I don't have a preferred coach just want one that the players play for.

Clearly didn't for Woosha or Rutten (regardless of small talk).

That is 50% of coaching. If the players won't run through brick walls for you, your'e finished.

Probably would help to draft some players that demonstrated that ability at junior level.

Both terrible defensive coaches for a playing group that doesn't know how to defend.

If Dean Solomon were a former Sydney player instead of Essendon everyone would look at his coaching record and be repulsed that we'd consider him for an assistant job.

What do you base that on? He doesn’t have to be involved with defense either.

This was a small snippet from an article earlier in the year about Solomon’s time at the Gold Coast:

“Those who have spent a chunk of time at the expansion club since it was created believe Solomon was the most popular person to walk in the door. Many players think he is the best coach to work for the club.”

He was also reportedly runner up to Justin Longmuir in the Fremantle job a couple of years ago so he must be rated by some.

There are a number of roles to fill at a footy club and we know he would work well with Hird.

Players: Bugger that . That feels like hard work pass.

Basically, this:
Solomon would be as stupid as Hird. Seriously, if you think he'd be any good you've pretty obviously not looked at his record as an assistant coach. He's so ******* bad at being an assistant that if we hired him in that role we'd be stupid.

In 2010 he was the defensive coach for Fremantle. They conceded a goal 26.48% of the time it entered defensive 50 that year.
From 2011-2019 he was in charge of defence at Gold Coast. Under his tenure as defensive coach Gold Coast conceded on average 103 points a game, conceded over 300 goals every year bar one, conceded on average a goal 26.4% of the time it entered forward 50, and conceded 100 points 105 times in 198 games, essentially every other game.
Since being moved on from defence, Gold Coast on average concede a goal 21.97% of the time, concede on average 78.4 points a game, haven't conceded more than 300 goals at all, and have conceded 100 points 12 times in 61 games, essentially once every 5 games.

I'd be abhored if he was even in contention for an assistant coaching role, let alone the senior coach
And since GC punted him, he's done 3 months of part time assistant coaching at GWS...

Our biggest problem with defending is turnovers with lack of fwd pressure inside 50.

No team can defend the ball continually coming out of defence following a fast offensive play when there is a turnover or zero pressure when the ball hits the deck inside 50.

Look at the Lions on the weekend, turnovers made their defence look like ours.

Not saying we don't need better team defence overall but nail 80% of forward entries and the issue ain't as big as it seems.

Wasn't there something about Solomon being booted from GC because he was seen to be a threat to Dew?

There was something strange about his departure.

He was booted because he sucks and it took them a decade to realise it.

Yeah, pretty much. Players loved him but the whole thing was kinda swept under the rug and moved on from because it was the GC.

It was a bit more than that. There was a bit of a division between some of the playing group. Some in the Solly cam and some in the Dew camp.

If Hird gets through and is considered the best candidate I have a gut feeling he may well just be the phoenix rising from the ashes and get the job done.
I have been a solid no but you ask anyone who played under him and they all loved him. No one has a bad word to say about him from that playing group and a couple of players I am still in contact with still say how much of a motivator he was and how everyone just wanted to play for him.
I am a bit torn. I was annoyed at the time that he took so long to actually own his part in the whole debacle. I know he would never have deliberately put his players in danger but he had to own it sooner rather than drag things out . However I have a strange feeling he has it in him to be the bloke who will get it done.

I’d say this is how most of us are feeling. Would rather not, but if he gets in I’ll be getting my standbyhird signs back out of the cupboard
