Bontempelli clears it from the centre and gets a quick goal.

Doggies 7.5.

Within two minutes, Bont is taking another shot on goal.

Had he got those two goals in three minutes, the Bulldogs would have closed the lead, with the scores at 8.5 to 11.11. The ball would end up in the centre square again, with the Doggies in momentum.

That's the kind of act by a club captain that can swing the momentum of a game and get a team to lift.

And 4 a goal deficit, with most of a quarter still to play is very doable for a team that has some momentum.

Unfortunately for the Dogs, that second shot on goal is touched on the line by Aaron Naughton.

Thanks to Naughton, what happened instead is the ball (after a couple of behinds to both teams) eventually ends up at the other end of the ground, where Ginnivan scores a goal.

The early momentum is lost.

So yeah, full credit to the Bont. There definitely were times where he nearly singlehandedly swung the momentum of the game, but was let down by his teammates.

September pretender.

He's certainly not like Mr September Luke Hodge or the GOAT in Dusty Martin.

The Bont goes missing far too often to be discussed in the same caliber of footballers like Hodge, Mitchell, Voss, Aker, Black, Neale, Priddis, Wowoedin.

And that's it. A quiet game is fine but if you play 4 good minutes and it goes to the wire. Your a champion. He was an Aaron Naughton touch (Or even a free for holding) and a ridiculous inside 50 where the dogs played kicked it into Sicily's face rather then a Bont 1v1 from potentially being 20 touches 3 goals

Look at the pile on for the champion. Carries his team in most games and yet gets singled out when many of his teammates had stinkers.one poor game does not undo the countless excellent ones.

Nah but it does mate.

You can sense from a mile off the morons here who would be the first to point the finger at the cricketer who stacks on runs left right and centre and then gets a duck in one run chase and say ‘well there’s proof he can’t handle it’ despite the volume of times he’s rescued the team from trouble, the golfer who gives up a third round lead at a major and ignore the couple of times he storms home to win one.

What are his recent good games on a consistent basis ? if that were the case he'd have more awards than he currently does!

Unlike other "champions" of the game he lacks the killer instinct to 1) inspire his teammates to lift with him and/or 2) single handedly drag his team over the line when others are performing poorly.
