Tom Fitzmaurice started as a ruckman but went to CHB and won the Champion of the Colony twice.

TD played both ends and Buttsworth was a CHB and won the B&F three times.

Harvs was a star CHB, Wanganeen won a Brownlow and Bomber Thompson was a Premiership captain.

Then there's Fletch.

Wanganeen was the best I've seen, followed by Fletch.

If you go on stats, rankings in the Champions of Essendon etc, it's Fitzmaurice.

Fletcher and Wellman are probably the best i've seen.
Though i didnt start watching till early 90's

I guess bomber and harvey were pretty handy too but didnt see too much of them.

I also loved Hardwick and MJ's hardness and tenacity.:thumbsu:

Toughness and no fear - Billy Duckworth
Amazing career and player - Fletcher
Rubber man and genius - Wanganeen

Go with Fletcher.:thumbsu:

Fletcher best of those seen.

Names like Buttsworth, Harold Lambert, Norm Mcdonald and "Bluey" Shelton up amongst the all-timers though.

This is the age old question Fletcher, Wanga, Wellman have been great players in recent times

Barry Davis was a brilliant footballer . He with Shelton and Alex Epis were outstanding in the 60's and 70's.

Sadly Davis left Essendon and captained the Kangas to their first premiership and he had a lazy 40 possessions in the GF as a ruck rover - pure quality like James Hird.

Since the late 70s it's Fletch for me but Anthony Daniher was a very underrated full back. So was Paul Weston although I rate A.Daniher ahead of him.

N.Daniher was great off half back, Bomber Thompson steady and reliable. Wanga, Foulds, Wellman, O'Donnell and Vanda was good the few times he played CHB.

Some of the older posters may include Geoff Pryor.

Fletcher is a freak, but so was Wanga. Probably between those two, out of the players I've seen live. Foulds (was my fave player back then), Terry & Anthony Daniher, Wellman & Bomber Thompson were all very handy in their respective roles. Throw in Billy Duckworth & Harvey for their courage!

Fletcher and Daniher are the best I've seen if we're talking strictly of full backs.

O'Donnell, Wanganeen, Harvey, Wellman, Grenvold, Ezard, Baker, Weston, Duckworth off the half back line.

Going out on a limb here, but in 10 years time, we'll be talking much about the Pears and Hooker combination. They seem to have a good understanding on one another and don't be surprised to see them both on the cover of a Bomber magazine within the next 12 months.
