Re: Who are your teams best players that weren't originally picked in the first 3 rounds of the draf

Hawkins, Selwood, Bartel

I don't even know how you've come to this conclusion. Not only do none of them meet the criteria, they're just a random three names of players who play for Geelong. Odd.

Re: Who are your teams best players that weren't originally picked in the first 3 rounds of the draf

Fremantle has had some succes with the rookie draft over the year, and all have played senior football this year, and of them I would say 6 - 7 would be in our best 22 if we had a full list to pick from, and from the others 5 have the potential to grown into top 22 players

Antoni Grover (1999) - 156 games
Roger Hayden (2002) - 100 games
Aaron Sandilands (2003) - 125 games
Steven Dodd (2004) - 86 games
Daniel Gilmore (2004) - 42 games
Ryan Crowley (2005) - 78 games
Michael Johnson (2005) - 84 games
Paul Duffield (2006) - 33 games
Andrew Foster (2007) - 5 games
Greg Broughton (2009) - 3 games
Matt de Boer (2009) - 5 games
Luke Pratt (2009) - 1 game
Clancee Pearce (2009) - to play against port this weekend

But in our best players

Re: Who are your teams best players that weren't originally picked in the first 3 rounds of the draf

Interesting - a few years ago there was only about 30 ex-rookies on lists. Now it seems most clubs have 4-5, with some up in the 8-9 mark.

Has the greater exposure of kids made drafting 'safer' - resulting in longer careers, less player turnover - and the flexibility of the rookie list an option for 'potential' players?

Re: Who are your teams best players that weren't originally picked in the first 3 rounds of the draf

Nathan Foley
Will Thursfield
Angus Graham
Andy Collins

Happy with the Tigers picks

nahas
white
moore
newman (55)
jackson (53)
raines (lets wait and see if he can return to his early career form when he can get on the park for longer than a few games)

Re: Who are your teams best players that weren't originally picked in the first 3 rounds of the draf

I presume Pre-season draft relates to recycled players, if so then Adelaide looks like:

Simon Goodwin 18th pick 96 Pre-season
Tyson Edwards 21st pick 94 Pre-season
Nathan Bock 25th pick Rookie Draft 2001
Ben Rutton 40th pick Rookie Draft 2001

Chris Knights R4 pick 56 2004
Graham Johncock Pick 67 2000
Michael Doughty 4th pick Rookie draft 1999
Jason Porplyzia 9th Pick 2006 Pre-season
Taylor Walker pick 75 2007 (NSW Scholarship)

Re: Who are your teams best players that weren't originally picked in the first 3 rounds of the draf

Dean Brogan - rookie list
Dom Cassisi - pick 50
Jacob Surjan - PS draft
Danyle Pearce - rookie list
Matt Thomas - PS draft
Robbie Gray - pick 55
Justin Westhoff - Pick 71

All regulars this year. Not a bad list.

Re: Who are your teams best players that weren't originally picked in the first 3 rounds of the draf

Sewell.

(Young, Campbell, Guerra, Osborne, Moss, Stokes, Gilham, McGlynn)

All rookie list elevations. Over a third of our best '25'

When was Guerra ever on a rookie list?

On quantity (and arguably quality), I reckon Eagles and us would be ahead by far.

Guerra was never on a rookie list. He was a PSD pick-up for Hawthorn and doesn't qualify under the rules of the OP because he was a pick inside the first three rounds for Port (don't recall which).

Gilham was a first round draft pick for Port before they delisted him. We put him on the rookie list and elevated him three years ago (from memory). He doesn't count under the rules of the OP.

Morris (Rookie)(100th game due round 13)
Boyd (Rookie) (100+ games)
Josh Hill #61
Brian Lake #71 (100+ games)
Daniel Cross #56 (150+games)
Ryan Hargrave #66(150th in Round 11)
Stephen Tiller #54
Jarrod Harbrow (Rookie)
Picken (Rookie)

On quantity and QUALITY I am pretty sure the Bulldogs have your Hawthorn list covered.
Remember we could also count Ben Hudson #58 to Adelaide in 2003.

Re: Who are your teams best players that weren't originally picked in the first 3 rounds of the draf

yeah of those that have played this year, Matt Campbell, Aaron Edwards, Michael Firrito, Josh Gibson, Nathan Grima, Leigh Harding, Corey Jones, Ed Lower, Scott McMahon, Ben Ross, Josh Smith, Lindsay Thomas & Ben Warren

Pratt was originally a 3rd rounder before being delisted and I'm not sure on Brent Harvey, he was our 4th pick but i think it still might have been a 3rd rounder

Nonsense. We're the PREMIERS!!!! :D:p

Seriously, I've got a heck of a shock at how many teams have so many. It seems that this is an area where most/all teams have caught up to the Hawks/Eagles. When I posted, it was under the perception that there wouldn't be many teams with more than 3-4 players - instead most have 5+.

Re: Who are your teams best players that weren't originally picked in the first 3 rounds of the draf

If it's a player that you traded for or was picked up in the pre-season draft, same deal - can't have originally been drafted as a first/second/third rounder.

I'm including Michael Johnson as he was a PSD pick - but a first time draftee, not a recycled player...

  1. Sandilands (rookie)
  2. Hayden (rookie)
  3. Johnson (PSD)
  4. Duffield (rookie)
  5. Crowley (4th round)
  6. Grover (rookie)

We also have Dodd (rookie) and Thornton (5th round) as regular players in our 22, but as your OP suggested players who are actually good, then it's quite obvious that they shouldn't - well couldn't - occupy a place on the above list.

I also have high hopes, that within a few years the following guys will be entrenched in our 22:
deBoer (1st year rookie)
Pearce (1st year rookie)
Walters (1st year 4th round draftee)
Bucovaz (1st year 4th round draftee - part of the Warnock deal)
Hall (1st year 6th round draftee)

with Broughton (rookie) as a solid depth player.
