Re: Lucas or Jetta?

I think we'll be better positioned to make a more accurate decision on this after trade week.

If we do pick up a Stokes (highly doubtful) or a similar player, then Jetta isnt as required and i think we'll take the safe bet with Lucas.

Even if we dont trade any more players, id still like us to select Lucas.

Come finals time these days,
I dont think you can have enough A grade midfielders.

Re: Lucas or Jetta?

At least one of Butcher, Martin, Cunnington, Morabito and Rohan will slide to pick 7, I'd prefer one of them over Lucas and Jetta personally.

Either way, we'll be getting a quality player:D

Re: Lucas or Jetta?

Would take Lucas/Cunnington/Butcher/Tapscott/Stevens ahead of Jetta in that order. I still think we are a chance of picking him up in the second round. Stranger things have happened in the past.....

Nah not Cunnington. Too similar to what we already have.
Rohan is a big risk and has a lot to work on, and only Butcher of the rest is likely to slide IMO.
From what I gather the top 4 is sewn up, with Richmond and Freo courting Martin and Morabito respectively.
NM and Sydney have decent KP forward stocks, which is why Butcher may slide.
With the likelyhood of guys like Duncan, Colyer, Ah Chee and Bastinac being around at 22/23, I would love to grab Butcher at 7.

Re: Lucas or Jetta?

Lucas is the safe bet. If we took Jetta I'd be pleased too, don't want Cunnington though.

I'm almost leaning towards Sheppard. Oooozes class.

Re: Lucas or Jetta?

It's a tough choice - you can make convincing arguments either way.

Lucas has a less genuine standout abilites but a better rounded game, but Jetta has more genuine standout abilities but a less rounded game with more exploitable holes in his game at present (particularly lack of accountability and outside style).

In terms of what we have already, both will add good qualities to our list, however Jetta potentially more given we don't have anyone remotely like him ATM.

What about Winmar with a 3rd round pick?
Somewhat similar to Jetta

Troy Taylor

Hadnt heard of the young NT boy until reading the AFL draft watch: 17 most likely where he featured. Anyone got any information on him, is he quick, small, tall.... and does anyone have any footage of him, i'd be really interested in finding some more out about him. Any chance he'll go at 7, or for our picks 22 and 23? cheers.

Spot on.

I can't say I'm overly excited about either Jetta or Lucas and while Jetta certainly is more rare, I don't like his size or his chances of putting on size, which meas his defensive and inside games will always be lacking, as you said.

Lucas on the other hand would just be another player who can't kick very well, at least IMO, which isn't overly appealing.

To think last year pick 7 gets you awesome skills and a mature body (Rich) or a smooth half forward with great skills (Yarren) and this year you can't even get a player with a complete game

Re: Troy Taylor

188cm (and still growing, I gather), high jumping, big marking forward who has been likened to Micky O'Loughlin. Agile and full of X factor. Probably not big enough to ever be a traditional FF, but would be a great 3rd tall.

"Troy Taylor, well Troy was a real eye catcher. Taking some fantastic contested marks, kicking some wonderful goals and provided fantastic pressure on the opposition, some scouts are calling him the new Micky O (Michael O’Loughlin) based on some of the freakish things he did during the Carnival"

"Agile footballer with clean skills by hand and foot. Second efforts, ball-winning ability and marking are also features of his game. Northern Territory U18 representative in 2009"

"Tania (His mother) understood the draft could take him anywhere, but wasn't keen on him heading to Perth, because she felt there were some bad influences there. It wasn't until Fremantle flew to Alice a few weeks back, and spoke to her about the support network it could set up for Troy, that she felt content with the thought of him moving anywhere."

Averaged 13 touches, 4 marks and 1.4 goals per game at the Championships.
Freo, Port, North and Collingwood have been courting him

Has had quite a few run ins with the law, as Black Ball added.
Will probably be doing year 12 next year, so I doubt he'll see much early action.

Doubt he'll go first round. Probably mid-late 2nd round. Someone might jump the gun after seeing Jurrah tear it up this year, or they might think he is all flash, no substance and is a PR risk and he slides right through.
I reckon Freo will grab him at 20, they seem to be very interested.

Re: Lucas or Jetta?

BS, I like Winmar a lot - he has a low level of production and hasn't demonstrated the game-breaking ability of Jetta yet, but he has a wide range of attractive attributes (>190cm, strong build, pace, evasiveness, clean hands, overhead marking, all-round DM ability, accurate long kicking, tackling ability) and does use them very well to impact when he's fresh.

However, the big ? with Winmar (and even bigger for us considering we play most our footy on the long Subiaco oval) is his running capacity, which ATM is poor for midfield standards (and doesn't seem to have improved much from last year). Whether recruiters are confident he can build that upto the high levels required for an AFL midfielder will determine where he finishes up in the order - he would be a very good and worthwhile project for any club, but not near enough to a 'definite AFL prospect' as Jetta is yet.

Re: Troy Taylor

I wouldn't say that Lucas has a bad kick - it's a good kick over upto ~30m with good form, but when striving for distance or on the run just doesn't keep balance well or kick straight through the ball (like Mitch Duncan who has very good form and always has head over ball), but I also think that Lucas has a lot of growing ahead of him and will become a very good tall mid. Looks like he'll grow taller and will fill out well.

From what I've seen of the Jetta vids, like his poise and run (not as quick as first touted, but doesn't painic and has a feel for when he's going to get tackled) and attacks well, but also feel he puts out reckless handballs and don't believe he'll put on that much weight. I'd be happy to spend a second rounder on Jetta, but for the first pick I'd say our list of preferneces goes as follows:

Morabito
Scully
Trengove
Butcher
Martin
Lucas
Rohan
Sheppard
Talia

I don't think Talia gets higher because I've yet to see any report showing he dominated a game.

Re: Lucas or Jetta?

2009 WAFL averages

Lucas (12 Games) - 8 Kicks, 9 Handballs, 17 Disposals, 4 Marks, 0.5 Goals

Jetta (22 Games) - 11 Kicks, 4 Handballs, 15 Disposals, 4 Marks, 0.63 Goals

and 3 years different in age?

Give me the younger bloke anyday

2 years actually, perhaps negated by his inexperience at higher levels.
To put it this way, he's 2 days younger than Chris Masten, but probably isn't as physically mature as Masten.

I would say he would be 23 or so by the time he had sufficient strength to be a consistent contributor.

Re: Lucas or Jetta?

I'm sold on Lucas. I think he has genuine superstar potential despite what people say. A lot of people were talking up his elite kicking a few months ago and I doubt that was for no reason. He's a brilliant athlete and a genuine footballer with great vision and solid defensive qualities when required. A great overhead mark as well who could play as a damaging forward/midfielder.

I see Lucas vs. Jetta as similar to Chapman vs. Davis

Who would you prefer going into a GF with?

BTW check out Colyer's run in the video as well.

Re: Lucas or Jetta?

tsp - You would obviously take Chappy, but Lucas critically doesn't possess the extraordinary levels strength/power in his game of Chapman (and most likely never will) - overall he is probably most similar in style to Pendlebury (IIRC he has mentioned him as one of the players he has models himself on), as a smart, elusive athletic, tall outside midfielder that can work well in traffic.

It is probably more like Pendlebury vs Lovett when comparing Lucas and Jetta...
