Why can't Adelaide retain players?

Considering they had more vic players than Richmond in their gf team therein lies the answer.

I know SA players have left, but if the core was more south Australian the issue wouldn’t be as great.

Mind you we lost Betts cos he wanted to be with his dad in SA, Scott Thompson became a club legend leaving melb, and other such as Greg Anderson, Tony hall and Toby mcguinness moved over in the early days.

Do Port have the same issues? I can think of many leaving them
You lost Betts because you offered him bugger all. He said in an interview that Carlton offered him a tiny 2 year contract, but that he would have stayed if they upped their offer another $50k (which would have still been significantly below Adelaide’s offer).

I think Adelaide need to put more work into the families of their players. I know from a couple of interviews with Boakies mum and Ollie Wines’ mum that Port do a lot for the families of the players, helping them get to games and ensuring younger siblings are well looked after. Not sure if Adelaide do much work in this regard.
Adelaide brought over Lever’s brother and played him in the Crows SANFL team.

Craig Kelly, player manager and father of Crows player Jake Kelly, has been glowing in his comments about how Adelaide has treated his son.

Why don't Adelaide just look at hometown talent? Or is the talent spread not there?
The best talent coming through generally finishes up being drafted before either of Adelaide clubs pick. Similar scenario for the WA clubs. The preferred choice for first round picks is generally taking the best player available.

Then Melbourne drove a dump truck full of money to his house and he changed his mind.

Yep.

And I don't really blame him. Going to channel 7 to break the news instead of the club probably wasnt the brightest idea.

But for people to suggest us turning 300-600k players in to players other clubs are willing to pay a million for is somehow an endightment on our club is laughable. Our sport has a salary cap. We are trying to build a team that can win a premiership. Paying 6 million to keep those 6 played and spreading the remaining 6 million over the other 38 players just isn't feasible or the way to create the right environment.

All recent great clubs like Hawks and Geelong have said players need to take cuts to stay together. We have had a few willing to do that. And a few that have valued Money over success.

I cant think off the top of my head......surely there are or were players who wanted to go home to SA who plied their trade in non SA states before? Same same?

Graham Cornes interview on SEN was pretty good, frank and honest. He mentioned that he would not have played Lever if he was Pyke (easy to say when you're not the coach). But it was raised that Sloan may be in the same position next year Cornes said he would play RS BUT only if he was honest and announced his intentions early
Not playing Lever means that, in the future, players intending to leave the club will just lie about wanting to stay as they know that they will get dropped if they tell the truth. That puts the recruiting team in a worse position. It also puts the actual team in a worse position as the Crows would have been a worse team without Lever playing in the finals.

Been tried before, it's how West coast ended up picking the Perth born Chris Masten instead of Rance, Tarrant, Rioli or Dangerfield.

correct weight WTF. Dont you love the holier than thou attitude oh we not gonna play him cause he not wanna sign a contract blah blah

Not in the last couple of games he played for us. His mind was clearly elsewhere. Leaving him out of the GF would have benefited us as he performed poorly, sent a message to others and been justified imo.

If the Crows just picked SA players then we’d finish in the bottom 4 every year. There just aren’t that many top-level SA players compared to the rest of Australia put together.

On top of that, if the Crows just picked SA kids, what happens when they have pick 5, but the best SA kid gets taken at pick 4? The second best SA kid could be only worth around pick 20, which would be a terrible use of a top 5 pick.

Yeah, the message would have been “If you want to leave then it’s in your best interests to lie to us about it, otherwise we’ll drop you.”

For On ground performance on GF day? Sure. But not for the retention of players. Look at my posts above as to the real reason we "Can't retain" players. Basically it's a problem of our own making. Our culture turns 300-600k players into players other clubs are willing to pay a million a yr.

When you have a salary cap of 12 million for the team and lose 6 players that 6 other clubs are paying a million a yr, surely you can see how we couldn't build a team with spending 6 million on 6 players and 6 million on 38 other players lol. It's just not feasible.
It is just a theory. Only the players themselves will know the truths. Its pretty dam difficult satisfying every young player with talent given all the personalities, egos and testosterone. Port have suffered on the opposite spectrum - keeping all the playing group together and backing them in. That has not worked. Wished some players left to change the mix - but of course the right ones

Just keep picking the best players and get the right compensation.

It hasn't hurt your club to the point where they weren't competitive.
Thats exactly right. Due to the draft and compensation setup, players will generate a roi dependent on the output or potential. As long as we keep getting the best out of the players we draft then we will at least maintain parity

Lost Davis and Bock to new teams for money.
Lost Gunston as he was a mummy's boy.
Kept Danger for 7 years.
Lever another mummy's boy.
So I think we are just drafting the wrong players. Need to draft more Sa players and players with good character.

Add Scott Thompson the mummy's boy to the list

Well sounds like trengrove is gone last I heard so you might get what you want now anyway? And sounds like they are in the box seat for motlop and rockliff, good pick-ups potentially imo. Although rockliff is supposedly looking for 700k now and could have been picked up last yr for probably 450k- something I wanted us to do. Insanity that no one wanted him last yr now he's worth 700k.

Ports trade period is looking quite promising imo. Crows should be getting in on the action since we have a big name wanting to leave and a lot of other clubs looking to get deals done. Even if lever is just used as a player to get a player to another club in a complex deal, we should be able to use it to our advantage.

Recent Previous history shows the Crows aren't great at thinking outside the square to get the deal done tho.

45 players on our list mate.

Name 1 Star that has left in the last 10 years.

Maybe your club should start copying us, you would probably have a premiership right now if you did.

No stars left, yet you still cant beat a top 8 side...

Port have 140+ years history, club rooms, a culture.
Adelaide are a manufactured franchise.

I’m not trolling that’s genuinely probably the reason they can’t retain players.

When interstate players come to port I have heard port make sure they do everything possible to make the family feel welcome as well. Ollie wines family are at most games/functions since coming here. They are just as much as part of the footy club as Ollie is. It’s simple, keep the players happy in a good culture and you won’t have any issues.

Every club does the same. That is far from a unique case.

Why would a victorian give a crap about your 140+ year history? Serious question...

No he wanted you to match what he had already been offered elsewhere. What you pay other players isn't relevant.
Derp.
Of course its relevant.

What is the best way to piss off your core of experienced guns. Pay some mercenary $1m a year to fist the ball

I haven't heard many list managers publicly under cut a players claim they are going home for family reasons

Well if it was family reasons he wouldn't nominate a club.
He's going for the money plain and simple. Good on the club for calling him on his bullshit.

Also good on Melbourne for paying him $1m per year...idiots.

Every single team does this.
Players have raved about how well the AFC has treated them and their families.

Please dont think this is a unique thing to the Powah
