Socceroos World Cup Qualifiers Socceroos V Indonesia / China

Neat near post finish (keeper should have done better) and Japan go 2-0 up.

2 minutes to go + stoppage time so you'd think they have the 3 points wrapped up.

With that result, Japan have qualified for the WC. Hopefully this means an easier game when we face them in June
We still need Japan to beat Saudi on Tuesday. So hopefully they don't just completely give up on the qualification games now that they're in. I doubt they will considering that's a home game for Japan.

We're in a pretty good spot now. Beat China on Tuesday and we're in a VERY good spot. We're almost there. Just beat China and we go into the Japan game in Perth later this year knowing that a win against them gets us into the World Cup, assuming Japan beat Saudi in Saitama on Tuesday.

Side note. New Zealand will likely qualify for the World Cup on Monday night when they presumably win the OFC playoff. Maybe that will help motivate our boys to get the W in China.

Saudi's beat 10 man China 1-0, creating a gap between 2/3 and the rest.

Tuesday's games are crunch time for the auto qualification bid. We absolutely need a win, and for Japan to help us out with their game against Saudi Arabia (a draw would still be useful).

1 point and +7 GD. I wouldn't fancy our chances chasing a win in our final game in June in Saudi Arabia, so best we do our business early

We should still make it through the next group stage if we finish 3rd here so not too worried either way.

I'd just prefer not to have to keep playing extra games.

Teams from other groups in 3/4 place right now are UAE, Qatar, Iraq Oman.

Fourth round: Six third- and fourth-placed teams from the third round are divided into two groups of three teams each. The teams will play against each other once in a centralized venue. The winners of each group qualify for the World Cup, and the runners-up of each group advance to the fifth round.

You just know it's going to be in Qatar.....

Fifth round: The group runners-up in the fourth round will compete home-and-away over two legs to determine the Asian representation at the inter-confederation play-offs.

Avoiding the intercontinental playoff situations that we've faced in the past would be a good idea. Beat China on Tuesday and then Japan in Perth later this year and we're almost definitely in. Pretty much that simple. Don't leave the door open.

New Zealand are too strong for Oceania. But now they’re guaranteed a qualification any way for the World Cup, guess Asia isn’t attractive anymore
No reason to leave the OFC now. They've essentially got a guaranteed spot in the World Cup every four years and that's very valuable. Probably a good thing for us too because it means more A-League players will get World Cup experience and bring that back with them. Plus, it opens the door for us to face them in the World Cup and that would obviously be a huge event for both countries. There's really no negative to it.

Good for them. Monday night will be special for the Kiwis when they qualify at Eden Park.

Just as well we're in Asia, we don't have a goalscorer like NZ do in Chris Wood and we'd struggle to beat them and probably draw to one of the minnows if we were still in OFC
Think you've gone a bit far there. Bahrain & Indonesia would wipe the floor with every other Oceania team outside of NZ. Remember we won every game in the last phase of qualifying against weaker opposition.

So I had an actual look at OFC qualifying: it would be us vs NZ in the qualification final, loser runs the gauntlet vs a South American team in a playoff.
I'd rate our chances lower than in Asia.

Scottish workmate had a rant today (they lost to Greece 3-0 at home) about how easy NZ have it compared to his mob. No world cups since 1998 and they get a guaranteed place

Considering it's Oceanias first direct entry to the WC, I'd suggest until now it hasn't been an easy path.

Anyways they should be happy with Australia's success with the volume of Scots running around for us

Oceania has had a disgusting path.
Not Asian’s 5th side, not North American’s but South America. It’s horrific. Uruguay in 2005.
It’s a nightmare.

So they should qualify, they deserve it.
NZ now can have more professional and success with development given more qualifications. It’s a win for the growth of the sport

Scotland are just a dumpster in world football. Australia would still beat them.

New Caledonia v A South American team? That’s horrifically unfair. Why not North America- Panama, USA, Mexico, Cuba, El Salvador etc .

Europe directly qualifies 16 nations into the World Cup these days. Oceania has had 0.5 spots for decades and only now in 2026 does the OFC finally have guaranteed qualification of just 1 spot. In the past, having to fly over players from Europe to face teams like Uruguay in a two-leg playoff (which includes 14 plus hour flights there and back) sounds far more daunting than the short flights the Europeans nations have to undertake during these qualification campaigns.

Scotland should really just focus on trying to become a top 16 nation in Europe instead of complaining about other regional qualification methods.
