Simple question... and why is it when we play them we get bad injuries and all hell breaks loose...

i find it quite bizarre.. the grand was years ago.. and we're here years later unable to beat them....

They've always been the favourites and the team in better form, so they should be winning games against us.

I'll only be concerned if we're the in-form team and can't beat them.

It frustrates me to the point of tears ..... not many things in life do that.

The upside is that it will turn eventually ..... oh yes ..... and the victory will be so sweet!

They really do just seem to want it more than us, ever since we 'stole' that 08 flag from them. Even when we have a decent lead they just will not lie down and accept defeat. A few games with bad injuries to us hasn't helped either...

I agree with that, they have been the inform team in most encounters of late and should have won. I don't think they are our "bogey" side, just a team in better form of late.

Probably the reason we did beat them in the GF... form counts for much less on the big stage.

I cannot express how much I hate it, but then I cannot express how I felt on that sunny September day in 2008 when we last beat them, and if we get the chance this September/October and we manage to beat them again all these disappointments from the last 6 encounters will quickly be replaced by a euphoria that I wont be able to describe either :thumbsu:

Keep the faith and remember R17 2008. On that day we knew we were not far away. Ottens, Milburn, Corey, Ling, Scarlett and co are not going to improve between now and finals. Savage, Shiels, Suckling, Smith, Schoe, Breust, Lisle etc. are all going to improve plenty.

This is not over.

Because they want to beat us more than we want to beat them, it's that simple. The excuse of form etc I don't buy it, the results have been close enough to suggest we can win but we don't. If they beat us comprehensively by 4+ goals I'd say sure they are clearly the better side, but that's just not the case.
We have a mental block that stops us from winning against them, it really is as simple as that. The players have to collectively want to win against them otherwise we won't for a long time to come.

Going back not that many years ago, I can remember beating Geelong in a final at the Dome and hearing Cats supporters asking why they could never beat us?

It's now our turn to ask the same question.

I suspect the answer right now is because of several things including:
They are a better side than us.
They are more mature and have bigger bodies
They are more composed under pressure
They also probably have a greater mental strength, or maybe this just comes from age and experience.

They are having a tremendous run with list management right now and have not been hurt the same way we have. A little bit of luck and we will get them.

Dont forget the sh%*house umpiring like give them the first couple goals via pod that they were both holding onto each other. And why the hell was Franklin in the centre square when he is a bloody forward? lol They have more older players and defenders like Scarlet that keep their head cool. Oh and they have great ducking players that go in ducking like chapman and duckwood and they come out with the frees.. Theres plenty of reasons. The game on Saturday was very similiar to the final game last year against the cats. Both games should have really gone to us. Luck has a great role in this as well. They can go either way, toss of a coin! Oh and did I mention the 12/1 free kicks in the first quarter?

Hello, haven't dropped by for a while, so just thought I would pop in to see how the board is going following Saturday's disappointing game (in terms of injuries I think, more so than the result).

As an earlier poster mentioned - every time we have played the Pussies since the glorious '08 GF victory, they have been placed higher on the ladder, in much better form, and fielded a much stronger team than us. From memory, the first time we met them in 2009 H&A I think we fielded 3 debutants and only got beaten by less than 10 points.

So it would be expected that they should beat us. Indeed, if we had managed to win on Saturday night no doubt the rest of the football world would have labelled us as "stealing" the game!

What I would be concerned about is if Geelong were beating us whilst placed lower on the ladder, but that's not the case.

Actually, considering the fact that we had a much less experienced team, were coming off a shaky win over Freo the week before, playing the top of the ladder undefeated team, in fact the (self-proclaimed) greatest team of all time, with J-Pod having a field day, a dubious lop-sided free-kick count, finishing with only 17 fit players and not even managing to trouble the scorers in the final term......we had no right to even get within 5 points! Perhaps Geelong should be asking why they can't put us away when they repeatedly have us on the ropes?

Anyway, I'm a glass half-full sort of guy.

On another note, looking at our injury list we will only have a maximum of 9 of our 2008 premiership 22 players available for selection this weekend. It's time we stopped harking back to the past perhaps - the Hawks 2008 GF team has been regenerated and I actually like the way we're looking now.

I just noticed the Geelong injury report for the week:

GEELONG

INJURED:
David Wojinski (soreness) test
Mark Blake (finger) 5-7 weeks

Blake isnt even in their starting 22 and Wojinski was rested at the weekend.
Considering our growing injury list, we would do Ok with the same level of personnel available as Geelong had on the weekend.

The Question should be 'Why can't Geelong beat Hawthorn in a Grand Final?????

Come Finals time the pussycats will bring out the handbags and fall over when they play us in the Final......... They are mentally weak when they play the Hawks in finals, they are due for a loss against us and i cannot wait when we meet them in the finals.......bring it on baby....
