It's a socio-economic thing.

That being said, the Swans will always be my number one team and when they play the Giants I’m still as one sided as it gets, but I want them to do well as I know it’s good for footy in my state and maybe in 20 years from now a true rivalry will have been built.

I know we have had brisbane era 2001-2003 geelong 2007-2011 a flag in the odd number year ,hawthorn 2013-2015 and now richmond 2017,2019 but for mine they have all been in clumps. As with west coast its more spread out their flags only real years of time they really struggled was just when mick malthouse left to go to Collingwood around 2000 till 2004 but they soon won one in i think 2006. They fell a bit flat around 2009-2011 but did make the GF it was 2015 and in 2012 till 2015 made finals. Come 2017 they were back again till this day. And 1990's they won 1992 and 1994 and took till say 1998 to peter out and was the last of malthouses years too.
To me since the AFL only the AFL they are the proven all rounders west coast. The north melbourne 1990's,brisbane 2001-2004 geelong hawthorn and now tigers its all been in clumps.
As with a win a flag and fall away for 10 years or more award goes to Collingwood won 1990 ok nice to win did jack sh*t Collinwobbles struck in 2002 and 2003 and it wasnt till 2010 till their next one wow thats a 15 year wait and was won on a replay. And since 2010 exept runners up 2018 they really have not set the house on fire.
St.kilda 2009 and 2 times to win it in 2010 has been the most unlucky.
Good to see footscray win their fairytale flag in 2016 was really happy for them.
I see a trend in GF most times i feel its a non vic team v a vic team.
I cant recall the last time we had an all vic gf and also a all non vic gf.

As im a Collingwood man by 2030 like to see Collingwood get their sh*t together I feel they have a bit to go but like to see a flag in say 2-3 years then another one shortly after say there must be some changes all round i feel.
If they are smart then the flags will come but currently they are suspect still and injury are more and more.

The Battle of the Bridge is a manufactured rivalry, which is understandable, because the AFL are trying to replicate the great rivalries the SA and WA sides have...

The SA and WA derby’s are by far the biggest rivalries in the AFL...

Rivalry is sustained by the players themselves and their actions on the field.

Both WC/Freo & Port/Crows players have at times in the last 25 years genuinely hated each other and the fans have lapped it up, with Gaffs actions reigniting what had become a bit ho hum (with fans investing more in the rivalry than the players).

GWS & Sydney looked like developing a pretty healthy rivalry but Sydney players recently don’t have the appetite for flying the flag (see the Dockers probably since 2016).
