It's interesting people only look at those we're bringing in. Personally I'm at least as excited by the prospect of having a season not completely destroyed by injuries. Having some of Duncan, Clark, Menzel, Stanley, Bartel, Vardy, Cowan and McCarthy not have their years ruined would be a decent start. That should be as important as the trades.

Not sold on their depth yet but they've made big leaps in addressing this, particularly midfield depth, this trade period and if they stay relatively injury free I think they can push for top 4. Have the forwards and the backs and their best 22 looks very strong on paper. Duncan elevating his game to the elite bracket is critical, Selwood and Dangerfield have shown they can dominate consistently and as good as his best games are, Duncan hasn't quite put it all together yet. Any team with three gun mids poses a serious headache when they have the forwards to capitalise.

That said, don't think they'll be a "serious" premiership threat but if they earn a top 4 berth then who knows.

Yes, but everything has to go right for them.

This time last year no-one would've thought West Coast would be in the GF.

every club gets injuries but the top 4 teams cope with them better, so all other 12 teams are sort of in the same boat but if you have a group of injury prone players like Geelong you need greater depth

Injuries affect club performance? Thanks for this excellent insight!

Even injury prone players sometimes get their bodies right so who knows.

And it is, everyone goes on about the trades. We were going to be (should) a better side regardless.
Up to half our side will be different, younger and better.

Oh sorry youre more worried about the age profile than the quality of the player! Good luck with that!

Enright = 5 times All Australian (last in 2013)
Taylor = 2 times All Australian (short listed in 2014)
Mackie= 1 time All Australina (2013)
Lonergan = All Australian short listed in 2014
Thurlow = Rising star nomination in 2015
Guthrie = 5th in the B&F in 2015

So yeah I am more more worried about the age profile than the quality. As far as I am concerned the quality of the individuals is beyond reproach, the concerns are more about whether they can continue to play at the standards they've consistently shown throughout their careers or whether father time catch up with them, it's a bit different with Thurlow, he's got to continue to progress but as far as the others go........the quality was proven a loooong time ago.

I think they're on the decline ... Danger is a freak and they'll be competitive but I think it will be quite a while until they are contending again. They don't have the real quality youth, in part because they haven't had the picks

They would want to be. Their list is going to be horrible from 2017 or so. Will be lucky to have 27 or 28 AFL capable players by then given the lack of quality youth that will be coming through at that stage.

Umm haven't you got a lot of injury prone players and limited depth. How do you think that will affect your year?
Depends on your definition of "injury prone".

Some footballers carry an injury for a long period before undergoing surgery, Scott Selwood. Does the one injury equate to injury prone?

Mitch Duncan suffered a serious foot injury. It was a freak injury. Does that make him injury prone? Until 2015 he had been virtually injury free.

Granted, the likes of McIntosh (now retired), Vardy and Clark appear to be injury prone. And Menzel has just been plain unlucky. I don't know if he is physiologically more susceptible to injury than your average footballer. 4 knee recos would suggest yes.

But let's not confuse management of an injury with being injury prone. All AFL footballers are at risk of being injured.

You guys worried about 'quality youth' seen many Geelong games?

This is the first time Geelong have traded away their first pick for many moons - yet other clubs have done it for years on end.

Have a think about what your saying before posting.

The high quality of some of our young players doesn't fit the narrative, so people choose to ignore it.

We've seen enormous potential from many of the under 23's at Geelong, but so far none have backed it up with consistent performance. So instead of focusing on the high quality patches of football they have produced, or the enormous potential they have shown, people choose to just dismiss them.

It's mostly based in frustration that Geelong aren't going away, so instead of accepting that, people are fighting it. They think if they argue "the Geelong youth is no good" it might come true. (Either that or they can't judge talent)

They'll be proven wrong in the next few years, we just have to wait.

From 2017 or so, the only likely retirees are Enright, Lonergan, Bartel and Mackie. With our current list only Enright is guaranteed best 22, with guys like Kolo, Thurlow, Henderson pushing the other guys out of the backline. So whilst you post was indeed a cool story, it isn't based on facts.

Just because Geelong doesn't have any early picks in a single draft does not mean we all of a sudden have no talented youth. Look at any trade period for any club over the past 5 years, very rarely do they get more than a single decent player per club after pick 10.

The fact is we had the most Rising Star nominations of any team in the competition this year with Gregson, Thurlow and Lang all getting the nod, and guys like Kolo and Cockatoo getting close as well. Our oldest midfielder is Selwood with guys like Guthrie, Duncan, Caddy, Blicavs and Motlop all 24 and under. The only 'old' part about our team is our defence, but bringing in Henderson and getting games into Thurlow, Kolodjashnij and Bews is preparation for when those older guys move on.

This whole 'youth' argument is continually repeated by those clueless flogs who haven't seen us play since 2011 and realised that most of our list has been turned over. The fact we've been playing finals up until this year was more a slight on the rest of the competition for being so poor that we were still finishing top 4 while rebuilding.
