I agree for the most part, which is why I find it interesting that it sounds like we're also interviewing assistants without a head coach.

Timing as much as anything. Need to have the core of a coaching panel in place going into preseason at the latest. Interviewing and appointing though are different.

It's about a Cwood coach - so might as well post here. Doing a Covid cleanout - came across this. I wrote to Bob Rose wishing him well when he got the gig for the 2nd time in 1985. Ever the gentleman he wrote back...

Olympic Village under 10's we had that quote on the wall in the change rooms along with: A Champion team will always beat a team of Champions! What a precious memento you have there!

had letters from Tom Hafey and Ranald McDonald at one stage too - think I misplaced them :(

I got a response from Ranald when I complained about the failure of Collingwood to hold on to Phillip Walsh. He told me Collingwood only wanted players who wanted to play for Collingwood. I tore up his moronic letter.

Not surprised Ranald wrote a moronic letter!

perception is...

McKay, Weitering, Walsh, Cripps, Cerra, Curnow, Martin, Saad, Williams, Stocker, Silvagni + more autonomy + more board stability + less scrutiny (both harsh but potentially true right now)

> vs

Moore, De Goey, Quaynor, Daicos x 2, Maynard (uncertain), Henry, Macrae, Poulter, Reef, McMahon + cap pressure + 2x fathers on potential board + presidential infighting + lower base to start from + perceived unfair treatment of previous (superior) coach & respected president

Everyone knows that we are 3+ years away from contending, whereas Blues are seen as potentially a 1-2 years proposition before they could start winning more than they lose
Perceived unfair treatment of the previous coach? Any prospective coach would love to cop the 'unfair' treatment Buckley endured for ten years.🙄

Hawthorn assistant Craig McRae has skyrocketed to outright favourite to take the vacant Collingwood coaching position, according to Australia’s top betting agencies.

Sheahan Ink revealed last week McRae is seriously being considered to take the coveted role. Formerly of Richmond, the current Hawthorn assistant was $34 on Sportsbet last Sunday but has shortened over the week to have the 47-year-old now outright favourite at $1.70.

Ladbrokes also has McCrae outright favourite at $1.75.

Only one person can rain on McRae’s parade and that is legendary coach and his boss at Hawthorn, Alastair Clarkson.

Insiders say its McRae’s job to lose and a godfather offer to Clarkson is the only way the three-time Brisbane premiership player will miss out.

Former Adelaide Crows coach turned Sydney Swans assistant Don Pyke was widely considered an early favourite.

Sheahan Ink has been told Magpies decision makers informed Pyke he would have to interview better than McRae to leapfrog him into the role.

Little known West Coast Eagle’s assistant Jaymie Graham interviewed incredibly well but, Collingwood’s coaching committee fears Graham’s age, 38, and low profile will work against him for such a big, powerful club.

Robert Harvey is not without hope with Collingwood’s senior players keen to have the incumbent coach remain at the helm.

The club’s coaching committee, comprising of board members Paul Licuria and Peter Murphy, chief executive Mark Anderson, head of football Graham Wright and former player Luke Ball, now face the difficult task of choosing between the talented cohort.

Licuria said a decision was not that far away: “We haven’t got a time limit on it, but would rather it done sooner rather than later. Covid slowed it down a little for obvious reasons and we also have to respect coaches roles in other teams.”

If that’s a Tony two phones article then it needs to be taken with a bucket of salt

McRae is going to be fed to the wolves and torn apart if he's selected, just like Teague but with a worse list.

McRae might actually be a good coach though
He's only been a senior AFL assistant for 2 years (including this year), inherits a terrible list and no salary cap. I highly doubt he makes finals in his time at the club. He'll develop the younger players well and then get sacked after 3 years for someone more tactical like McCartney to Beveridge, calling it now.

I'm okay with that. Maybe Clarkson is done with his sabbatical by then
