Will Collingwood win the flag?

You beat us by one point in our worst effort of the year after a four day break. Yes I realise you had a four day break as well but let's face it, Port at Etihad is basically a training drill. You also had the rub of the green from the umpires. And we still managed to grab the lead with a couple of minutes to go. It was hardly a convincing victory and neither was last night.

it was a tough, hard-fought victory over a team that has looked amazing in several matches and very ordinary in others (didn't essendon almost lose to port at etihad? :D).

results, efforts and performances of teams have fluctuated wildly early this season. i'm amazed that people actually think they can pick the form lines at this point of the season, so much so that they can shit-can the suggestion that collingwood, the 2010 premiers who are sitting on 6-2 with plenty of players injured/underdone, might win the flag.

We only beat them by slightly less at etihad then you guys did...

Let's talk about unconvincing form.

Bombers season so far:

Round 1: North had a shot after the siren to win the game but choked.
Round 2: Very uninspiring performance against Port at Etihad.
Round 3: Limped across the line against the winless Gold Coast.
Round 4: Comprehensive victory against the flag favourites. Massive kudos.
Round 5: Very close loss against Collingwood, but were outplayed all day, Collingwood just lacked the polish to put the game away.
Round 6: Easy win against Brisbane at Etihad who are just crap.
Round 7: Impressive victory over undefeated West Coast at Etihad, albeit an injury ravaged West Coast.

Overall, definitely one of the form sides of the competition. But let's face it, no team has been convincing so far. That's why the season is so wide open!

With a fully fit side, I'll still back us to beat anybody on our day, as I'm sure Hawks, Blues, Cats, Eagles, Dockers, Crows and Bomber fans would all do for their side! Will be an interesting year, but still early days yet!

lol you do realise the free kick count was 17-10 in your favour on Anzac Day right? I wouldn't call that as Collingwood having the "rub of the green".

We also didn't have Tarrant, Reid, Thomas, Shaw and Didak available in that game.

All in all for the OP, I think we are gradually building and considering how unsettled we have been all year, we have done really well to keep our season on track.

I think GWS is the only team to have played more players than us all year.

Fasolo, Tarrant, Krakouer, Didak, Blair, Ball, Thomas, Brown, Jolly, Reid, Wellingham, Johnson, Macaffer, Dawes, Shaw and Swan will all have missed games this season with the bold ones missing major chunks and consecutive games. No doubt Swan will be added this week to the bold ones with his hammy injury too.

The first point of call for supporters when a game is lost narrowly is to say 'we didn't play that well.' If that makes you feel better about the loss when the Pies were ripe for the picking, then fine. The simple fact is, that for the majority of the match, you weren't allowed to play well. Real and inferred pressure brought you undone. Both sides had players out but according to most, the Pies' outs were more significant than Essendon's.

As long as the grand final is played at the G this year (which it is every year forever) and the pies make it then i'd have to say they'd go in favourites against any side. If we look at the potential contenders the only side i have as more talented when their best 22 is playing is hawthorn and we all know how much they like to choke in big games.

Essendon as a team just dont have the big game or finals experience, carlton are unproven and when the going gets tough they still havent shown they can pull through.

West coast and the Crows both have serious question marks over them. The eagles with injuries and a tough draw from here on in and the crows are again untested in finals.

Fremantle are fremantle and it seems to me they are going to struggle to kick a competitive score coupled with the fact their new coach has them playing a gamestyle completely different to how they've played in the past.

Sydney and St Kilda whilst having the ability to play some very good football i just dont think are good enough or consistant enough to win 3 consecutive finals against contenders.

That and geelong while they seem to get up and about against top sides have lost their aura of invincibility, seem to have lost a bit of pace through their older players and are now 4-4. They can still make it but at this stage they need to focus on making the 8 rather than defending their flag.

Looking at all the above things its hard to not have collingwood as flag favourites at this stage. Essendon have been very impressive in some games (they blew us out of the water and everything went right in that game) but they have also been lucky or unimpressive in others.

My current flag favouritism would go like this.
Collingwood

Essendon
Hawthorn
West Coast
Carlton
Adelaide

Fremantle
Sydney
St kilda
Geelong

For essendon if stanton and zaharakis can have big games against another top side then they will move up into the top category with collingwood and if adelaide can beat a top victorian side in melbourne they will too.

For west coast to be a genuine contender they need to prove they can beat quality sides even with our very large injury list and need to prove we have enough avenues towards goal.

The hawks have to shut down a quality forward line and win a tight one against a quality side.

Carlton need consistancy all across the field and to make a run of beating sides they have traditionally struggled with.

Those below them would need to do a hell of a lot to move into my top 6 but i can easily see a couple of those sides falling out of it.

great post mate but it has nothing to do with my point.

that point being; why is a narrow victory over port at etihad seen as indicative of collingwood's poor form, yet essendon's even narrower victory is not?

I think you will find most Essendon supporters were not happy with that game. Perhaps in mainstream media but most of us were slightly embarrassed.

Maybe just maybe Collingwood fans felt the same after there's as well?? Or is the thought of another set of fans thinking they can do better as well be too mind blowing......

Yep. They beat an out of form Geelong, whom Adelaide and North have both managed to knock over, by two goals. Give them the flag now.

hmmm so lets try an justify essendon fans calling for them to be favourites. They beat a carlton where two of their better players were down being yarran and carazzo. Yes i know we werent that flash hot against them but realy we have learnt recently that the blues arent that great. You seemed to do a great job beating us when we had Ball, krackouer, thomas, shaw, reid, tarrant, macaffer and didak out. Yes thats right you couldnt even beat us when we were at our absolute lowest. Oh but wait you guys had Lovett- murray, hurley, dempsey and hibberd out so i guess thats ok.
Oh and wait i almost forgot you guys had a terrific victory over Richmond. A team that has barely reached the 8 for 30 years. But no they were realy big premiership contenders after beating port by 8 goals. And a terrific victory over the suns on the road cleaning them up by a solid 10 points. Hmmm i might stop there.

Yeah how about you focuss on your own fans getting ahead of themselves before you go tryna hate on the pies. K thanks bud.

Collingwood should win comfortably tonight.

They have the wood over Adelaide and AAMI is their second home.

Expect them to be flag favourites with the bookies after tonight.

If we don't lose by more than 4 goals I would say look the f#ck out rest of competition when finals come around and if we have our boys injury free.

wow you have no idea mate. They will be missing Swan and a swanless collingwood in adelaide says to me Crows by atleast 10 goals. They are a very different side..cant go on past results as you would of learnt today

Wellingham will step up and fill Swan's shoes.

Collingwood won by 15 goals and Wellingham had 37 disposals in the last game that Swan didn't play.
