Who would we be looking to draft?

IMO, McKernan is NO chance of going in the top 10.
But still, who knows what will happen come draft day.

I wasnt that impressed with what I have seen of him.....looks a little soft to me......also dont beleive he will be able to rotate in the ruck at AFL level..

That being said I have no confidence in Harts or Edwards becoming anything above average if AFL quality footballers at all, Fisher is too 1 dimensional and I think he will be trade bait when the new teams come in.

We really need to start preparing for our fwd structure post Fev now

I don't know much about these kids playing but i have question on them. WIll these kids be ready to step straight into AFL and play round 1 or do they still need time to develop before we play em. Will they be in our best 22 when we pick em?

For our first pick, both Hurley and Ziebell would be ready for AFL footy, both being big bodied players and very hard at it. If we went with Hartlett, not sure he would slot in straight away as he is much more light on.

Tell you what. If McKernan gets to our 2nd pick and we take him, you'll see me doing cartwheels down Lygon Street straight after the draft.

If we finished a bit higher on the ladder and ended up with a pick somewhere in the range of 8-10, I would have been all for taking McKernan, but now that we've got pick 6 we would be reaching if we took him there and should go for the safer option in whoever out of Watts, Rich, Naitanui, Hartlett, Hurley, Ziebell is still around (at least 1 of them will be around :)).

Even though he'll be too short to play in the ruck at AFL level, McKernan impressed me with his contested marking ability and his ability to present strongly up forward. He'd be a perfect fit for us up forward, so if we somehow get him at our 2nd rounder we would be incredibly pleased.

I'd very surprised if Yarran fell out of the first round to be honest TG.
I didn't mean to say Yarran will fall out of the first round, but he's a bit vanilla size like Rioli who was picked with selection 12 last year.

List wise, Collingwood, St Kilda, Footscray or Kangaroos might need a young inside midfielder like Robinson or Broadbent more than they need another small forward.

I think Rioli only ran a 7 beep or something like that because his result at draft camp was poorer than Betts'.

Clubs don't usually pick a small forward in the first round unless you have a list as good as Hawthorn's and he's the icing on the cake. Hawthorn may have gone for the younger Ebert if they were short on one paced midfielders who can win the ball and use it well.

Is Pearce or Hill a chance for our second rounder?

We do need a pacy defender with pace and class. :thumbsu:

Yarran just seems to have that special balance and evasiveness that will stamp him as a class act at AFL level if he can play at the required intensity.

I love what I've seen from Hill, even though it's only a small amount.

Seems like an absolute ball magnet, and uses it well. Reminds me a bit of Dale Thomas in that there's just something about him that screams "EXCITEMENT".

I'd be all for taking Hill with our 2nd round pick on talent, but I think we need to draft a KPP, especially if we go with Ziebell/Hartlett with our 1st rounder. If we take Hurley though, I wouldn't mind getting Hill with a pick in the mid-20s. Having said that, I'd prefer Blease. Has "gun" written all over him.

Unfortunately i think we might need a higher second round pick to get either Hill or Blease. Both quality prospects i'd be shocked if either fell to pick 24 but in saying that, as many people have already said, anything can happen.

Im another big Blease fan.....has pace, determination and all the tools.....just needs to get a little stronger

Very good prospect, doesn't rack up the numbers normally but when he get boy is he damaging. What you see in this clip is probably the exact amount of touches he go in the game, just shows how effective he is.

As you can see is very light on though as Aissassin mentioned.

Someone has to fall J, and it could be McKernan. From what I have seen, there are just plain out better footballers than McKernan, and they will go in front of him. At the moment, I have him going in the early 20's, so he could very well be there for our second pick.

Hill a better chance at 6 than 24 ;)

Blease: not sure i would use the word determination in the same sentence. Needs a good fire cracker up the proverbial post-champs.

Hill is a chance for our first round pick?

Pearce.

Think we will get another blasted midfielder or defender at 24 and miss out on all the good talls in this draft.

Maybe next year Carlton. :(

Need to trade aggressively because we still have too many NQR players in the team to become a contender and play finals next year.

We were flattered by having a good midfield, a good backline and playing dud or out of form sides such as the Power, Lions, Dogs, Pies and Tigers.

We couldn't even beat Essendon this year.

Spoken like the true drafting guru that you are Wayne :thumbsu:

I have a challenge for you: name me one player you would have a better chance at picking up with pick 24 than you would with pick 6 ;)

I reckon you'd have a better chance picking up Adrian Totino at 24 than 6 ;)

I'd very surprised if Yarran fell out of the first round to be honest TG. Should we keep our first and second round selections, we'll end up with 2 pretty good pick ups on our list.

Depending on which way we go, we could end up with a combination like:

Ziebell/McKernan
Hurley/Blease
Vickery/Pearce
Hartlett/McKernan

My ideal combination would be Ziebell and Lisle, but sadly, I reckon Lisle will go between our first and second round selections.

I'm very much hoping that one of:

McKernan
L Johnston
Lisle

falls to our second round. Unlikely but anything can happen, there are always surprises on the draft day.

I agree, i think we have to explore all avenues to try and make this happen. When i say this, i mean being able to get Ziebell/Hurley/Hartlett + L.Johnston/Lisle/McKernan.

I think that its a fair bit of a long shot to expect on of those second three to fall to our 2nd round pick (pick 24) or even our 3rd round pick (pick 40), i've said this before but i believe to best way to go in trade week is to upgrade our 2nd rounder to another low to middle first round. While i think pick 24 would still get us a handy player, i think there is a step in class between say Shaun McKernan and the next best KPP, say Tom Lynch.

It obviously sounds easy in theory but i think we have the trade bait to get it done. Personally i'd put Nick Stevens up for trade, yes he's been very good but he is 29 and I think it's to much to carry him, Scotland and Houlihan, all pretty unaccountable players, Stevens would hold the most value, just look at what Travis Johnstone got last year. We wouldn't get as much but Stevens + our 3rd rounder for the Roos/Sydney's 1st rounder would be a good bet. We would be assured at least Lisle and McKernan with Richmond the only team standing in our way of Johnston.

It's just an example but anyone else think upgrading one of our picks to get one of Lisle (would play back though), Johnston or McKernan is worth it considering our need for another quality big man that not only provides a target in a year or two but also when Fev starts to get on in his career, remember he is 28, someone would be ready to take a leading role.

Here is a list of players who I would like to take at #6 and #24, in no particular order -

Natanui
Rich
Watts
Hurley (likely #6)
Hartett (likely #6)
Ziebell (likely #6)
Yarran
Johnston
Sidebottom
Broadbent
Suban
Robinson
Cornelius
McKernan
Trengrove
Swift
Lisle
Vickery
Blease
Cordy (F/S Bulldogs)
Hill

now now given that there are 21 names above, we need at least 3 smokies - or 3 selections to come from left field (bolters etc) in order to ensure that we get any 2 of the above list (one of the above mentioned players falls to #24).

... unless of course, we find a way to upgrade our 2nd rounder ... then we'd have a better chance.
