Strange seeing Carlton players in real life and not in the Theatre of the Gods.

I went to the pictures (a rerun of Taxi Driver at the Lumiere when it was in Lonsdale) with a uni mate back in the 1990s. We walked into town down Lygon St, sugared up from cakes (millefeuille the Gelo Bar when Paula ran it, nice lady, not the next bloke who got shot outside) and I needed a wee so I stepped into the Astor which was run by Perce Jones (now the Green Man). He came out from behind the bar and hassled my mate "isn't he going to buy anything?". I finish up, trot out and he comes out again. Perce was drunk as a skunk at 7 pm on a Tuesday night. he says again "arentcha going to buy anything?" and I shot back "nah mate, I'm a Collingwood supporter" haha suffer Percy.

Few years before that I was working at the Lygon Inn (I think its a best Western now) in the kitchen (you could work part time and pay your way through Uni back then). I was heading in to work on a Friday arvo (arvo shift 3PM-1 AM) and we had Carlton at the G the next day. I was feeling pretty good, thought we might belt them. Turned down Grattan street toward work, and coming out the front door of one of the terrace houses was Alex Mother****ing Jesaulenko. He look me straight in the eyes and gave me a little nod and a warm friendly smile. A reassuring, kind smile, like Satan gives you when you land in Hell. Talk about omens, I knew with utter certainty we were done, and it was so.

I had a long chat with Val Perovic and Jim Buckley one night in a nightclub when Val was my neighbour..
Fair to say the boys weren't rocket scientists.
In their 50's, hammered, and being sleazy in a nightclub full of 18-30 year Olds.
