They could have had Daicos and that pick 2 this year.
I wonder how many players Hawks would have traded for a Daicos and pick 2 with the players they had tried to move on.

All in all I see what Collingwood tried to do, last season and this. Sometimes you have to play the cards you get dealt.
You don’t seriously believe this, do you?

Winner: Carlton
Cerra and Hewitt for a net loss of realistically only pick 6, is good business. Readies them for next year. Amazingly managed salary cap given the ability to add several players while lists and TPP are contracting.

2nd place Fremantle
In: Pick 6, 19, Clark, Brodie, 61, 69, Geelong Future 4th
Out: Cerra, pick 27, Future 2nd, 3rd, 4th
Used the free salary cap space created by Cerra to essentially buy picks off Gold Coast which is good business, got two players Brodie and Clark who should offset the loss of Cerra a little. Have a top 3 draft hand heading into the draft despite finishing 11th.

Last: Sydney
Lost Dawson for unders, lost Hewitt for free. Downgraded their first rounder, offset slightly by adding Ladhams. Ladhams only really keeps them level field as Hickey declines. I’d be annoyed as a Sydney supporter. Fortunately have the academy to absorb these small losses and rebound quickly.

2nd last: Gold Coast
Only 1 pick this year, adding numerous late selections next year. Freeing up salary space for a list that didn’t perform too well, screams of over payment to keep players. Which is well recognized but must be frustrating.
To the contrary I think most Suns supporters should be pretty happy with the trade period.

- We had no one request a trade which for us is a W

- we only have 3 list spots to use this year and have committed to taking two academy guys so really, the only pick we were going to use was 3 anyway. In 2022 we now have 1x 1rp (GC), 3x 2rp (GC, Fre, Coll), 2x 3rp (GC, Coll), and 2x 4rp (Fre, Coll) which gives us so much to work with.

- We moved on Brodie's back ended salary which gives us 400 - 600k to use on re-signing guys throughout this season.

- We brought in Chol who isn't a world beater but is a solid, AFL quality ruck/forward for relatively cheap. Important given this year we lost Witts, Day and our developing ruckman Conroy did his ACL as well and had to play with an undersized KPF and an undersized KPD in Burgess and Graham as our rucks for the whole season after round 3.

If North don’t bid on Daicos, then they hand Collingwood Callaghan (?), then Suns bid Daicos, and Collingwood pay in picks for Daicos. It would be very very likely they get two top 3 selections. Would North hand Collingwood such a big favour? Certainly plausible.

No club would. And rightly so, I might add.

There is a precedent, a bit different, but I recall a dubious trade, that lead to Jack Viney being recruited with a pick in the 20s instead of 3(?).

If Collingwood had offered North a future 1st round pick, to swap 2 for 1, and suggested they would draft a Victorian instead of JHF, under the table agreement. That would work.

There is just no planet that North would have let Collingwood make an open selection and then take Daicos. Foolishness to suggest otherwise

I think Cerra is fine. Not sure about him being a star. But with where Carlton is at, could a Mitchell in the midfield and a potential young gun at pick 6, with more cap space be a better option for them? I think Mitchell is better than Cerra right now. Maybe will be for the next 2 or 3 years. In that time, they have another top draft pick with 3 years under his belt. And that cap saving could be invaluable to bring another player in next season.

Just another opinion which I think makes sense.

The probability of Pick 6 being better than Cerra isn't great. Why recruit in hope that 3 years from now you might have a decent player, when you can just get a decent player now.

Mitchell turns 29yo next season. Not at all the right age bracket.

Carlton needs quality players who will be along for the ride with Wietering, Harry, Walsh etc. Cerra at 22yo is ready to roll and a much better option.

I'm sure they would have come to some agreement where Collingwood trade in a hack like Atley for a 2nd round pick

0 chance North would let them take a live selection before Daicos.

However they could’ve traded it for more than the two mid second rounders.

Surprised how few have mentioned St.Kilda as losers this period.
Been trading the last couple of years as if they're in the window.

Target support for Ryder and Marshall... Don't get it.
Get rid of an 11 brownlow vote Dunstan. The premiers were more than happy to snap him up.

