Which team is "Austrlia's Team?"

My vote goes to the Brisbane Lions.
They get a lot of broadcast TV exposure, players like Brown, Black, and now Rich and Fevola are very well known around the country. Coach Michael Voss is also a highly recognized face.
The Brisbane Lions hold lots of support in Victoria as well as Queensland of course. Plus Brisbane are probably one of the most successful AFL teams of the last generation, if not the most successful.
Plus Queensland is like Australia's version of Texas. Hence the Dallas Cowboys connection.

Our president is a Lions fan.

I think Robbie Williams is also a big fan so I think that pretty much wraps it up. I dont think he knew who Collingwood or Carlton was or if he did he didnt say anything.

I think for the sake of argument we say Lions.

I think this alone invalidates whatever point you make

The TRUE Aussie football club unfortunately no longer exists. They merged with Brisbane, but feel free to wikipedia the "Fitzroy Lions" as they were the real mccoy.

As far as current clubs go, if Melbourne were actually successful in their last 40 years, and had a fan base and the financial support that was even slightly close to that of Collingwood, Essendon and Carlton then they'd be the club you'd go for.

I guess my answer will be probably Collingwood. Richmond and Essendon for the next few spots.

If you want to follow the club that were the architects of the AFL game invented over 150 years ago ... then google "Melbourne Grammar". Do NOT google "Scotch College". You'll download a keylogger and all your pr0n will turn into males in kilts. Steer well clear of that shit.

Collingwood has the most 'brand recognition' of any club, so if you were making comparisons to NFL then Dallas/Collingwood wouldn't be too far off the mark.

It's really hard to make comparisons though, because every AFL club is run like Green Bay is, with people buying memberships and holding a stake in the club.
As far as corporate brand recognition you've only held that title for the last couple of years. I remember Essendon had the most brand recognition out of any club of any sport in this country not too long ago.

Wish I could find the stats for that.
It has to be Sydney because Sydney is a synonym for Australia .

Sydney is the most well known team outside of Australia stemming from the VFL days when Sydney was the only side to play on (and be televised) on Sunday .

.
And because Sydney is synonymous with AFL and not any other football code. I whole-heartedly agree with you sir!

i should hope your president is a lions fans fan.............ffs he is president of the Brisbane lions football club:confused:

The Tom Brady Patriots are now "America's Team"

The Dallas Cowboys (& Green Bay Packers) just wish they were.

ODN's comparison between Dallas and Carlton is a good one. Very old and very wealthy private owners that struggle to remember player names, a team that overpays and overhypes their players, a history of players and drugs, around a decade since they last won a post season game . . . the similarities are uncanny.

More importantly for me, both have been the Saints whipping boys for most of the past decade. :thumbsu:

Err thanks ... I think. I was thinking more of this born to win mentality as though we have more right than other teams to be successful. It's definitely old school thinking that maybe takes some of the enjoyment out of just watching the game, appreciating the skills and seeing players development. If you don't win the game, some of us tend to take nothing out of it. Mind you, if we win, some are still unhappy.

More like this I think...

Western Australia = California w/o L.A.
Northern Territory = Arizona, outback
South Australia = Texas, redneck/bogan factor
Queensland = Florida with tycoon Texan mentality
New South Wales = New York, "look at me"
Australian Capital Territory = District of Columbia
Victoria = Illinois, playing second filddle to NSW (NY)
Tasmania = cold version of Hawaii
New Zealand = Alaska, Oz could buy it

South Australia is more like Iowa or Idaho, in that barely anyone outside of the country knows it exists, as I've learned. Or even Wisconsin, for that matter.

I've only ever heard Queensland being compared to Texas, myself, due to the conservative history and production of bogan rum and beer. No offence to any Queenslanders here though, I love the place, I swear.

Yeah I`ll have a go at this and nominate ..........the "Adelaide Crows"

I` know, how original, someone putting up their own team but think of how much more Australian can you get than a noisy crow picking at a dead kangaroo (hello Wayne) on highway 1 in the middle of the Nullarbor.

