Smell that fear eminating from Jim Main.

Clowns like this are the reason why my interest in Aussie Rules has dwindled to hardly any - if it wasn't for the fact I've been a Port supporter since I was 3 I'd have no interest at all.

Dinosaur's like this clown are falling by the wayside and will drag their game to irrelevance with them because they are still stuck in their insular little world of suburban kickabouts.

As nauseatingly predictable as an article like that is from the ignorant bogan brigade, he's brought up essentially the same points about Australia hosting a World Cup that I've been contesting for months. It would take an unrealistic amount of cooperation between FIFA, the FFA, NRL and AFL for this to come off - fact is, we need (some of) their stadiums for a World Cup. Unless they agree to it it'll never happen. His fears about "tattooed Pommy's going on the rampage" is a load of rubbish, though, seeing as it's a known fact that World Cup's outside of Europe largely go trouble free because there is a significantly smaller number of fans who travel over. International borders, passports and banning orders see to that as well as the sheer cost of it all. But that's not even including the fact that there is no chance Australia will win in 2018 anyway as it will be in England.

Mind you, I certainly would walk across the road to watch an "Italian diving exhibition". So would 40,000 plus other people who have woken up from their caves and realise that the earth is round.

I just wish there was someone in the media who would come out and say what needs to be said to idiots like this. Grow up. For a game that's considers itself one of the toughest on earth the bitchiness that comes from the league, associated press and certain supporters towards Soccer suggests otherwise. I hope we get the World Cup for those people to enjoy. :thumbsu:

That tosser is overestimating the power that the AFL and NRL have. If FIFA were to award a World Cup to Australia, the government would push them aside; no country would give up that opportunity.

World champions Italy will support Australia's bid for the 2018 World Cup after the two countries joined forces in an agreement signed today.

The Socceroos are also likely to play a friendly match against Italy next year as part of the agreement, in what will be a re-match of the clash at the 2006 World Cup where the Socceroos were knocked out by a controversial late penalty.

Football Federation Australia chairman Frank Lowy and Italian Football Federation president Dr Giancarlo Abete signed the agreement today, just hours before the opening ceremony of the FIFA World Congress.

The deal includes the sharing of resources and expertise, including technical exchange in areas of coaching, refereeing and youth football.

Dr Abete said it was also in the agreement to support each other's bids for competition, which could provide Australia with a powerful ally in its 2018 bid.

"Australia, with this wonderful city of Sydney, has already hosted the Olympics in 2000," Dr Abete said.

"In the agreement it is stated clearly that the two countries will help each other and support in all possible ways if one of the two countries bid for a tournament or an international event."

Dr Abete acknowledged it may be easier to play a friendly between the sides in Europe but hoped to play in Australia.

He said before next year's Confederations Cup in June or in November were being explored as possible dates for a friendly.

Forza Italia. :p

Well, we're going to need corruption and bribery to win the World Cup and if there is one country that knows about corruption and bribery it is the Italians!!

Blatter: Australia Will 'Definitely' Host World Cup

FIFA president Sepp Blatter has proclaimed that Australia will definitely host the World Cup finals, but not before 2022…

Football Federation Australia, backed by Prime Minister Kevin Rudd, have been pushing for the 2018 finals as the nation is currently experiencing an unprecedented boom in the popularity of association football.

FFA’s hopes received a boost yesterday with the signing of a landmark agreement with the Italian Football Federation, which would see the Azzurri fully support Australia’s bid.

However, speaking at the FIFA World Congress in Sydney, Blatter quashed hopes of Australia 2018 by insisting the tournament is almost certain to return to Europe given the 2010 finals will be held in South Africa and the 2014 edition in Brazil.

England and the Netherlands are among the favourites to host the 2018 event, but Blatter insists 2022 is a realistic target for the World Cup to go Down Under.

"Definitely (the World Cup finals) will be (staged in Australia)," he said.

"But after the World Cup having been in South Africa and then in South America … 2018 will be very difficult after having been in the southern hemisphere.

"And to be far away, I think a (European) continental bid will be better. But in 2022 it is open."

2018 is gonna be in Europe, and then held in England, as I've been saying all along. :)

Yeah i agree with DB10, after two cups in a row in the southern hemisphere it WILL be in the northern hemisphere in 2018 and front runner would have to be England... 2022 though... Bring on Aus!!!

We should still go ahead with the bid though, putting in an impressive 2018 bid will have us ahead of the rest for 2022.

$60m kick on for Cup in 2018
Daniella Miletic, June 2, 2008

AUSTRALIA will push ahead with its ambitious $60 million bid to host the 2018 World Cup despite a sober assessment of its chances from the head of football's international governing body and claims that it is Europe's turn to host the finals.

Before Australia's victorious World Cup qualifying match against Iraq last night, Football Federation Australia chairman Frank Lowy dismissed claims the tournament was certain to return to the northern hemisphere after twice being held south of the equator.

"While I understand that there is a view emanating from Europe that it may well be the turn of Europe to be the hosts in 2018, the fact is football is a world game," he said. "Europe has unquestionably been the focus of football growth and development for much of the past 80 years, but the future of football is in the new world, that is, the developing and growing regions of the world such as Asia."

Finance Minister Lindsay Tanner said he was not discouraged and that FIFA president Sepp Blatter was being "just a little cute" when he suggested a European contender would nab the hosting rights.

Blatter last week indicated the 2018 World Cup would move back to the northern hemisphere after being held in South Africa in 2010 and Brazil in 2014.

Australia's decision to be a contender for the hosting rights would be guided by the FFA, not Blatter, Mr Tanner said. "He doesn't make the decision. He's an influential player, but he doesn't make the decision."

He said the event had moved beyond the traditional pattern of alternating between Europe and Latin America. "I think the comments from Sepp Blatter were just a little cute because the tradition with the World Cup historically has been that the World Cup alternates between Europe and Latin America," he told ABC Insiders.

In 1994, when the United States hosted the World Cup, that pattern was broken, he said. "In the most recent iteration we've had the European World Cup in Germany and the next one's in South Africa in the southern hemisphere. So that's effectively disrupting the pattern that would normally go to Latin America.

"What our bid is timed to reflect, of course, is that in 2018 it will go beyond Latin American options so, in effect, what that will do is have one delay for Europe, South Africa, and another delay, in this case, for Latin America."

The Federal Government has set aside $60 million for the bid.

Mr Lowy last night said that if the country was not successful in 2018, it did not rule out 2022.