Didn't trade anything in for the now.
But have a weak draft hand. 9, 62, 66, 67, 85

Probably a couple years away from contending yet has a list profile that should be challenging now.
7 over 30 and their better players are by and large 26-30.

North would of observed what crows did last season did nothing to deter dogs with their draft. If pies did have 2 It would be a bigger factor but I think North would still wouldn't bid because They're in a different spot than crows were. North need to sell that the no.1 in the draft is theirs to their supporters because they're in a worse spot than crows were with all that has happened with North the last couple of years.

Why on earth would the Roos be deterred by us bidding last year? It did exactly as it was intended to do, made sure you paid the absolute maximum for a pretty talented kid and removed some risk in the later stages of the draft, seeing the Dogs weren't passing on JUH. North will do the same to Collingwood because there is no chance Collingwood says no, so you might as well hurt the rest of their draft.

They're in close to the same spot we were last year as well. Potentially a tad more advanced seeing they've been treading water for longer than us prior to starting.

No one in the footy industry aside from biased one eyed Pies fans rates Daicos ahead of Horne-Francis.
I am very confident to state here and now that Horne-Francis will have a better career than Nick Daicos.

Doesn't actually matter who goes number 1 really at this stage, right now Thilthorpe from the Crows showed more promise/potential than JUH on last's form at AFL level, but eventually I am fairly sure Ugle-Hagan will be a better player than him.

Daicos was only ever going to the Pies anyway, and really North have very little to gain by picking him at 1 anyway, especially if they want Horne-Francis to stay beyond 2 years.
No need to keep trolling the pies when Both clubs get great young players. North get a exciting Dangerfield clone type while the Pies get a player with Gary Ablett jr footy IQ and skills falling out of his arse. So in the end everyone would be picking Horne-Francis, Daicos and fremantles pick 6 to have a better career than cerra.

This is always a hilarious thread.
In trade thread: "player X is not worth any more than pick Y! If anything, we're overpaying!"
In this thread: "we're the winner, because we only paid pick Y for player X! What a bargain!"

I'm looking at you Carlton supporters and Adam Cerra.

Well maybe, but the point several posters and footy pundits have expressed about why North should bid on Daicos at pick 1 have been frivolous (at best)

I never once said Daicos would be a draft bust or dud (from all widely speculated and respected draft watchers, he potentially could be better than his old man, whom imo was the greatest Collingwood player I have watched in my life time, yes better than Bucks and Pendles) so if he lives up to the hype and expectations, Collingwood have an amazing, once in a generation talent on their books.

The thing is, from what I have read and seen on YouTube, and other media outlets, I believe Jason Horne-Francis seemingly has a smudgen more talent and upside to his game.

Just my opinion as a casual footy observer FWIW. And given JHF is a SA boy who has apparently clearly stated he wants to be known as the official number 1 pick in draft class, I think it would be foolish of North not to try upset the apple cart and not pick him at pick 1

Has any Carlton supporter said we got a massive bargain? We recruited the best player available and improved our best 22 considerably but we paid fair value for it.

Weird comment.

It’s way too early declare winners and losers but I’m fairly comfortable with what Collingwood did this year. When you summarise our trade period we brought in Lipinski, Krueger, enough points for Daicos and Dib and upgraded our 2022 4th round pick to a 2022 3rd round pick for the cost of our 2022 second round pick and Max Lynch.

Set our Targets and did them all and without little Fuss

Collingwood are clearly the biggest losers in this draft, missing out on pick 2.
If anything they have since recovered a bit with shrewd trade dealings, and nobody would have guessed where they would have ended up this season.
But still... would anyone be happy missing out on pick 2? It's pick 2!

We would not of Traded that Pick IF we thought we would Finish 2nd Last

It just blows my mind how people think that keeping pick 2 = same scenario. Get over yourselves stop being delusional lol.

Assuming NM genuinely rates Horne as the #1 pick, they would NOT bid on Daicos if there's a chance that we might take Horne over Daicos instead. Instead, they COULD bid in reality since we are 100% guaranteed to match.

Had we kept pick 2, it would've been

1. Horne
2. Callaghan
3. Daicos (match GC bid)
