The easy answer is Geelong - they've just not brough through a next generation midfield or forward line. But also, somehow thye have a way of staying afloat so I wouldn't put money on it.

Richmond on the brink of wheels falling off.
Carlton may just totally lose themselves after that finals series - I reckon Vossy will get a bit desperate in 2024

Sam De Koning is literally one of the best young key defenders in the game just for a start….And just remember Geelong have never needed premium picks to stay relevant, players such as Stewart, Blicavs, J.Henry, Atkins etc are all either rookies or very late picks. I have no issue with our list going forward. This end of season will be abit of turnover like 2015, a few players will leave/retire but we will be very active in the trade period bringing in prime aged players.
You're on the downslide. Hawkins should have retired, a selfish decision from him.

Is it falling off a cliff after winning four premierships over 15 years?? Or more like a happy retirement for a billionaire

Falling off a cliff is more a word I would use for a club which has failed miserably or underachieved. Aka Melbourne footy club if they drop down the ladder or if Brisbane declined.

Success retiring isn’t something I would phrase as falling off a cliff. Seems stupidity to word it that way
Not sure what you want to call it, but the end of a successful era for the Cats... falling out of the finals after winning a flag. But the big fall was last season, so won't be next season.

Whilst the Cats still have plenty of older players, have traded or drafted in young talent in recent years, so will be interesting to see how Scott transitions the side.

Imo, you are better placed than Richmond who spent plenty of draft capital on Hopper & Taranto, thinking they were still in contention.

None of those guys drove your success though. Other than Stewart they are all role players that every club has.

Your stars have been Hawkins (free consensus pick 1, must be nice), Cameron (already a coleman medallist, traded in dirt cheap), Danger (already top 5 in the league, traded in dirt cheap), Selwood (you actually drafted him, well done).

It just depends what level of rebuild they want. Geelong didn’t go off the cliff, and probably won’t, because they can recruit people for the lifestyle (and cheap land deals).
On the other hand you have North, who have gone big…. But that comes at a price… this year will be ugly.

I think the nature of Melbournes finals defeat to us will either make them or break them.

Next year will tell us more about where the Dees are really at imo.

Dees fans have got their memories of 2021 in fairness, but i'm sure they badly want to experience a grand final win at the G.

More parody than satire
Whatever its amusing that a Saints fan with their tragic history having a crack at how successful clubs are managed
St Kilda and the words successful football club.:grinv1: An oxymoron if ever there was one!:laughv1:

Also what kind of cliff are we expecting for the Mighty Cats? There's different tiers, with Hawthorn's decade long stint in the abyss and hitting every possible branch on the way down definitely ranked amongst the funniest ways to decline.
When did we have a decade long stint in the abyss? We have made the finals for five years at the moment and the last time we missed finals for more than five years was the 60s so decade in the abyss seems a bit of an exaggeration?

In the last decade hawthorn have had 2 flags and 2 other top 4 finishes. How exactly is that the abyss?

How many flags does Geelong have in the last decade?

Haven't won a solitary final since 2015. It's not Essendon levels of impressive but it's still worthy of celebration.

This is strange logic. It's almost like Taranto and Hopper were failures. We traded in a very good player who went top 15 in coaches votes and Brownlow. He was 7th in the coaches votes after 18 rounds and faded a bit from carrying the rest. Not likely to get that very often with a picks 12 or 19, (16 and 21 in the final draft), especially in the early years of their careers. Hopper has been injured for the last few years, better this year but hasn't had a full preseason in a while so let's see how he goes this year. He is a quality player with a B&F to his credit.

We have a good number of young draft talent from the previous year or two, a few of which didn't get on the park this year due to injury, and 7 picks inside 50 odd for the next draft. Richmond have Prestia and Grimes who are showing signs of age trail off. Martin second half of the season was his best in years. So age right now is not a problem as every team has a few older players on the wane.

Noted. I'll amend my statement to 'Hawthorn's near-decade long stint in the abyss and hitting every possible branch on the way down definitely ranks amongst the funniest ways to decline' and revisit in a couple of years.
Out of curiosity, which club had won the most AFL/VFL flags in your lifetime?

Hopper will always be tied to Curtin now. It will take a while to find out who won that trade, but my money is on Curtin. (and Toby McMullin I think?)

Taranto is a solid B+ player and on his good days Hopper is B. Clubs need these types.

3rd in 2016 and 4th in 2018 at end of home and away. That probably counts as an abyss for Hawthorn with our 11 premierships in 50 years but is actually pretty good compared to many clubs.
