Working Together To Secure Good Friday

We don't avoid playing footy on holy days that belong to other faiths.

So why shouldn't we play footy on Good Friday?

God is dead.

Precisely my point, the argument that we are predominantly a Christian country is so outdated.

Play the damn game I'm sick of this debate.

Unfortunately for us all we have been brain washed by the media, everything sacred has been commercialized, I can type up a lengthy preach post here, but I won't.

I just think some things should remain sacred, we have lost too much already, and we will loose a lot more, Good Friday should remain sacred, untouched.

Understand your position mate, but we aren't all Christians. In fact Its fair to say that the majority of us probably even aren't religious at all.

We don't take Buddhist holy days off, Islamic holy days off, Jewish holy days off, Scientology holy days off or Hindu Holy days off into account when matches are scheduled do we?

An interesting side issue would be if a player was a Christian and refused to play in a Good Friday match due to religious grounds.

I vaguely recall Joseph Gutnick (I think that was him) who was then President of Melbourne, who IIRC refused to attend any Friday night games due to the Friday being the Jewish Shabbat /Sabbath.

With all due respect SLF, I don't think North Melbourne is a big enough drawer to earn the AFLs go ahead for Good Friday ;

The fact that North is not a big drawing club is completely irrelevant.

I'm supremely confident that there are enough people in Melbourne that find Good Friday so mind numbingly boring, that a game between Box Hill and Frankston could fill the MCG.

I'm supremely confident that you are a shit poster that resorts to trolling and that you have no place in this thread :thumbsu:

Go back to your NM board where you can all talk about L. Hansen and how he has finally transformed into a decent footballer.

Your opinion is irrelevant in here.

Short term, I think our development is ahead of North's so the next season or two might not yield blockbusters. Medium term, however, when our development starts to plateau after consistent top four and perhaps GF appearances, and North rising at our rate now, it could be a golden era of competition and become another great rivalry. Fish and chips with that?

And on the topic of this thread - bring on Good Friday footy, I say.

Many religions have a sacred day that football is played on - why should Christianity be any different?

The days of Australia being a Christian state are well and truly over and if the country is serious about promoting itself as a nation which promotes equality amongst all faiths, football should be played on Good Friday.

Whether North is the best club to do this with is another issue entirely.

Quality post.

Excellent assessment.

Not against other Melbourne teams.

You need a reality check. Watch the North V Retreads game again - the stadium is mostly empty. It's embarrassing. Don't expect 40k to those games, but that pathetic turnout makes the AFL cringe. To make matters worse, North have aleinated their already tiny supporter base, by selling way too many games. Is the idea to get 35k Carlton supporters and 10k North supporters to these "Blockbusters"and then split the gate takings? Trying to use other Clubs success to gloss over your Clubs problems is not the answer. North have to improve attendances, and improve performances, and turnaround their dire off-field situation. Sort that out, and the "Blockbusters" will happen. Don't sort that out and you'll merge with the Dees within 3 years.

:)

o'k i will try and tread carefully here.

I am a religious person but i see no real reason for good friday football to not be played The Celebration of the Passion of the Lord takes place in the afternoon, If the AFL would agree to a night time fixture that would allow for the observation of this ceremony then for mine i see no reason for the AFL to not run an "event" on this day and generate some good will ( and money ) for the Childrens Hospital.

i guess what i am trying to say is
make it a night fixture and make sure some good comes of it ( charity donations ) and i say go for it.

And what if I believe in the sanctity of Good Friday? I think some things should be left sacred and Good Friday is one of them, I will be outvoted of course, but that's my opinion.
Same here, that's why I reserve it for the lap-dancers at the city's various jiggle-bars. We all worship in our own way.

OK, so now try and address SLF's other point about neutral supporters. Sometimes it's a little embarrassing to read the posts of other Blues fans ... do you ever post anything constructive?

The feathered one is a one-beaked, flying propoganda machine......and a handy fisherperson. Often a dash of truth, although turned up to 11 on the exaggerameter, but just enough truth to play on opposition posters anxieties ;)

Carlton have had their share of poor turnouts against interstate clubs in the past. The point is that these one off dates are running out, and sitting there waiting for your attendances to increase will leave you out in the cold.

If it will happen anyway, I have no issue with North getting a shot at it as they have been proactive in seeking out their own special day. They are the ones driving it, we would be cashing in on their proactive approach while they would be cashing in on our drawing power initially. If the attendances aren't there after a couple of attempts, then maybe somebody else gets a go. It is up to the two clubs to make it work.

Not sure how belittling the club when their supporters approach in a good spirit is going to add to the discussion.

Jesus died on the cross for us - So no footy.
Thousands of guys died in numerous wars for us - footy.
To me that is the weird bit.

I'm catholic and would love to see a Good Friday Game.
ANZAC Day Footy has made the day so much better.
I think the game has improved the respect towards ANZAC Day.
I think a Good Friday Game could do the same.

And it wouldnt matter who played. The crowd would come IMO.

Personally, I think it is long overdue.

A Good Friday - Night game between Carlton and Nth would be fantastic.

I see no reason not to play it.

We are a multi-cultural society with many differing religions and faiths.......To say it is a sacred day is rubbish.......It may be sacred to 10% of the population.....

It is an archaic reason to say that it is a religious day and we should be only doing this and that....blah blah blah......

Take your Dogma elsewhere......

The AFL has no ties to religion and therefor I see it as a great opportunity to play the greatest game on earth, in front of a big Friday night crowd at the G!

The game should also be tied into the Children's Hospital appeal, with a % of the proceeds donated and the remaining profits to be split equally between the two clubs.

Special guernsey's could be created for the match, and then auctioned off after with player signatures....that money could also go towards the appeal.

This is a win win for all involved, and those of religious persuasion do not have to watch or go if they choose not to.

As for those that will argue that the players who are religious shouldn't have to play, need to think about it a little harder.

Players are paid employees, and as such are told when they are to work, just like the rest of the population who work on public holidays/weekends/etc.

Its not archaic for many Christians dude.

Show a little bit of tolerance.

I am very tolerant of others and their views.

What I am saying is that for them to then force those views onto others is crap.

Those days are well and truly gone and have no place in modern day society, and in the end.....that is what this is all about.

If people "choose" to celebrate the religious side of the Easter Holiday's...all good, and power to them, but dont tell me I cant watch football because you want to go to church........

Agree with most of that. BUT again the premise of the thread is misguided. You don't create a "Blockbuster" by just creating a media campaign before a game. The Footy Public ain't that stupid. Blockbusters happen when both teams are performing well, and are fighting for a crucial spot in the top-8. I mean, next year if we're 4th, and North are still around 12th, and have sold off more games during the year, do you really think multiple appearances from various Club officials and players in the media the week before is going to make it a "Blockbuster"? It's not. North have got to improve their attendances, relationship with their supporters, and their on-field performances to make it happen. No point sugar-coating the situation. I'd be delighted if it happens, but North have got to improve a lot on many fronts for it to work. That's their challenge. We've done our part.

:)

Ok. tolerance is fine.

We are a secular country though. So why is the whole country stopping for a religious day?

i am not religious, and just because a minority is. doesn't mean that football shouldn't be played.

Previously football wasn't played on sundays either.
