Will/Should clubs raid Richmond's list?

I think there's a few more than just those 4 but you're not far off the mark. Players like Rioli, Graham, Astbury, Vlastuin, Grimes are more than just role players but your point is still valid for a majority of our team.

Would players such as Butler, Castagna, Townsend even Lambert get a game at another decent team? They would if the game plan was built around defensive pressure and hard up and down running but certainly not because of their skills alone.

Good thread.
Reckon Butler would walk into any side's 22. Classy finisher, hard worker defensively and extreme pace.

Possibly - but only as a tactical measure to ensure Richmond don’t snag another flag.

Anyone who knows anything about football will tell you that the Tigers’ list is full of spuds. However - through structure/game-plan/unexplainable sorcery, said list won a premiership. Surely removing any singular player from this environment would not only expose them for their complete inability, but would also break up that working Richmond system.

If each club targets just 1 or 2 players (purely to run around in their seconds), any chance of continued Richmond success is nullified.
Can confirm it doesn't work. We've been trying that on GWS for years.

Charles Trevelyan is sniffing around already.

They may well do with us. They'd compete with Daniel Loyyd, Zac Langdon and Sam Reid for a spot.

Dont know why no one picked up Miles, a team like essendon could really use a ball magnet like him

We have a couple of exciting youngsters coming through in Balta, Naish, Menadue, Rioli, Markov, Higgins that we would be very keen to hang on to. None of them bar rioli are really forwards, and from what weve heard he will become more of a wing than a forward in the future. Higgins will eventually be a mid and should be a decent one at the very least. The others ive listed are pretty versatile and can be thrown around the ground a bit which is invaluable.

Got a feeling Bolton may head home and guys like Conca and C Ellis may be shipped out.

We have much better depth than years gone past, its exciting but we still rely on the 4 guns plus Vlastuin, Astbury, Grimes, Lambo, Nank to fire in order to win games

From the names mentioned:

Edwards
Caddy
Rioli
Lambert
Graham
Butler
Castagna
Short ------- above are all best 22 and playing regularly (Rioli injured)

Menadue - wing/back - is ready and waiting
Bolton - small forward - played 2 out of 3
Higgins - draftee '17 - small forward - played 1at game
Stengle - second year small forward - rookie
Chol - ruck / forward - developing
Moore - tall forward - developing - rookie
Balta - draftee '17 - tall forward - room to play now - starred at CHB last week
Naish - draftee '17 - skinny wingman
Baker - draftee '17 - forward/mid
Drummond - 2 knee reco's - fit finally - wingman

All under 21 and are getting games or not far off

C.Ellis
Townsend
Miles
Lloyd

Apart from Townsend who has done well but is possible short term, the bolded may be getting a bit edgy about playing more,
the rest are young or on the edge/out of favour.
Not that much to chose from unless bolded guys in the middle table get little game time this year.

Snipper is a bit one dimensional - good clearance/inside but his two way running is his biggest flaw. Given the way we defend it’s the reason he’s not getting a game IMO. Would get a game in a side that doesn’t rely on a defensive structure like ours. Good player, just not suited to our current style of play.

Miles is the really interesting one. He consistently gets BOG at VFL level, and he has shown he can cut it at AFL level. He only misses out because he doesn't have the required forward skills that our midfielders need.

For another club, he'd slot in nicely as a 4th-5th midfielder that can rack up 20+ touches a week and a handful of clearances, and he would not cost much in salary or trade value.

I’d say Stengle and Menadue are the pick of our young players not getting a game at the moment. Both rated highly internally just about breaking into the side and cementing a spot. If they’re not getting games by the end of the year they could be gettable

After Buddy left, it helped the Hawks keep their list together.

We strategically traded Savage to the Saints and Anderson to North, not wanting to see either player go based on talent.

Cheeney was squeezed out. Lack of opportunity. But highly respected and valued.

The biggest loss due to salary cap was probably only Suckling.

Brad Hill going home to W.A has really hurt, but by then the window was closed.

The Martin contract at Richmond is probably not unlike what it would have cost the Hawks to keep Buddy if he chose to stay.

To reverse the question...

After winning the flag, many of those players might demand pay rises which would stretch the salary cap of Richmond.

How many will Richmond have to trade?

We saw the Hawks lose McGlynn and Kennedy, Cats lost Christensen and Varcoe, Swans lost Mumford and T Mitchell, Bulldogs lost Hamling and Stringer etc

What would be a realistic offer for Dusty? Doubt any team would do it, but if someone offered 3 first rounders, you'd have to do it.
So you'd trade a genuine superstar and someone that may become the clubs greatest ever player for 3 kids that havent played a AFL game?
I wouldnt do it.
I would only trade Dusty for Danger, Fyfe or Buddy (if he was 3 years younger)