In the AFL their are only 2 iconic Australian teams...

North Melbourne Kangaroos

Adelaide Crows

These are what the people overseas would understand to be Australian.

Not these refugee mascots from the London zoo....

Richmond Tigers .....what, Sumatran or Bengal?

Brisbane Lions... weren`t they the Koalas?

Carlton Blues...... Blue what? Whales, crabs, Tack!!!

Collingwood Magpies... Nice birds (unless you need your eyes). But Aussie? nahhh!!

We also have pound animals, roadkill, Aeronautics, Physics and symbols of the Catholic faith.

It could be argued that the "Dockers" represent your typical Aussie male but I couldn`t see anyone from overseas understanding the anchor concept.

So, it brings us back to the 2 "Icons".

You would think the Kangaroos would be the obvious choice as Australias team. But I think not....

The late great Graham Kennedy cast his vote in the 70s in one word.............ffffffffffffffaaaaarrrrrrrkkkkk..........and that`s good enough for me:thumbsu::thumbsu:

LOL... Packers...

Cowboys = America's Team. Fact.
nah
since my twelth birthday it would of been the Patriots
the media made it that way after the New England patriots won the first superbowl post 9/11, saying they're a true indicant of Americans. Being patriotic and fighting to the end

you could also put arguements for the Cowboys, Packers and even the Cheifs.

Sounds more like a Yankees fan in the MLB than anything.

The over-inflated and deluded sense of importance.

Hi,

I am an American, and right now, it is Football season. In America, the Green Bay Packers are called America's team. Yes, some will argue that the lowly Dallas Cowboys are America's team, but the Packers have been around since the beginning, and they have a TON of titles, that is why the Packers are also called Title Town.

But, now since I am trying to follow this sport of yours, which team represents Australia? Who is Australia's team?

Bret
I have been to both Dallas and Green Bay. You wouldnt live in Green Bay if your life depended on it. I went to a game at lambeau field ( I think that's how its spelt, back in 97, heloween weekend, v Detroit, coldest night of my life) I had the good fortune of seeing Dallas' new stadium a month back, v Carolina, it was hot and humid but that's some stadium tho:thumbsu:.

The cowboys remind me more of Collingwood than Green Bay do. Its all showbiz for the cowboys, much like Collingwood is like Hollywood, a lot of hype and arrogance.

Does that mean Essendon are "America's team"?

I would have to nominate one of the following:

North Melbourne Kangaroos

No one really dislikes the Roo's, and they are a bit of a battling team at the moment (similar to a few others I guess) with Funds, Results and at a rebuilding stage. All Aussies love a battler, and of course they are the Kangaroos.

Adelaide Crows

Big fan base and a fair few likable players. A pretty strong team who has been slightly down over the past several years after winning a couple of Premierships on the Trot. Cant imagine too many people (besides Port Supporters) would be too upset about them succeeding again.

West Coast Eagles
So far away from everyone else (besides one of our Reserve Teams 'Fremantle') that we forget to hate them. Back in the late 90's they had a heap of lovable players, and most couldnt say a bad thing about them.

All in all though, we dont really have an 'Australian' team as we all basically hate each other in one way or the other.

For an American, Collingwood and Port Adelaide have recently drafted US Players, so they may be the best place to start.

Surveys have been done over the lat few years and its quite clear. The top 2 supported football clubs in Australia are the Brisbane Broncos (NRL) and the Brisbane Lions. They swap positions every now and then but they are the top 2.

So for AFL I guess its the Lions. Pity they don't respect the old Roy's as much as they should.

I know people will want me to link the surveys etc and I will if I have to. I'll just have to find them. They are in the news every now and then. I do have a life though so it may be a few days. (not much of a life reading the trash on here every few days).

Personally I believe its the Blues (yes, my club). We are arrogant selfless and believe we are a cut above the rest. Just like Australians in general. Perfect!
