Sure, I was just surprised a 9 disposal 1.6 goal a game forward finished 8th in the B&F for the 3rd best team of the year. I guess it was helped because some of Geelong's better players over the back half like Humphries and Mannagh didn't play enough games to finish high up

None. Chol had a similar year to Henry for us while providing a bit more defensive pressure and he finished 17th. He did flop in the finals though

Different coaches value different things. It wasn't a criticism, I just noticed it and was surprised he was that high

Good comparison
Though while at times frustrating, Henry doesn't seem to cop supporter angst as Chol does
Apart from the EF and when he stupidly got suspended early in the year Chol hasn't copped much supporter angst at Hawthorn. Most of us have been pleasantly surprised to see how much defensive effort he puts in

When our B&F results came in I thought Chol would be higher than 17th. I thought he would be around 12th to 14th. In a similar way I thought Henry would also be around the same number so was surprised when I saw he was 8th

Chol's finals series was brilliantly atrocious though, whereas Henry actually stepped up.

Henry is a dangerous forward gets in the right spots and doesn’t need many possessions to have an impact. With Cameron/Neale and a small forward group of Stengle, Miers, Close at their feet the Cats scoring options looks really good.

End of last season I was very concerned with the state of our forward line. The club has done a brilliant job in quickly pulling together Chol/Dear as talls with a small forward group of Moore/Connor/Ginni/Wiz at their feet while still having Gunston and Bruest at the club to not only play but more importantly to guide them. Very happy using our first pick on the Wiz the kid does things you can’t teach! With Lewis coming back and other options available with Battle/Barrass arriving …… Sam has plenty of options to throw the magnets around.

Both clubs will kick good scores from quantity/quality forward entires

To be fair, we don't so much fight those guys as we just get attacked relentlessly by like 10 dudes for some reason. It's real weird

Yeah what do you call it when they make 10 shitpost threads a week talking about an opposition team instead of their own? And the same 3 or 4 guys continuously do it while permanently living online. Some serious cases of blokes that need to “touch grass”

It’s hilarious watching the conspiracy theory melts though, the Tugger cookers are deranged, and the best bit is the Tuggers wouldn’t even be top 3 with Cats supporters for most disliked opposition or rivals LOL

With Hawks fans and the Piss and Shits, it’s a heated rivalry that’s built on respect that doesn’t even come close in terms of anyone else. For Cats fans, they are enemy number 1….then daylight and then maybe you could say the Pies as a second rival because of all of those Finals matchups.

Maybe a hint of jealousy from our conspiracy nut friends because they’re soo desperate to be relevant in Cats fans eyes and we just laugh at them and how cooked they are. Gotta love one way rivalries lol

I imagine a key part of Chols role would be to ensure a contest and bring ball to ground for the small forwards, which is largely unheralded

Yep he was terrible. But I would cut him a break as he was carrying a arm / wrist / forearm injury for the latter part of the season. He missed a couple of games because of it and it wasn't quite right. It definitely affected his marking and defensive efforts in a marking contest.

How is Mitch Lewis tracking this pre season?
Is he over injuries or is he the sort of player who looks destined to deal with them for his career?
Looking fit. On the track still only straight line running followed by goal kicking practise. Yeah fingers crossed he gets a good run at it when he makes it back.

Hawthorn had the 5th hardest draw in 2024, according to experts, but now it’s a soft draw because they made finals and all its youngsters are just average. 🤪

The “hardest” draw debate is extremely subjective so we can go around in circles debating this or just agree to disagree. My view is Hawthorn will get found out this year after many players over performed last year with a relatively unknown game plan and next year they will slide back. Doesn’t mean that 2025, 2026 etc will follow the same trend but it’s no an unreasonable opinion and just because you don’t agree with it, doesn’t mean it’s not a possibility.

Let’s bump this end of the season. Hawthorn will miss the 8 (and before you mention Essendon, we will comfortably miss as well).

People were bagging O Henry in the back half of the season when he was playing hurt as well.
Even though Henry kicked over 40 goals in 2023 which was top 15 in the entire League and he started off the 2024 season brilliantly too.

Once Ollie was fit again we saw how important he was. Kicked 4 against the Lions and nearly single handed put the Cats in the Grand Final with 2 minutes to go.

These guys play unheralded roles.

We also had a really crowded tall forward line rotation from about round 8 onwards in 2024.

Remember when we tried to shove at least 4 of Hawkins (cooked), Cameron, Neale, Rohan (cooked) and Henry into the same side? I think we might've even had all 5 at some point. It was a terrible structure and our midfield was at its absolute worst for that stretch too.

The early and latter parts of the season where we had a better balance and a midfield that (mostly) put up a fight, Henry's numbers and output were unsurprisingly a lot better. But even with less talls late this year, there were a lot of mouths to feed in the forward line as Mannagh broke in to add to Cameron, Neale, Henry, Miers, Stengle, Close and sometimes Dempsey. Rohan getting injured was what seemed to open it up again for Ollie.

You’re free to have your opinion, but “over performing” is simply not possible.

You either produce to your capability or you do not. It’s that simple.

Hawthorn produced to their capability in 2024 and with the age/experience on the park as well as added and returning players it makes far more logical sense to suggest they should get better, not worse.

As for Hawthorn winning games because they had an unknown gameplan, that’s just silly.
“Just wait until other clubs put some work into Hawthorn” we kept hearing that all through the second half of the year.
The idea that Hawthorn won games on the back of opposition analysts at each club not bothering to turn up and do their job when Hawthorn was their next opponent is one of the dumbest things I read throughout the season and you seem to running with it too.
The reality is Hawthorn won games in 2024 because they don’t have a one or even two headed snake to quell and kill. They are even across the park, and have a bunch of players who can fill multiple roles. On top of that you have to put a lot of effort into stopping all of Sicily, Weddle, Amon, Scrimshaw and Impey bouncing off half back, which was a harder task for any opposition than simply understanding the gameplan.

What would be your pass mark then, given they were a whisker off a prelim in 2024? Grand final appearance?
